Thinking about buying one or the other which everone is cheaper can someone tell me what about the range each one might cost?

Depends. If you're a mage, wiccan, or druid, you'd be better off with greatrobes. Not sure on chainmail and how good it is so you'll have to check with your guild on that. And if you're a knight, stick with the armor.

Which usually last longer cause it seems like there about the same price? If one last longer the other ill just get that one im to broke to keep buying armour over and over.

You can repair greatrobes once it hits 25 months, but it takes off 1 point of charisma when worn. I don't believe you can repair armors or weapons in the same fashion to prolong their decay months.

As guardians can wear both, which is actually better?

It depends on your foe, I've found that my chainmail
cuts my damage income versus knights by around noticeable (10%-ish),
sometimes more, and less, depending on various factors

In my experience, chain mail is slightly better than great robes. Chainmail can be reforged with a slight cost in leather and cloth to get the stats up higher than great robes, which cannot be 'retailored'. Too, chainmail can be runed by a forger. I just got into the habit of keeping coal onhand so I can get my armor runed prior to big battles or major hunting sprees.
Great robes can be proofed - which have never worked, near as I can tell.
Oh, and the biggest cost to chainmail is the steel. You can recover the steel, so in the long run, I'm fairly sure chainmail is cheaper. While you can mend great robes, chainmail lasts a good long time before needing 'repaired' (reforged).
Last little thing - great robes tend to have a much wider split in defenses than chainmail, and I don't ever recall seeing great robes that favored bludgeon defense. With chainmail, the defenses tend not to have as much of a gap between them. Meaning, the defense tends to be closer to equal between cutting damage, and bludgeoning damage. Sometimes, cutting defense is favored, sometimes it's bludgeoning defense. Being as bonecrushers are generally accepted to be the more dangerous warrior types, this is yet another reason chainmail wins out over greatrobes by a small margin.
