Another vote for Harry Potter!

And the Dark Tower series.

Also really liked Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.

This is gonna sound geeky.. probably.. But are any of you Harry Potter people addicted? And do you read fanfic?

Addicted to Harry Potter you mean? Why yes. Yes I am. Read Harry Potter fanficiton? Why yes. Yes I do. I am a Harry Potter fan of obnoxious proportions.

Oh. My. God.

Harry Potter fanfiction? All fanfiction is horrible, nothing but a string of implausible, poorly written filth in which the characters and settings of the story in question are twisted at the whim of the storyteller into a mess of inane events and idiotic situations. No doubt half of this 'Harry Potter Fanfiction' involves otherwise impossible matchings, with Hermione engaging in varying degrees of romance with every male (And perhaps female) character in the series, and that's just for starters.

Fanfiction makes me sick.

Choke.

*highfive Guido about the fanfiction thing*
Jalain2005-02-24 02:06:18
Not really.. There are good stories out there, and I like the stories that move away from the Canon of the series. And yes, there are alot of stories about different couples, which I tend to avoid.. Which can be done easily enough, since there are about... 150000 of them on ff.net.

So, BAH to you, Cranky Guido.
Veonira2005-02-24 02:07:14
I read fanfiction. Draco Dormiens is very good <3.

Jalain2005-02-24 03:51:58
I like too many things to list.. but I have a list at www.fanfiction.net/~kaotac of my fave stories.. though that doesn't include them all either..

Dune.
Jalain2005-02-24 07:20:22
Ooooh, yeah.. The Deverry Series! by Katherine Kerr
Shoshana2005-02-24 09:16:07
Yes, the majority of HP fanfiction in particular is worthy of that description, Guido, there is some very very good stuff if you know where to look (Better than JK Rowling's writing, that's for sure. I like her world but her writing style seems to be getting worse and worse...). Especially in some other fandoms that don't have the same population of 13 year-old fangirls.

Anyways, stepping away from the hijack: The Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb, although not the first two (Even though they were definitely worth reading to understand the third one properly). Lots of Orson Scott Card stuff, but Ender's Game in particular. A couple of Terry Pratchett books (The Wee Free Men most recently). That's about all I can think of at the moment...

Deverry Sage - Katherine Kerr , the only circumstance under which I will read a 10 book series in one sitting, I wish her publishers hadnt screwed her about for the last 2 books...ah well.

Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman

or anything ever written by William Gibson ever.

EDIT: Oh and anyone who like Robin Hobb read her Megan Lindholm stuff, ESPECIALLY Wizard of the Pigeons.
celahir2005-02-24 12:56:11
War, Irony, Paradoxes and The Wheel of Time.

At the moment I'm reading the left behind series which is great.

And... HARRY POTTER IR CRAP! Dont read it!

Those are the only two books I can read without being bored to death

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson.

Greatest Fantasy series (two previous trilogies and the first book of a new one on shelves now) ever written in my opinion.
Rauros2005-02-24 17:08:37
People actually read these days? blink.gif

But seriously, back on topic...

The Source of Magic, by Piers Anthony (or any Piers Anthony novel for that matter)
