Ridiculous - correct.
Rediculous - incorrect.
There is no 'better'. One is correct, the other isn't.

Can we argue colour and color now?
Desdemona2005-03-04 16:49:58
Will you then go ahead and argue about armour-armor?
Aussie & Brittish...

Yes.
Armour, valour, honour, colour, tumour, humour, Seymour (), clamour, glamour. THERE ARE U's IN ALL THESE WORDS.

You forgot about labor/labour. Keep instructing me in proper spelling.
Rumour/rumor, too!

Bah - at least any time an Aussie is down in a fight with an American, we can just ask them to say "philosopher" and everything is right with the world again. I mean, kids books don't need their names changed to come to Australia because we can't pronounce one simple word thats been in the English language and isn't particularly difficult to say.
I mean honestly, as if "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" sounds better or has any significance when compared to "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".

Philsopher = stuffy dorky nerdy kind of guy
Sorcerer = cool hip magic zapping kind of guy
What anyone who is over the age of 15 gets from Harry potter is beyond me.

How about they are interesting, easy to read and are a change from the generic rubbish or books that stretch on needlessly just to sell paper you get when you open some of todays more popular "adult" fantasy books - say anything by David & Leigh Eddings (take their first series, rename half the characters, give some minor plot changes and release) , Robert Jordan (TWoT should have been compressed - and you know he isn't talentless because his earlier work is simply amazing) or the like.
Shiri2005-03-04 18:49:18
I liked Harry Potter, but then I was 14-15 when I read it all, so I guess I have an excuse. And yeah, you'd think the Americans didn't actually know what a philosopher was, the way they had to change the title of that thing to make the kiddies understand.

Are there any fiction books published these days that are -hard- to read?
Asarnil2005-03-04 19:35:19
Umm, well the War of Light and Shadow series is a fairly hard read apparently, because even though I love it most of my friends can't get through it. The earlier books in Terry Goodkind's The Sword of Truth series (the latter ones suffer from Robert Jordan syndrome), and about half a dozen other series ive got in my library i can't remember the name of - thinking fiction is still around, you just have to dig harder for it.

OH please. Must everyone bash Harry Potter? If you don't like it, leave it be, some of us happen to be adults (..that's a scary thought) who love it. I'm anticipating the release of the next book in the series!
As for spelling, meh! I spell things without u's because that's just how we do it. I try to spell things like honour on Lusternia, because that's what is expected. But in school and in papers I leave out the u, unless I'd like to be seen as a weirdo.
I take pride in my spelling though. My grammar may not be perfect, and I don't generally like to write, but my spelling is superb. I always won spelling competitions in school.
