What do people believe in? Why do you believe in it?

Interesting to know what the player makeup is and also why.

Damnit, Aebrin. We only get one vote. I can't vote Atheist and Science and Lusternia all at once. >_<

Just thought I'd push a story here.

My dad sent this to me on my 13th birthday (just last november, not too late for credit pressies tongue.gif ) when I complained about work in high school:

True story:

A professor in his lecture brought out a jar. He promptly fills the jar with golf balls. He then asks the class if the jar was full. The response was "yes". He got out a bucket of small pebbles and continues to fill up the jar. Again, he asks if the jar was full, and again the answer was "yes". Next he filled the jar up with sand, taking up the small spaces. This time there was laughter, but again the question was a definitive yes. Finally he got out a six-pack of beer and fills up the jar with beer.

He says to the class, "This jar represents your life. The golf balls are what is important in your life - your family, your ambitions. The pebbles are what although not as important, still plays a large part in your life, such as your car or your house. The sand is the little things - bills to pay, going to the movies. If you fill your life up first with all the little things, the important things will not be able to fit."

A student asks, "Then what is the beer?".

The professor smiles and answers, "I'm glad you asked that. The beer represents God. No matter how full you think your life is, there is always time for God."

We already have one of these polls and since you left the option off, as previously mentioned, I am Gnostic.
Aebrin2005-02-07 20:34:05
what's the dif between AGnostic and Gnostic?
Raan2005-02-07 20:34:59
That last poll was all messed up. It lumped Jehova's Witnesses and LDS together tongue.gif

Gnostic (as explained to me by another Gnostic Christian here in Lusty) is what they believe as the true doctorine taught by Christ, but also generally condemned as heresy by mainstream christianity.

Though personally, I find it one of the most universally accepting and peaceful faiths I have seen thus far.

Agnostics usually fit the stereotype of a doubting Thomas.

Gnosticism is a train of thought that can/could be found in the Big3 World Religions, the teachings of early Greek Schools of Enlightenment, and bears a strong resemblance to Deistic Buddhism. Gnosticism has many variants but the central theme is that salvation/enlightenment comes from within (i.e.: internally focused prayer/meditation) to control/improve the body and not without like the Big3 (i.e.: praying in a temple, praying to Jesus, or calling upon Mohammed).

I'm the only atheist so far? blink.gif

I lumped Mormen and JW's together because they were not rooted in the Cathlic or the Luthrin church...

They both also go door by door... and each send their newbie door people to the apartments I live in, which are home to ministers and pastors of my Baptist Church... always fun.

There are no such things as mormen, or mormons. Never have been. The church you are referring to is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Further, our missionaries are far from newbies. Lastly, there is no logic that would lump Jehova's Witnesses and the LDS together, if you actually new anything about them other than what the local pastor's have told you.
Shiri2005-02-08 14:01:53
...okay, when a mormon actually calls herself a mormon, there are mormons. You might not like to call yourself one, but there's something obviously going on if these people SAY they're mormons. (All five of them.)
Raan2005-02-08 14:07:38
Like I said earlier Shiri. The man these people sustain as a Prophet of God, has said otherwise... ask them about it sometime? Mormon is a slang term created in the early days of the LDS church by the very people who put the extermination order in place.

And lastly, I believe, that the LDS prophet has a little more say on what, or who we are than your friends who don't seem to be paying attention to him.
Shiri2005-02-08 14:10:15
I'm thinking there's a similar sort of division going on here as between, say, Catholicism and Methodism (If I have my names right.) I'm not quite sure why to believe all 5 of them are wrong and you're right, so I'm going to assume that as with most religions there are differing views even within the same sect.
Raan2005-02-08 14:20:26
Like I said, Shiri, ask them.

There are no differing views. We have one leader, one prophet. You are proving yourself naive when it comes to the LDS religion by saying that. If you want to make statements like that, why not find out how the LDS church is structured first?
Shiri2005-02-08 14:23:55
...er, I'd be careful of accusing people of naievete. dry.gif But yes, I'm not too knowledgeable about mormon religion in particular. I only know what people have TOLD me. However, for these 5 people to all tell me the same thing, and you to tell me they're wrong, they CAN'T call their own religion something you say it isn't, but you can? Ehh. That's not just a structure issue.
