ANNOUNCE NEWS #205
Date: 2/17/2005 at 8:24
From: Estarra, the Eternal
To : Everyone
Subj: Karma Changes
-Gaining karma has been slightly adjusted again. Some karma gained will
only be a fraction of a percent. IF YOU RECEIVE THE MESSAGE YOU GAIN
KARMA BUT DON'T SEE IT RISE, THAT IS NOT A BUG -- YOU ARE RECEIVING A
FRACTION OF A PERCENT.
-Karmic blessings now have an upkeep of 5 karma for every online hour.
This means it may be more difficult to maintain more than one or two
blessings at a time.
-There is no longer any monthly karma gain.
-Karma is gained by shrine offerings. (This is a small amount of karma,
but it could add up if you offer a lot.)
-Karma is gained if you kill an enemy of your city or commune on your
city or commune's territory. This is a gain of 15% for Champions, 10%
for protectors and 5% for everyone else. SPECIAL FOR CELESTINE AND
NIHILISTS: Members of Celestines will gain this karmic reward for
killing enemies of the Holy Supernals on Celestia. Likewise, Nihilists
will gain this karmic reward for killing enemies of the Demon Lords on
Nil.
-Selling rats or weevils gains a small amount of karma.
One more update (not related to karma) is that the cost to distort
controlled villages has been reduced to 200 power. Again, this is only
available to Guild Security's discretionary power as set by the Power
Minister.

Well, thanks for ruining a good thing. I'm not going to rant about this, but it seems now that you have to quest even more to maintain your blessings. Eh... no. I dislike this change, because it defeats the purpose of getting a blessing in the first place. Now you have to waste some of your blessing time to gain more karma to keep it.

That's because they're AWESOME good. That's a GREAT fix.
Faethan2005-02-17 17:48:31
What's the point of me getting +2 charisma if I have to spend all my time questing to keep up the blessing?
Niara2005-02-17 17:50:23
Uhm, then gather some more before you get your blessing and maybe hunt some too.

So it prevents people from stacking 3 to 4 blessings all at once on them? You can't expect to have something so good without having to pay something in return. And since it is 5 karma per hour, if you started out with 100% karma, that is still 10 straight hours of non-questing you have to do. How is that spending all of your time questing? It takes what, 5 minutes to get 5 karma? How is that going to hinder your enjoyment of the blessing? If it was 5 karma per blessing per hour, then I'd complain, but 5 per hour alone is just fine.
Unknown2005-02-17 17:55:17
Um, I think it is 5 karma per blessing per hour, since someone was just complaining that it adds up too fast when you have multiple blessings. Still, I like the upkeep cost. Definitely a good way to prevent "uber" people from walking around all beefed up with blessings and totally immune to curses.
Shiri2005-02-17 17:55:30
It IS 5 karma per blessing per hour. The idea being you're not meant to have more'n one, presumably.
EDIT: Actually, just listen to Zarquan.

Well, at least you can get Karma for selling weevils. Guess I'll have my share Though, the monthly Karma gain was great, I wish they hadn't removed it... in fact, I believe it would've been better if monthly Karma had been increased to two monthly.
The Karma upkeep, I think is a bit too tight. Perhaps 2-3 Karma would've been more flexible and still a preventive for people to amass blessings.
Something worthy of noticing is... that this changes that have been made to Karma are a clear sign, in my opinion, that the administration of Lusternia constantly tries to satisfy the playerbase. Meaning, that in most cases, they do take notice of our opinions. So, all Karma haters... I hope you feel at least a bit more happier with Karma.

I think it should be 5 for each blessing beyond the first.
EDIT: There is no point in weeviling for karma, 469 gold worth of weevils just got me less than 1% karma.

So we can only go around with ONE overpowered blessing for 25 days? =/

The point of the upkeep, as far as I can tell, is to prevent people from getting too many blessings, not preventing people from getting any at all. The current cost of having one blessing is 175 karma over 25 hours.
Shiri2005-02-17 18:04:17
That doesn't actually take that long to get...
Desdemona2005-02-17 18:04:48
Overpowered? Nah, to me blessings are just... a blessing. Powerful things, not overpowered. Also, I think that to some of us, we would probably just desire to get at least one of the available blessings... and live well. So yeah, why not live with at least one powerful blessing for 25 hours, if you don't get yourself into trouble?
Karma on the other hand, should be subtracted whenever someone kills another in a villanous fashion.

Rauros2005-02-17 18:05:51
I'm afraid to log on to Lusternia now, because I had gotten 2 blessings before this change, and now I have almost no karma and my two blessings are near being blown to the wind... all that time questing gone. How is that fair?
Unknown2005-02-17 18:13:40
I logged in, read announce and lost one of my blessings (because I had no karma) right after. It was like 3 minutes after I logged in. So I went to get some karma to at least keep my second blessing. No way, it was gone in like 3 minutes...
Unknown2005-02-17 18:14:10
In another thread Estarra said if you messaged Her in the game, She'd remove one of your blessings for you. Yeah, you'd lose one, but that's better than to lose both cause you didn't keep the upkeep, yeah?

You get karma for selling weevils? Does it work the same way with rats? I tried it but didn't get karma, but it may have been because I only sold a few rats.
In any case, I like most of the changes. I'm not -particularly- fond of the blessing upkeep, at least if you have one blessing. I see how it's good to prevent people from stacking all of the blessings, but seeing as the only reason I even have a blessing is because trying to kill Marilynth got me enough karma, I probably just won't bother with blessings any more.
I like the karma if you kill an enemy in your own territory though, that's a great idea.
Unknown2005-02-17 18:18:27
Actually, i think if you don't have the Karma to upkeep the blessings then the time you will have the blessing will be reduced. You won't lose it immediatly, but you will lose it.
And i think the idea that the first blessing should be without upkeep is quite nice. I mean those who have nothing better to do than quest all the time, for them it's easy to get the upkeep, but if you for example quest a bit and then want to work on your manse, or rp with friends, or do -anything- besides questing and bashing.. you're screwed.
I don't think that once you have a blessing all your thoughts have to be focused on " now i need to do this and that quest to keep it, and i need to manage that within an hour or less".
@Shiri: Please enighten me, how do you make 5 Karma in 5 min. Considering that Marilyinth is still around so i can't even do the spectre quest.

Well, the blessings are something no one had before. I'm seeing it as a "privilege not a right" thing, so it's something you get as a bonus, not something to work for. So yeah, only get the blessing when you have enough karma and you want it to go bashing or something, right? That seems like the point after all, not just to have it and then go talk to friends for a day.
As for how to get extra karma, most quests do it.

Then how do you explain the 'work' for upkeep? A bonus too?
And basically what i tried to say is.. you get a blessing, you bash, get enough for upkeep everything is fine.. but after some time you get bored.. some friend just got on you haven't seen in a long time, and you want to speak with him.. or in general you want to do anything but bashing and questing since you've done that non stop for the past few hours.. but you know if you stop now you'll lose your blessing.. so what do you do?
