I've done both too and the trick is to do it before you lose your unlimited PORTALS.
It took me about four hours on the first one (Fink) and the second one was considerably easier as I was already familiar with Newton. I'd say thirty minutes or so. (Vix started out as an alt and then sort of grew into my main)

I think I may have finally found the fink one - I was certainly in the middle of a long string of related quests. However, I hit Lvl 21 and got booted out before I could finish.
Frustrating... *tantrum*
My tip would be to try doing everything at least 3 times (and do it faster each time). It took me 3 goes to get through the portals - because (I presume) I'd be too slow to find them the first couple of times.
Another trap, was waiting too long to read the text before typing "AGREE MIA" (or the like). So it took me a while before I'd actually get to the next stage.
These things are really obvious, once you know what is supposed to happen - but they may not be obvious as mistakes the first time you try it.

Well, thanks for all the help people.
I'm off to Newton... Hopefully I'll return Hero of the Finks and Savior of the Gnomes.

If you find yourself pushing the limit for level 21, you could always just lose a few influence battles. It's like dying without the dying.
Richter2005-02-15 23:44:23
Tempted to lose level 60 to go get those two quests...
Yrael2005-02-16 02:47:09
I'm only 19 levels off.. mebbe I should drop right down.. hmm.

If I may, the only thing that got me stuck for a long while was the fact that at one part during the fink quest, you -had- to use capitals (SAY YES, AGREE, etc.) exactly as it was written in order to continue on the quest. This got me stuck because all the other times that capitalized commands came up, you didn't need to use capitals. Anyways, got a little wordy... use capitals!
Summer2005-02-16 06:46:29
That's funny. I don't remember ever having to use capitals. If it's the part I'm thinking of, SAY YES TO ?
Amphitrite2005-02-16 10:33:49
Yeah, I dont think you needed to use capitals when i did it.
You just had to say it quickly enough.
As regards these two quests, it took me one character all the way up to level 20 and an alt to work them both out.
The fink quest seemed harder although I got through it ok and it was only at the final hurdle that I got stuck.
But yeah, they are definitely there and most definitely possible for those that try!

Nope, it wasn't a SAY YES TO on, it was an AGREE , when someone asks you to do something for them. And it did require capitals, since every time I didn't use capitals, I just got spit on rather than starting the quest.

i was stupid as a novice and never did any newton honour quests
Soll2005-02-25 17:29:50
I didn't even know they existed as a novice.
Really annoying when I found out they did, with 11 days playing time, and level 47.

Heh, by the time I figured out how to do the honors quests, my level was too high to go back to Newton. I recently created an alt so I could do them...and now I've forgotten how again.
super frustrating, I can tell you that much.

My brother and I worked on figuring out the Newton quests together. Once we finally found the start of the gnome one, we were pretty well off. From a clueless-newbie perspective, the fink quest was more difficult since it required doing the same things multiple times to achieve the desired reaction. Another fink quest problem was a misleading comment that led to search/acquisition of something that could indeed be used there but wasn't advancing the quest, and the time spent getting that led to the decay of something required. Probably only misled me, though ... because I was an idiot and didn't try using what I already possessed but blithely assumed I needed the other thing. So the fink quest took about 2 hours, I believe. Thankfully, the doom potion thing stuck around for a full hour and a half.
Speaking of difficulty in understanding the need to do something enough times ... it took me personally (my brother wasn't involved in that part, but when I finally put the problem and my frustration to him, I think he solved it in a few minutes ) over 5 hours trying to figure out how to get the glassblade reeds. Yes, you read that correctly. No, it wasn't a typo. 5 hours. The bleeding damage seemed excessive, so I wasn't as persistent as needed because I was afraid I'd bleed to death.
I do wish that once you opened either of the portals to Lolliprin, it would somehow remember. Once you know what to do, you can get back and forth before the portal closes from the Newton side, but when you're trying to figure out what to do next, think you might've found it, and then the portal closed so you have to backtrack to open it again ... it's frustrating. Especially when other newbies are around, because even if they have no interest in the quests they'll still be killing the gnomes/finks off so you can't get the chains/widgets.

The portals close again after you open them because they break down. Not really anything to do with repop except that's when they break.

I figured them out on my first newbie excursion into Lusternia, back before beta was over. It took some time and I had some help from people I teamed up with in the area but we figured em out before our novice period ended. Only thing I'll say is the quest ARE challenging mostly because they don't begin with NPC's, instead they begin with items, which kind of dont give you much hint as to what item you need or where the hell its supposed to go. All I can say is once you got the ball rolling it's pretty simple from then on, maybe a few hang ups but if you know the area well you'll probably guess the answer in short time.
Unknown2005-03-31 01:55:20
Ahh.. I remember the newbie quests, fun, also a little aggrivating in places, but eventually I managed to put the pieces together myself. (Perhaps that means the quest was too easy then)
So yes, I know that back then they were simple enough so long as you went through the area and connected the dots as it were, but from what I've heard, the quests have changed. At least the gnomes quest has, as a new player messaged me at some point asking about part of the quest, and it wasn't involved with anything that I did back when I completed it.
Don't know about the fink quest myself though, never even tried it.
Maybe it's harder, maybe it's easier, but I'm sure it can still be done if you take the time and consider all the pieces. Memorizing where everything is, or mapping it out, is helpful as well for those parts that are time-sensitive.

I am currently trying to do the gnomes quest it, I think I have it figured out its trying to move my lazy faeling ass to do all that walking and portalling, the worst thing is is trying to get all the widgets/chains and get to the portal, I use to think there was a bug but you have to go straight to the portals not doing anything else, i.e selling corpses or anything like that. Anyway hopefully in a couple of Lusternia days I will be known as the saviour of the gnomes, hopefully. I'm sure I have it worked out. Now where did I leave that book....
Archthron2005-04-04 22:28:43
I must be the worst at these of everyone. I figured out the first step of the gnome quest and nothing else, and couldn't find the start of the fink quest at all. Inept questor, that's me.
Summer2005-04-05 03:19:40
You just have to greet every mob that has a name (and a couple that don't) multiple times to see what they want. Start of fink quest is the same as start of gnome quest. Just different items and different guy you hand them to.
