Grargh. Okay, so yesterday, when my mum went shopping, she offered to trade in some of my old games, and asked if I have any I wanted. I put Silent Hill 3 + 4 on the "sure, good idea" list. She comes back, having sold them all, and actually gotten a pretty good deal, BOTH games + £14 for me. I would rather just have had one and then more money for credits for trans herbs and friends, but fair enough.

Only.

They don't work.

My PS2, like, died.

...okay, I'm finished now.

Which is why the following reasons:

1) Get cash and buy new games (or test it out at the shop)
2) Do it yourself.
Aebrin2005-02-07 22:14:02
But I sympothize your pain.
Shiri2005-02-07 22:17:09
No, the games are fine. The PS2 is dead. (I tried some of my old games that worked before. They don't now. I get this disc read error horsehooves.)
Maedhros2005-02-07 23:00:06
I got the same error, but that was with my scratched up FF7 Disc One. Now I can't start new games.

Other games work fine for my PS2.
Terentia2005-02-07 23:15:37
I feel your pain.

Unfortunately, this is something all PS2s do. The laser that reads the disc gets worse and worse until it eventually dies. Sony will replace the laser for $100. Or you could just buy a brand spakin' new PS2 instead of mailing yours off for a few weeks.

On the bright side, the situation can be taken care of, if only temporarily. There are various tutorials (which I will see if I can find for you) on the internet about how to disassemble your PS2 and adjust the setting on the laser that reads the discs so that it gets closer to the disc and is able to actually read it despite being weak.

However, opening your PS2 voids the warranty (so Sony will not fix it for $100) and there is always the chance you will screw up and not even fix it yourself. But it does work and it is worth the risk if you think you might know what you're doing (or you have a parent who can figure it out). Even if some of your old games work right now, they eventually won't as the laser continues to run down.

A new PS2 is the only real longterm solution. (But then that laser will just die eventually too).

Don't you love Sony?

Moral of the story: Lusternia is far superior to any PS2 game.
Shiri2005-02-07 23:16:07
Damn. But my whole thing packed in. I just tested and it won't even play my bro's LOTR DVD now. It must've just died a while ago and I didn't notice. Sad. *flogs off SH3+4 and buys credits since he can't afford a new PS2* (That was responding to Maedhros.)

Aww, damn Terentia, you mean that? Screwy. I just don't HAVE that much money. That's the problem with volunteer work. No damn pay. tongue.gif Mrhhhhh. Guess I'll just...um...borrow a friend's for a few weeks or something. whistling.gif
Terentia2005-02-07 23:21:57
Yeah. Seriously. It happened to me too. Christmas of 2003 my PS2 died and I was able to keep it alive by adjusting the laser every other month until earlier this year (when I got one of the new pretty slim ones! But look out; they're easy to step on).

I just realized Sony has to fix it for free if the warranty is still on it, but I'm assuming that's not the case.

In any event, here's one of those tutorials if you want to try.

You can find more/better ones with pictures too. They're out there, I'm just lazy. Google is your friend.
Shiri2005-02-07 23:25:33
...thanks a tonne. happy.gif I mean that. I'll get my mum to try and fix it, if anything involves manual coordination and someone sets me on it it will more than likely catch fire. And I don't know if we GOT a warranty. dry.gif But anyway, yeah. Thanks! biggrin.gif
Maedhros2005-02-07 23:27:19
My PS2 broke too. But that was cause it fell off the shelf biggrin.gif.

Luckily, it was one week before my birthday, so I got a new one!

But no birthday present. mad.gif angry.gif
Shiri2005-02-07 23:34:20
Aww, man. That's gotta suck. sad.gif *comfort* I guess I'll..um...try and get this PS2 fixed tomorrow (my parents went to bad DESPITE me asking them not to for a moment, damnable rents!), and if that doesn't work, uh, guess I'll sell the thing and get more credits. happy.gif
Shiri2005-02-10 22:59:53
BURNNNN IT ALLL.

...yeah, so my sound card or SOMETHING crashed on my downstairs PC so I can't even watch anime in sound until my rents get back. In like 5 days. sad.gif Curses!
Nementh2005-02-11 01:10:01
Microsoft will fix a broken Xbox for free...
Unknown2005-02-11 01:42:37
I played Call of Duty on my X-box today. Not a bad game for a shooter.
Nementh2005-02-11 02:58:08
*Loves Halo 1-2 and SW Battlefront*

I liek Battlefront more on Live, because my log on name doesn't inspire the entire damn game population to either leave, or gang up on me...

Not my fault I aim for the head...

Battlefront... I normally have the best kills to death ratio, and normally the most kills... However they don't run from those romes because just having a kill count doesn't mean you win, just helps.

(Best kill score: 158-23 Deaths. Rebel Solider. Hoth.)

Yeah I think my PS2 is slowly headed in that direction. It happened with my Playstation too, because if you move it around too much, knock or bump it, or anything like that, the laser reader can get scratched or something.

My PS2 has a really hard time reading Playstation one games. A lot of the times it won't recognize the disc, so I have to restart and switch the power on and off for a few minutes to get it to work :/, which got annoying when I was trying to breed Chocobos in FF7 ^^;.

EDIT: Also, I was just reminded. This doesn't exactly relate to PS2, but kind of. I bought the Record of Lodoss War Perfect Collection DVD box set (the one with the original and then chronicles of the heroic knight) and...funny enough, it only works on one dvd player in my house. I tried it in two other ones (we have tons of DVD players, heh), and my computer, but it only works in my parents bedroom, which kind of sucks. I'm guessing it has to do with the country..code, or whatever it's called.
Shiri2005-02-11 03:13:42
...sucky.

Mine USED to have no problems with PS1ers. And my PS1 never faltered, and when I sold it on to get a PS2, the guy is still using it now and it's working fine. But I think I'm gonna have to get a new one, since it'll be near enough cheaper than fixing it. And my mum refuses to fix it using those tutorials, and anything even REMOTELY requiring dexterity generally leaves things melted and stuff...=/

Heh. Shiri, if it doesn't work, get the orginal packing, load it up in a box, and take it back to some poor unexpecting shop and trade it in. Had the same thing happen to me, but I got about 70$ off of it and it didn't even work. (Hahaha! Eat that Wal-Mart, you corporate warehouse of slovely service and unethical business practices) Just don't take it to a shop you like. Oh, and if you see one of those game trade in deals, go get some bargain bin 5$ games, and take like two or three of them in to get a new Silent Hill. Just try to get different games though, since three McFarlene Prophesy is a little suspicious (personal experience). Wait... Silent Hill 4 for Ps2? You sly little fox! Where did you get that?

Anyways- Disgaea=Nice, Star Ocean 3= Very nice, www.spiderwebsoftware.com=Priceless
Shiri2005-02-11 18:15:30
I don't know where I got SH4 for PS2, my mum got it. 0_o'

Oh, and I borrowed my friend's PS2 for 5 days while my rents are away in Wales, then they can fix it and all. happy.gif
