Why not?

Back to Common Grounds.

Not so, again. I don't think you were here for the Star of Celest quest? That was almost violence free.

Okay, let me shed a bit of light.

The net thing was newly made for this, so far as I can tell. I spent a few RL days visiting weavers asking about this (basically just stalling to give the admin time to develop it).

Why does Serenwilde care? I don't know; I never assumed they did. But Gwylifar cares. I never represented it as anything that the commune had a stance about -- quite the contrary, I went out of my way to avoid that. But I did leave room for individuals to get involved if they cared.

Why does Gwylifar care? He's not even sure, really. He only made the initial inquiry of Abeytu on a whim, just passing the time. That there was a poison involved was not the reason; Gwylifar doesn't need more poisons, he needs customers. And anatine doesn't look likely to be a poison in much demand; if it can sell at all it'll probably be 50-100 coins a vial, and one lasts a couple of years, so there's just no money in this.

It was just one of those things. He asked, he was surprised to get an answer, and has just been carried along. And along the way, he's found himself sympathetic to the poor adders for one reason: they are harmless and helpless critters whose fate got entangled in political matters that really had nothing to do with them. He wanted to see them safe because he didn't think anyone else cared enough about them to tend to them. (It doesn't hurt, by the way, that he's just become a father at the exact same time as this was happening, and his paternal instincts are foremost in his mind, spirit, and body chemistry right now.)

Why should anyone else care? I struggled long over that as I wrote long letters to Rhysus and Daevos, and ultimately all I could come up with is, this isn't going to help you, but it isn't going to harm you either. So please just do this tiny tiny thing out of kindness.

The fact that this whole event is not just another event about getting power for your nexus, or strategic advantages, or economic opportunities, or anything, is what endears it to me. It's about nothing more than just some harmless little snakes. And that means it's about nothing but roleplaying, period.

Even deciding your character doesn't care is itself an opportunity for roleplaying. And modulo the one "no one talks to anyone" thing I griped about earlier, I just love the way people have roleplayed about this. It's also dovetailed into the academic pursuits Rhysus, Brona, and Niara are working on, or it could: another thing that's done for the sake of roleplaying, and making the world richer, and nothing else.

There's room for us to conflict over power, and room for us to tend to the harmless young, too. Savor it even if your character doesn't have a reason to care.
