The Mastersword

Back to Ideas.

I was reading the book Stormblade the other day and there's a bit in it that I think would be a great idea to put into Lusternia. Not exactly the same, obviously, but similar at least.

The idea behind it is that a weaponsmith, in his last days, creates his final work, his masterpiece - the finest sword he has ever made - and then retires. The book is great, I'd advise anyone to read it, or the Prologue at least, which deals with the creation of the sword.

So here's my idea: When a person trained in forging reaches Transcendence, he gains the ability to create a mastersword. this sword will be the most powerful he can make, and he can only ever make one. The sword will be personally designed by the smith, and named.

With, of course, a heavy price in coms, including gold, silver and gems, as this is one spectacular sword.

Here's a twist: the mastersword doesn't reset to the smith; it can be stolen, traded or whatnot, in which case it is up to the smith to regain their sword, opening up some interesting RP when a warrior must crusade to get his weapon back from his enemy.

Perhaps there could be some quest involved, maybe having to travel to some dee and godforsaken mine to collect your own ore, or having to defeat a Supernal or Demon Lord with the sword to awaken its power or somesuch.
Possibly an honours line for those who succesfully forge one: Being a master of the forge, (s)he has successfully forged the Mastersword #(Name)#

Like I say, one sword only per smith, and it should be difficult to make it too, but it should be a majorly powerful sword.

Of course, this could be a little unfair on those Knights who chose Bonecrucher, but hey, life's tough.

Can I be blunt?

This idea sucks.

But keep pumping them out!

(The opinions expressed here are the sole opinions of Richter Carthan, and are not reflective of the view of The Merchant's Guild, or the Aethercommunity of Deepnight)

P.S. I have a master weapon already... *wields the elemental scourge* Have a cartel make you a weapon, and rune it. Or read HELP CUSTOMIZATION. This game has no artifact weapons, because you can make your own. Putting a smith out of work for life would not be fun, ESPECIALLY if they're trans.

Unless you hand me my 300 credits back.

Nah, nevermind, still wouldn't.

Edit: Wait. It DOESN'T reset to you? This is a Terrible idea! Back in your cage!

No.

This makes two ideas of yours that I hate.

Three strikes, I ban you.

Woohoo! I've already made an enemy of a moderator!

Kudos to me!

EDIT- No, I didn't mean put the smith out of work for life. That's just what was in the book.
Richter2005-02-25 23:56:31
It's cool in books.

Although, if you've ever read The Crystal Shard, Bruenor makes the ultimate weapon of his life, Aegis-Fang... He still makes them, but can never top it. Maybe... refine your ideas, so they're feasible.

And it said "kidding", about ten lines down.

I know.

but I'm still going for idea no. 3. hehehe
Desdemona2005-02-26 00:00:52
Good idea! Maybe also the forgers could only forge such swords in the heat of a volcano. The sword, could have a ridicuously life-spank 10k years of life and have superb stats, also, the stats could depend on the amount of style of sword and foldings of the iron. I for one would like to get my hands on a Muramasa.
Unknown2005-02-26 00:03:14
Or having your sword blessed by a nexus and having special power from that.
Richter2005-02-26 00:03:25
If you want a mura... thingy, just message me, jeez. I'll see what I can do. tongue.gif

And I like the bit about the swords having life-spanks.
Desdemona2005-02-26 00:10:30
Now that would be a bit too fantastical, I think wink.gif. Nice, but too fantastical. You mean like, the power to throw rays at other people, or what? Or the power to command plant entanglements while blessed by a forest nexus?

Life-spank... Go ahead and make fun of it. tongue.gif

It could be good... until someone decided to call theirs the "SuperSword of Life-Spankage"

Richter2005-02-26 00:31:12
If he gets that, I'm re-naming my office Richter's Wicked Bad Bachelor Pad.

Because if we go that far, Lusternia has gone off the hizzle.
Daganev2005-02-26 01:36:03
People use two swords... how does this fit in? Is the sword going to be as good as two swords?

Why couldn't bonecrushers make a MasterMace?
Shiri2005-02-26 01:48:42
Masterweapon, whatever.
Desdemona2005-02-26 01:57:34
Bonecrushers don't matter. Swords are best for this kind of weapons. Or if you wish then go ahead and suggest some Legendary weapons for Bone crushers.
thakin2005-02-27 12:33:19
A sword with a 10000 year lifespan would make a nice family heirloom.

I can see the RP already. This sword, the SuperSword of Life-Spankage, was given to me by my father, which was given to him by his father, who stole it from the orginal forger but lets not get into that...

Let's just rip the Mastersword from Zelda and use that. Does +50% damage to Mages and summoned creatures (Angels/Demons/Fae), and at full health you can 'BOLT ' to fire an energy blast at them. Costs normal balance and does half the damage of a swing.

Two dwarves with Transed forging can make it into a tempered sword, doubling its damage.

If you give the tempered sword to a level 99 Faeling they can make it into a Golden Sword, once again doubling the damage.

Now, if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go play A Link to the Past.

That is what I wanted to avoid: A complete magical sword. One thing is a legendary sword that could be considered as the trademark of a forger, a sword famous for it's cutting capability considered as a complete masterwork, accompanied by an immense life-span. That is why I mentioned Muramasa. Something that can easily embody the concept of an actual Legendary weapon in rl.

The concept is more around revolving around Thakin suggested. A coveted sword, forged by a master forger. A sword famed for it's great combat power: damage/speed/accuracy more one aspect than the other.

Though, I must congratulate you for enjoying A Link to the Past. Taste every moment of that Masterword, because the Mastersword from home consoles onwards is nothing wink.gif.
Rhysus2005-02-27 22:54:38
This is a poor idea.
Desdemona2005-02-28 00:20:53
Is it?

What is so poor about the idea?
-A forger reaching trans being able of making one(or two, for their double slashings) legendary sword that would be better on average than masterweapons, other swords, with an incredible life-span?

-It could take a large amount of comms to make, the swords could excel on damage/to-hit/accuracy depending on the forger

-The sword acting as a trademark of the forger could be modified in detailed (a custom made weapon, so to speak).

It is a good idea.
