I don't think you understand the detremental affects a society will have if the government does not recognize or make different laws for marriages.
As the book "dream of a redchamber" (amazing book by the way) takes place mostly in the north, and the south is mostly ignored I couldn't say. But since the paragraph does not talk at all about the men getting a divorce before the man helps the boy find a wife, I would imagine it was a special Mentor/Student relationship.
