Simple. Limit the number of people who can be Security members to Four, and give Security members the ability to Rescue.

Your guild structure should be such that becoming a protector feels special in and of itself.
Atleast thats one of the reasons I saw why its nice that they have no hard coded abilities.

I think Protectors should be able to rescue as well. It makes their roles more effective on the few times they would actually need to use the skill. It can be easily moderated by the guild for people abusing it, and yes I can see all sorts of scenarios for abuse with it. Like I said though if it is being abused then the guild can simply lay the smack down on them and remove them from the position of Protector.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. People would abuse that bigtime, and people would be promoted just for that purpose. I do agree that the Rescue ability is under used because it's simply hard for champions to be there at the exact moment you need a rescue.
How to fix rescue to be useful:: If the other Guild champs in your city/commune AGREE to have universal rescues, have each champion be able to rescue any member of the city, instead of only guildmates.

Also a good idea, but I would say limit to no more than three.

I feel that rescue is too powerful an ability to hand to any but one person from each guild, who can be held accountable.

I rescued Loketer from Stangmar today, when Stangmar was going to kill him. Was fun, though while doing it, I entirely expected to rescue into a statue, with like 4 people, and stonewalls and a monolith, but I went anyway. Luckily, it was Stangmar alone and just some stonewalls.
I remember when Gregori was lusted to someone, and he was so messed up with afflictions, he like couldn't think to reject, and I ended up rescuing him like 4-5 times in a row, as he got lusted out each time, by a couple of Nihilists.
The problem moreso lies in people not calling for help, so I am unaware that they are even being attacked untill they just up and die on deathsense, it's like damn, why couldn't you just say help on GT or something. It's ok to even call for help if you are dying to a mobile while bashing. If you are dying, or fear dying, or feel even slightly threatened just GT HELP, I'll rescue you, or your own Guild Champion would/should.

Well, you can thank me for keeping you alive through the 4-6 times you were lusted over and over. Don't think you ever did.

I believe that there should be a fixed number of Protector/Security positions. Say...4 in Security and 2-3 Protectors. No more than that.
So, every Protector and Security member of a guild should have a nice magical guild artifact that gives them the rescue ability? Why even have a Champion? I'm against this idea. Hope I don't sound a bit close minded. The points have already been made by the others in this thread.
I've assisted members of my guild/commune by teleporting myself to them or following someone who could quickly flow to the trouble spot. Teleport/Summon should be sufficient for Protectors or Security members. I don't use rescue often, but the moment someone says help on gt/ct I'll respond. Hell, even if a person is dying to a denizen rather than another adventurer, I'll rescue them. Rescue is a gift. Not a trivial thing to be used by 5-10 members in any guild

We think alike.

I was a protector once, before I realized that a Faeling engaging in any kind of combat is like a moth flying through the flame. I did love the pretty title though.
Since I was looking for ways to help, I gave it a few months. I patrolled the Ethereal, listened for emergencies, and waited for the chance when protectors would be needed. Unfortunately, I soon realized that being a protector was no different than being an ordinary member of the commune... in any conflict everyone else was able to help just as much as I could, if not more. There are no special duties that anyone else of the guild wouldn't leap to do, and no real reason for their existence.
I realize I'm not the best example, but are there any current protectors out there that feel they serve a vital role to their guild?

Or perhaps allow guilds to set up a hierarchy of Rescuers? Champion, then the various Security/Protectors?
That way, there's only one person who can at any given point (per guild) but so long as there's one such person around, the guild is protected.
Make it so the list can be changed by the Champion (and possibly the GM?). Maybe the list can only be changed once a year, so as to avoid it being passed off too often, thus avoiding much of the abuseable use?

Just make it so if the Champion isn't online, the mightier person in the protectors online can go and rescue if he wants. It would be much more difficult to abuse it. Make mightiest "the person with more lessons put on guild skills" or "the person with highest combat ranking" or "the highest level person" or whatever.
I would consider a number like 1 protector for each 15 guildmembers active more than enough (maybe even 1 for every 10 if you don't count novices as guildmembers). With active, I mean people how have logged on during the past rl month.
