Theres no problem with muds that have mutiple languages and no common language. I've played quite a few of them with smaller player bases and they work fine.
However, in Lusternia it would not make sense.

I like Imperian's Language system, but that's just me.
Shiri2005-03-09 00:52:00
Yeah, that's been recommended a few times too. These "Language" threads get brought up occasionally, I should find them all and merge them.
Desdemona2005-03-09 03:21:05
Yes, go search for ALL threads that involve a Language idea and merge them. MINE included.
Shiri2005-03-09 12:21:41
Psh, no, not yours.

Why should young people be able to easily speak with everyone? I see no problem with novices not being able to chat with people from other cities. I don't know Spanish, and I don't feel like learning. I don't expect to able to magically talk to spanish speaking people. This is what we have diplomats and ambassadors for.

About a year ago in the design stage, I had an idea for a language system that made Roark choke so we decided not to do it.
I'd still like to do something but unfortunately it's rather low on our priority list.

NUH UH. Languages are fine as is. Whatever it was, Roark's gut instinct's fine.

Heh, he didn't choke because it was a bad idea. He choked on the coding aspect.
P.S. We will never get rid of common.
Shiri2005-03-09 18:52:30
Then I have no complaints whatsoever. Go ahead!

My dream... ruined.
How about instead of common permanently disappearing, how about as a delayed side-effect of the Portal of Fates everyone temporalily forgets it? We'd engage on the marvelous epic quest to try recover it.

Ambassadors being able to learn other languages! *rally ambassadors*
Typhus2005-03-10 19:02:50
IF there is common, why should any player ever use any other language except for Rp purposes... Unless you could _write_ in your racial language...
Desdemona2005-03-10 19:19:04
I have an idea...
Let us say someday in the distant future, a strange voice shouts a strange toungue twister followed by another shout in an unknown tongue. Suddenly, all of Lusternian listening, or EVERYONE, gets confused by the tongue twister/incantation, so they loose the ability to talk in common. Why? Because suddenly the spark of the common language inhabiting every being is stripped from everyone and fuses to embody ONE being named Voice. Now, for the next 15 years, Voice requires for folks to make some quests under it's name... before it even considers returning to the voices of the mortals.

You know you would have been more effective at selling it if you just said "It will mean you wont have to listen to Munsia or Lucy or celest equivalent!" instead Desmedona - now there has been a ruling on it and you lost so give it up already please?
Desdemona2005-03-10 19:38:12
Give up?
Nah, I can keep on dreaming... even when I know such thing would never be made real.
But yes, I know the ruling is official. Pity.
