Your failing to take convenience into account. It is a definite economic factor.
A herbalist can make a vial for 200, sell at 250 and make 50 profit.
An alchemist can make a vial for anywhere between 130-150, depending on their supply, and the current market sale price is 150-175. What is the point of an alchemist bothering to fill vials when they make, at most, 25-45 gold per refill (not including cost of powerstones).

I can get refills for 175 and sell them for 250 and make even more profit. In fact, any herbalist could do that as well. In fact, -anyone- could do that. The fact that you could also do the same thing and make less profit doesn't mean anything. I fail to see what convenience has to do with anything. Does Bob kill the market on health? He's far more convenient.
No, he doesn't, because he (like Rowena) provides an inferior product for a greater price.
It is impossible for refills selling for 200 gold to reduce the price of a commodity whose market price is less than 200.

Jello I like your thinking.

Did all the alchemists die?
I've been trying to get refills for about 3 RL days, and no one replies, when before you'd get 4 tells in a second. I asked a friend in Seren, and he said "hell, I can't even get refills and I live here".
So I do like to bash, and tried to get them from Rowena. Two seconds after arriving...Rowena is massacred. So where are all you alchemists who need money! *weep* I'll keep trying.

We are finding it pointless to use our tradeskill for trade. Unless you want to pay us 200+ for refills, I don't see the point anymore.

Indeed. I don't normally do refills because the profit gain is so low, it isn't worth my time or effort. Galingale has been overharvested by herbalists so they can make more profit which ultimately kills any attempt to gain a profit with alchemy.
Devris2005-02-11 09:34:36
So...you aren't refilling.
And Rowena is being killed nonstop.
We might as well be at full war again if I have to go to Bob 24/7. This is ridculous.
(I will just point out I didn't want Rowena to be changed to a Seasone)
As of now, I have 2 health vials and those only came about when I ran to Rowena for the three seconds she was alive. I really think we should put together a worldwide herb clan, not like Oakstone, but just one that we can get massive planting sessions going. The reason most of the stuff gets overharvested is the younger folk don't know much about herbs, or the older crowd gets pissed when they can't find any of the herb they need. I need horehound and everytime I plan the Glom it is gone, and everytime I try for Balach they are herb guarded.
Alchemy will be profitable as I don't see Rowena staying alive long enough for the herbalists to make a profit off of her. So we do need you fellas and ladies.. I'm a prime example, I'm an herbalist, but I don't plan on crapping on your tradeskill.

I hate to break it to you but herbalists (at least a few) are bastards and overharvest intentionally because there is no system to stop them. This way, these persons can ensure that a specific herb becomes more and more rare (sparkleberry, horehound, etc.) so they can sell it for a higher price. Furthermore, any player involvement to regulate and maintain a steady growth of herbs gets torn in half by Auseklis who obviously is a herbalist and not an alchemist *peer*

I hope you thick-headed and short-sighted people realise you still have a monopoly on melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine, allheale and love elixirs?

Just remember, Rowena selling refills is not an OOC "feature" of Lusternia--she is merely filling her role as a rather bored undead wiccan who sees an opportunity to raise funds for whatever her own nefarious goals may be. Hmm, what will she be doing with that all that gold, one might wonder? No one ever said she would permanently sell potions nor that her prices are fixed. After all, what she considers "expensive" is a few hundred years out of date.
47175
Hehe, I just had a great idea! You are so right... Rowena is out of date and that means she probably shouldn't be using the new herb combination for health elixirs! She should be using the old way that takes lots of horehound. We Serens surely didn't share are recent recipe with her *muahahaha*
Unknown2005-02-11 11:16:27
Old recipe was 8 horehound rather then the 8 galingale. That would be a step in the right direction.
It doesn't change the fact that I don't refill, ever, except for the odd friend, or person I take pity on.
Why on earth would I waste 5 minutes, and refill 10 health and make 10-20 gold off each? Then realize I am now low on vital cureative herbs, and have to go out and purchase everything bulk. Thanks but no thanks, I'll stay on Astral and use my alchemy sipping bonus from the philosopher's stone.
All the other alchemists are beginning to realize it.

Isn't it funny that the most effective elixir ban so far in Lusternian is going to come from the fact that Alchemists just don't want to waste their time?

Our own novices complain all the time about not being able to get refills. So few people even choose the tradeskill.

I love when alchemists in Serenwilde refill for someone only to shut them up because they are asking constantly on CT... maybe if I stop killing Rowena, I can send them to her *ponder*

Alchemy was pretty pointless before Rowena, it has just kinda made me wonder why I bother at all.

Oh goodie, we have a monopoly on what, 15% of our potions? We should have a monoploy on the production of -all- our potions. That's kinda the point of a tradeskill.

I've never torn in half any sensible attempt to regulate herbs. That is because there has never been any *sensible* attempt.
As for the rest of you, Rowena is not refilling for 200 for health. She is refilling for 200 plus herbs, which is a total of probably 300-350 (I'm not really up-to-date with herb selling prices though). So you should be making a profit of whatever you charge minus herbs. To compete with Rowena you could easily charge more than Rowena would with herbs thrown in.
Lastly, have any of you tried to convince her to up her prices if you're unhappy with them?

There ya go!
Random person, "Wow! You're prices are cheaper than anyone else charges in the whole world!"
Rowena, "They are?"
Random person, "Yup."
*someone comes for a refill*
Another random person, "Here's my herbs and 200 gold, I'd like a health refill please."
Rowena "200 gold? Bah!! Do you think my time and effort comes that cheaply? Its 400 gold!"
Laysus2005-02-11 14:36:14
Just to clear something up:
I recently set up a spreadsheet with average herb prices (taken from ads and by asking a few herbalists), and then using the number of each herb per vial, and the price I charge for each of the vials, and I get between 70% and 90% profit, depending on whether I charge bulk rate or not. Health is at the low end of this, with between 50% and 75% profit. Although, this doesn't take into account sugaring (which I trade for mercury or sell at 110gp per), or the cost of powerstones.
So yeah, quit whining about alchemists not making profits, and just work harder
And before anyone points out that my profit would be based on number of customers, I do get a lot of them.
