A while back Richter was toying with the idea of purchasing an arena for Deepnight before Buho so cruelly crushed the idea. I liked the thought of gambling on fights there in Deepnight, outside the laws of the cities.
I've been thinking about it and the concept of holding fights is still a workable idea but I'm having trouble coming up with ways to motivate fighters to participate. The stakes are high since its out of the arena so what would it take to entice fighters to participate? Gold wouldn't work too well since the kind of fighters that could bring in people to bet on them would have the means to amass a fortune of gold on their own, i.e. astral bashing, credit selling etc.
I'm not sure that I've spoken very coherently but oh well, my question is what would it take to bring the fighters? I want to gamble

credits would do a lot actually and fighters used to fight in duels a lot in the early days... just now everybody lost their libido.
Anarias2005-03-16 05:29:22
How many credits per fight would be enough to make it worth people's while do you think?
Elryn2005-03-16 06:37:49
Incidentally, if you are going to be holding duels and such this would be a great time for the help files on Bookies to actually be made real.
Anarias2005-03-16 06:38:46
Agreed
Alger2005-03-16 06:52:16
i think... it depends.
cost for fighting people varies. Maybe as a suggestion you could actually supply the herbs and the health and purgatives as part of the rules of the competition. Then the fighter wont have so much cost you can pay them cheap... well not too cheap.

Why did Buho so cruelly crush it?
Soll2005-03-16 16:49:12
He said only cities/communes can have arenas
Amaru2005-03-16 16:53:35
What you need is an unofficial arena, which hosts regular duels and allows people to watch/bet on them, but includes XP loss, restricting them to one room, etc. That'd be good.
Typhus2005-03-17 00:09:28
Heh, demesne, Poison Cloud, fly, shield whore, watch my opponent starve because they can't run..
Richter2005-03-17 00:42:15
Actually, Estarra crushed my dream.
You'd think she'd want -more- of my money, right? I mean... an arena is what, eight million gold? Credits are 3000gp each now? That's 2667 credits, over six hundred dollars.
Hey lookie, a paycheck, seven hundred dollars, and nothing to spend it on! Pity I can't, you know, buy an arena.
I wanted to have the arena be on the rooftops of the city, and in the alleyways, or a mirror image of the place, or even a daylight version of it.
I didn't know we could maybe eventually do gambling, but I've wanted that since back in the days of Aetolia. Loans too, a system for that.
I'd hold FFA's in Deepnight, if it weren't for the fact that people lose large amounts of herbs in a FFA, especially the ones that win. Think about the hour long one that Murphy was in... Nasty on the herbs, this is -why- we have an arena.
I think we cannot have arenas in manses for the same reason that we do not have alembics or pentagrams in them.
They don't want to make them.
Anything can be coded in there, and you'd think they want our money. Yeesh... I know Sierus would have an insane arena if he got his hands on that idea, he has more money than God.
So.
1. We should be able to have manse arenas.
2. I'd host a FFA in the manse itself, but no one would join.
3. Gambling amongst ourselves would be a great system.
4. As great as our gods are, they aren't bending to the customer's every whim. Bend, bend!
That is all.

I think the reason no one wants to duel out of the arena for things like this is because the amount you stand to lose is way more than the amount you stand to gain. If you win ten fights and lose one, you're still probably behind in experience, especially if you're higher level.
Shamarah2005-03-17 01:56:23
Richter, you don't lose herbs in FFAs...
Unknown2005-03-17 02:12:35
Manse's are not meant to be little cities (down Richter, down!) so I think it's fairly reasonable, though sucky, that they don't get arenas.
Aebrin2005-03-17 02:27:26
It's 12 million with FFA function.
8 mil for the arena with dueling function
another 4 mil for FFA.

One room'd be funny, duels would just start and end with an inevitable instakill like chasm or soulless.
You'd need a 5 room arena, one center room with 4 rooms around that center, connected to eachother with diagonal exits. Though it would be a unique and awesome feature if it could be coded a way so there's no herbs or vials used up, but death results in experience loss|gain for winner and loser respectively.

Don't know if you sold the bunch of herbs I donated yet, but if you haven't, you could always put them up as prizes instead of / in addition to creddies.
If I can figure out how to code in MushClient , I'll be back and donate more
celahir2005-03-17 12:36:15
When i get a manse i was planning to make a dungeon/maze in it where people can fight last one out of it alive wins. So long as they only walk out and have no outside assistance its ok.
Thats the sort of thing we should have!
Or a one room pit of death people go trhough a down exit to a trapped room only when one person is left does he get summoned out.
