What if there was skill in Influencing that let you speak to someone and for the cost of some ego gain 5 seconds of grace.
They must respond back in the 5 seconds you have grace or lose some ego and be thrown off eq.
If your ego drops to 0 you are given grace long enough to cover a disconnect.
Each banter might cost 200 ego. Failing to respond might cost 400 ego.
As a very high level skill, you can respond with "enough talk!" to end the banter. This would also make you immune to banter for 5 minutes, strip all relevant banter given graces and throw off you opponent's eq. This could cost 1800 ego. There would be a chance of failure, with the banter then continuing. The failed attempt to break banter would count as your response, and you would get your 5 seconds of grace, etc.
To prevent abuse, while graced during banter, you could not use skills or abilities. No deffing up, no curing, no banter/teleport nexus combos. If they fail to respond, you can then take advantage of them being off eq to try and escape or press the advantage and attack.

If this is meant to force people to pause long enough for Bond-Blofeld-like exchanges of pithiness, I'm all for it. However, how in the name of the stars could this work in a team fight?

Well the key is you must BANTER TO someone. You can only be in one banter at time. It is one on one. The grace is intended to prevent people hitting you while you banter. Though perhaps anyone present could try to break the banter with "Enough talk!" That would knock both influencers off eq.
Edit: Group against group could get a bit confusing.
