Since when does letting them out of the house translate to: let them go errant and be victim of car traffic, becoming in negative contact with stray dogs, being stolen?

You control your dogs, you are in charge of your dogs, you let them out under your supervision, take them out, etc. Dogs are completely manageable.

I have something called a dog chain in the back of my house.

I hook the dog chain on my dog's collar, I then open the door. My dog runs out of my house, sniffs for a little while, does his dirty work, and then rolls around in the grass, sniffs some more, and eventually comes back to the door where I let him in.

Nothing in there that says, "Strya dog, barking at cars as they run him over" or something similar to that.

P.S. Any animal will eat their own feces, dogs just sometimes do it in open sight.

QUOTE(daganev @ Mar 7 2005, 03:43 PM)
How is letting it feed from its mother considered starving it?
68015

It occasionally let it feed before taking it back. The calf was malnurished throughout the whole escapade. You seem to forget that.
Daganev2005-03-08 05:50:55
six there were 6 of them, I'm not sure which one your speaking of. I didn't read anything about it being malnurished.
Singollo2005-03-08 06:15:47
Perhaps its your lack of reading that led you to the misunderstanding that this was a tragic story that led to an inevitable death for the oryx, rather than a nifty, neat or otherwise cool one.

QUOTE
Although both animals were on the brink of starvation it was hard to predict which of the two might die first, as the odds were stacked against them both. The calf was utterly reliant on the lioness for protection against predators, but its captive state and association with a lioness deprived it of its sole food source – its mother’s milk.

QUOTE
In fact, it turned out that both Park Rangers and tour drivers had seen the calf returning on occasion to an adult oryx and suckling for a brief moment before being recaptured by the lioness

QUOTE
The baby oryx would follow the adults, and the lioness would give chase using all her predator tactics to recapture it.

Its just an example of of a lion (farcry from a housecat) wrecking something. Housecats are far more prone to making ecological imbalances.
Daganev2005-03-08 06:39:14
ahh, I didn't read that article. The articles I read were from the news papers, much less detail.

Dogs are much worse though. What I like about cats, is they are more likely to runaway so you don't have to worry about them as much. Unless you care about the animal, then it harder. But an animal that runs away and avoids me is one less animal trying to sniff my crotch.
Shoshana2005-03-08 09:10:11
Cats are only more likely to run away if you don't treat them right, and that's probably because dogs can't run away so easily. Our cats are very protective of the house and the immediate area around it... And whoever said that cats are bony has never petted a decently fed one. Cats are definitely softer than most dogs (Except for those sphinx ones, of course...).

And about cats giving wild animals diseases etc.: Ever heard of dingos?
Shiri2005-03-08 12:56:29
I'll agree about cats not being bony. But no, cats run away for any and every reason. Apart from a few exceptional dogs, they like to stay close to a nice indoor sheltery comfort thing. Cats are independant, they don't care about people, they care about a nice place to rest when they feel like it, so they go and do whatever the rest of the time.
Desdemona2005-03-08 16:08:51
Dogs and cats do run away at times. I'm pretty sure both animals have the capacity to navigate back home. Also, I think that a cat that "guards" an area is simply taking care of their territory. Cat's are very territorial as well, and unlike dogs they don't like to share their turf.

Also, unlike dogs, cats are to blame for severe ecological hazards upon introduction to a new area. Just shows you how troublesome cats are.
Shiri2005-03-08 17:50:18
Well, dingos lead to a lot of extinctions. They're dogs, not cats.

No, thats how troublesome HUMANS are.

When was the last time you saw a cat sniff your crotch?
Shiri2005-03-08 19:59:56
As opposed to just randomly claw your leg 'cause you smell like something they didn't like? :/
Daganev2005-03-08 20:28:49
thats never happened to me. never been attacked by a cat, been attacked by dogs many times.

Psh, of course human are the worst!

Just to quote Reverend Agent Smith:

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you humans are not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet."

"You are a plague, and we, are the cure."

I decided to quote the whole thing because it is a very good quote.

As for dingos, ironically the original dingo themselves are on the path to extinction thanks to interbreeding with dogs among other things. So, yes, dingos had the bad fame of further ruining the already screwy Australian ecosystem. Cat's are simply more notorious for doing things like this, I think it is due to their ability to work as individuals hunters and easily escape predators. Dogs on the other hand are very dependable to hunt on packs to function well as predators and thanks to their size, I think that other big predators could count them as part of the menu...

Of course, dogs have the reputation of hunting cats, so cat's are parts of a dog's food change if let. So, I was veeery surprised when Akraasiel mentioned a cat eating a pitbull. I was like... He is joking. I hope he wasn't reffering to the Amercan Pitbull cause those dogs are famous for their strength.

A good movie about the dog-human relation is "Amores Perros". I recommend seeing it.

Cats are winning. Quite a surprise for me... I'm used to knowing more dog-lovers than cat-lovers.

Lusternia is strange place.

Edit: Oooh, finally this thread and the TMNT thread were moved. Hurray for whomever did it!
