Skills can include
Being able to switch places with your protégé if they are in danger.

NO. NEVER.
This would be decent for newbies, but wait till a year down the road when plenty of decently competent people would be able to switch with Daevos or something.

You could easily make this only work until the protege is say level 30-40ish.
They should be able to hold their own by then.
Remember, the point of mentoring is to help them out when they are young.

Just an idea. Like I said before. These things could only work for the protégé until they reach a certain level.

It'd have to be a timeframe rather than a level. Levels go up and down, time played doesn't. Eg:
Level ) Newbie is created, and 1 year later dies to level 20.(21 being Mentor/Protege skill limit) Newbie runs somewhere, and then switches with Mentor so they can avoid statues/totems.
Time ) Newbie is created, and 1 year later cannot take advantage of the Mentor/Protege skills because they're played X hours.
That'd solve atleast some methods of abusing Mentor/Protege privs. Time should be small, too. 10-15 hours, maybe. Enough to teach them the most dangerous areas of the Basin.

i like that

Give proteges a small lesson bonus when they learn from their mentor. If I was a newbie, I'd definately want to get a mentor to make the most of my lessons.

now that's a good idea.

No, no new Myrrh.
Ialie2005-07-25 00:26:59
Would only act as myrrh to a newbie. After you passed time/level/skill restraints it would not work anymore.
Shiri2005-07-25 00:48:39
Still myrrh. No myrrh. People shouldn't get either lesson restrictions or advantages like that.

Agreed.
An advantage becomes a restriction to the people who don't want to pay the price of the advantage. That is, giving lesson bonuses as an incentive to use the mentor system only creates a barrier between what you want and what you feel you need.
Unknown2005-07-25 02:36:07
Neither of those ideas is appealing to me.
And myrrh <-

eh? I don't think the actual problem that I see from that was addressed there.
The point of it would be to help out the young...
And it would be used to send "innocuous" newbies to areas where they could then switch out to a significantly more powerful mentor. Which would hurt newbies in the long run.
A mentor related summoning ability to a certain level would be defensive. A skill which would trade places would obviously be used offensively.
And besides, that somewhat undermines the importance of a guild champion (the only one with that ability, to my knowledge).
Galatae2005-07-29 17:23:49
The switching places with your mentor bit worries me. I mean, they're only going to be certain levels, right? It's not -that- difficult to gain experience back if you die when you're young... and besides, dying is a good IC experience. Teaches you to not be quite so... stupid, when it comes to randomly wandering around.
Other than that bit, and minus that myrrh-type idea, I like.
