thats very interesting, what is this "in your territory" stuff about...? Purely statistically I definately prefer merians over viscanti...
On a side note are runes very usefull?
At this point I am not very tied to any sort of evil good or green... so I am trying to pick what would not hold me down...

Demesnes. Mages and druids can set up demesnes, by casting a spell on a room. A demesne can stretch over however many rooms you've the personal power to make. Think of them as druid groves that cover more than one room, though not as powerful. Or vibes that cover more than one room, but not as powerful. While in a demesne that suits them, they have more abilities to call on. When in their own demesne, they have more abilities to call on. They're just more powerful in demesne.
I keep thinking that way, Daganev. I sorta see demesnes as rooms full of permanent traps. Mages in particular are very snakey, though they lack in afflicty-ness. Mages and druids, while using afflictions to slow down opponents, inevitably kill with damage. Except Geomancers, who have a timed instant kill, but weaker demesne.

how are aslarans for mages? are there any balance attacks for mages... Just curious because I hear aslaran mages can be pretty mean...
Also a merian aquamancer looks pretty darn good at this point...
One more! How are mages for bashing?
thaks

They use eq, not balance, so no, not Aslaran. Mages aren't great for bashing, sadly. Except maybe in teams with reflections.

Mages do have a lot of ranged things, but they also take a long time to prepare their demesnes, and people can just avoid them if they want to. I think to be like a snake you need to jump somebody, without them being able to tell you're there. Another ranged attack to take into account is hexes, which can be pushed from one room away, and also automatically ambush people. But don't listen to me, the general opinion is that hexes are terrible.
Also, don't think of the cities/commune in terms of good/evil/forest, for one thing Celest's not all that good, for another Magnagora's not necessarily evil. Serenwilde is a forest, though.

Merian -only- if you're Aquamancer. Viscanti/Elfen are better for the Geomancers/Hartstone respectively, really.

Dracnari work well as aquamancers too. I know, I've been one for a good bit.
Shiri2005-02-17 23:46:54
Wasn't contesting that, I was just saying Merians don't make as good Hartstone/Geomancers as Elfen/Viscanti. And if you want long range, Shryke, and don't want to be held down by the demesne, there is no solution.
Shryke2005-02-18 00:00:32
well I guess that is the dilema... hexes are ranged... but are they really ¡that! bad?
Okay what is the best archetype for jumping`people? I dont personally like the idea of just hoping someone walks into my trap...

Jumping people... I'd have to say Celestines, Nihilists, Ur'guard. Going into the whys of it all is like begging for an argument, around here. People are touchy about class skills.
Ah, and the principal bad-side I hear about Hexes is that it's slow. Use EQ to make a hex, use EQ to throw the hex. You can make up to six hexes, which sit in the room with you, but they don't travel with you.

Id you're desperate for ranged combat, and don't want to be a mage, go something with tarot and use up 10 power every.. 20ish seconds to fling "any" (haha, any, I wish) tarot at any unshielded, outdoors person in the same area as you.
Other then mages or moon covens, that's as close as you're going to get.

I find a fully developed Aquamancer or Geomancer to be very Snake like. *shrug*
They have illusions, they can set traps, block people really good, all sorts of sneaky combat type activities.

Did you ever play a serpent class? I can see why you would think that way, but from my experience mages are nothing like snakes. Illusions are much more developed here, and aren't used the same way. I don't think they're as good at blocking people either.
Secretive? When I walk into demense effects I know immediately what's going on. Mages are about. Snakes could get around much more quickly, escape much more quickly, and kill someone much more quickly and effectively.
I don't think there is a class that is really effective at attacking from a distance (unless you count mass geomancers, that's cool) yet.

Actually, it can be done in the local area for 23/25 days of the month, so it's still possible during influencing. Say with Estelbar. Last time it worked fairly well there. *cough4ragesinarowwhoopscough*

Actually....
CODE
PHASE        SYMBOL     LENGTH (in Lusternian days)
 *New Moon       0       1
 *Waxing Crescent   ))      7
 *First Quarter    |)      1
 *Waxing Gibbous    D       7
 *Full Moon      O       1
 *Waning Gibbous    C       7
 *Last Quarter     (|      1
 *Waning Crescent   ((      7
So, the moon cycles on 32 hour periods.
Rage is worldwide once every 32 hours, local area 28 hours out of 32, and unusable for 4 hours a day.
Shiri2005-02-18 01:49:41
That doesn't add up, that makes 33. Admittedly I got my timer wrong (I always used to think it was a 24 day lunar month, 5 each way plus the four points) but isn't it only null on the new moon?
Unknown2005-02-18 04:21:26
I love being a serpent in Achaea, for the stealth and for the BOW! Even knights in Achaea get bows. Where's my nifty bow? Knights' only real weakness left, in my opinion, is that we have not a single good ranged attack (unless you've got an "auxiliary" skill such as Moon, maybe).
Shryke2005-02-18 13:32:14
so, how does this tarot ranged thing work..?
That would be nihilists, but I am sort of into ur'guard... what are good races for them, I have been thinkin about loboshigaru or taurians... I guess it´s sorta off topic, but its my thread so whatever...

Viscanti (Brood Viscanti) is probably about the best you'll get, but Aslaran, Igasho (I think, haven't seen many bar Zarquan) and a couple others can do well.
Don't know about local area tarot, but the trans tarot skill is world, which lets you chuck (most) tarot cards across the world for like 20 seconds. Which is rather pointless since the only one you'd WANT to throw, lust, doesn't work, and they can just...cure the rest. :/

Shryke2005-02-18 13:43:57
the problem is I don´t really like viscanti, they seem TOO good... I like a little uniqueness... Humm, so lobo´s aren´t considered a very good warrior class?
Shamarah2005-02-20 23:49:18
Dracnari, Loboshigarus, Viscantis (if Ur'Guard), Aslarans (if going for speed), and Igashos all can make good warriors.
By the way, Mages are not at all like snakes. Our demesne is loud and obvious, like Rakor said (there's a big colored line at the beginning of the room description, in most cases!) and we give slowing afflictions, not disabling afflictions. We don't have anorexia, asthma, sleep, or any of those other nice afflictions. And yes, unless you're a geomancer, you have to kill by damage. Which is really annoying when you're fighting tanky folks.

BZZZT! Wrong!
Local area, limited tarot that can be used, lasts about 30 seconds by my estimation, stopped by indoors and shielding.
