Does anyone have a rough idea of when the next zMUD release will be made public (probably 8.0)?
zMUD 7.05 was released on 4th April 2004, which has many bugs still in it and is nearing an entire year ago... Zuggsoft seem to be a bit idle.
But, I suppose this long wait could lead to a very good zMUD to come!

I believe Zuggsoft has 'shelved' zMUD. A pity, really. It rocks.
Unknown2005-02-06 08:46:29
That's definitely a pity.
On Zuggsoft's website, though, it has the "Icon Bidding" thing for the next zMUD, so I just assumed that they would be releasing one in the not-too-distant future.

If a product does not make money, new versions do not get released.
Unknown2005-02-07 03:16:00
But isn't zMUD what Zuggsoft is most well-known for, and the most popular MUD client? They sell 1000s of zMUDs, all at $US30.
Maybe they screwed up with that "free upgades for life" thing, and now so many people have zMUD that less people actually need to buy it.
To fix this, they just could create a new MUD client by a different name, just building on from the original zMUD -- or something...

They don't sell thousands anymore. There aren't that many new customers, and most of those steal it.

Exactly... So they could try what I mentioned.

Does Sun make money off of new versions of Java?
Unknown2005-02-08 04:18:34
Sun made $2.843 billion last quarter. They faced near irrelevance in 1994. The swing is largly due to java.
Even a few thousand zMud licenses isn't enough to make it an instant slam dunk. 2,000 licenses is enough to support one guy for one year. How long has zMud been out now?

I get the impression that Zugg is mainly playing with the zmapper and zapp thingies.

How do they make money off of Java?
Drago2005-02-09 07:14:45
Advertisement and selling their weirdo sun systems.. those things with the dummy monitors and the single hard-drives.
Can't remember what they're called.

Daganev2005-02-09 07:20:12
No, I'm a bit confused. I'll have to look at thier site again, but everytime I go there I download free Java stuf. Systems and advertising is not making money off of java. .. And what advertising are you speaking of?
Aha! after looking at the website I see they sell classes and books. Zmud should sell Zmud classes and books.

zMUD
Until eMobius is finished, zMUD remains our flagship product and it will certainly not be neglected completely. In fact, zMUD has much to gain from the work being done on zApp. zMUD is a great example of "user customizable software". But zMUD was not written using a generic framework like zApp provides. While converting zMUD to a zApp application is probably too big of a project to consider at this point, much of the zApp technology can be used in zMUD. In particular, features like as-you-type spellchecking and an improved scripting engine are good possibilities. So zMUD is still considered an active project, and while you might not see a new version during 2005, it is still a project that I plan to continue to improve.

Good news: Zuggsoft isn't abandoning zMUD entirely.
Bad news: We may have to wait until sometime in 2006 for the next zMUD.

Why do you think so many of us are using or looking at using MUSHclient?
Unknown2005-03-13 06:01:14
Because it starts with the letter 'M'.

I knew there was a reason I liked Mushclient better...

Ugg, as usefull as Auto spellchecking will be for me, I hate the idea that Zmud will become slower.
