Well, your a admitted credit whore and need your support group. For others, well, they rather be capable of crafting the item in wood crafting or something...
Torak2005-03-16 23:31:54
Ha, it would be neat from a RP perspective to rip off the pied piper folklore idea and make a furrikin that roams the forest playing flute and such.

Interesting concept... How would you impliment it?

Any weevils in the room the piper roams through immediately burrow out of the trees and follow! Behold, the weevil army.

Yes, I got all my information from his friend. If you meant the newbie channel, OOC is fine there. Novice, no, although it could be excused the first couple times. I hope Charis discussed it with him and didn't just go, "Don't be OOC, or we'll have to kick you out."
Sorry should have been clearer. It was over GNT, and Gwylifar, Charis, My guy, and a few others told him to stop the insanity.
Gwylifar2005-03-17 17:29:04
I've heard the story of this kid's "problem" from four angles so far. Three of them almost agree. His version doesn't very well.
He has a small problem with his credibility. He was very nearly outguilded on at least one prior occasion. I'd also like to add that after threatening to hunt and kill everyone at all associated with anyone who was present, he also promised to hack into Lusternia and crash the entire system as retribution for this grievous slight. That should give you a sense for his credibility, his mental stability, and his likelihood of a fruitful career.
Damned right I didn't punish Charis for the fact that the kid quit. Charis is by no means Gwylifar's favorite person in the world; but this really has nothing to do with her. She was just the person in front of this foul-mouthed, repugnant little troublemaker at the moment his mouth started frothing. Maybe she could have been a little more tactful with him, but the outcome would have been the same, just a few minutes more delayed.
I'd post any random sentence of what he told me, but Shiri would have apoplexy. You can just randomly mix pronouns and icons to get the same general effect.
I look forward to when he tries to get everyone else in the realm shrubbed. Estarra will ban him so fast it'll make his head spin after his ten-second patience-pretext wears out and he starts telling her how much better he is than her. I wish I could be there to see it.
Logs available on request if anyone really wants to see the whole story, but you really don't want to, it's both tedious and nauseating. (It'll take some editing, though. He was insisting on having this swear-fest during the bloodshed in Dairuchi, so I was fighting through much of it.)

I thought she was pretty nice. Maybe I just haven't talked to her long enough.

Unfortunately, I don't have a log of the first incident where he spouted off about how stupid the novice requirements are and how much better Achaea was, though. That was kind of amusing in a dry sort of way. Gwylifar told him that he should have a little lie-down until these strange visions passed, and later, that if he was so sure this imaginary world was so much better and everything here was so awful, he should see if he could find his way back.
At some point he realized he was a hair's breadth from an outguilding, so he apologized to Charis, and she to him. Then he kept quiet. I had hopes it was all just an isolated incident. People have gone farther off the deep end and come back. But while I was hopeful, I wasn't surprised one bit to hear of the subsequent incidents, including the final one where he quit. Still, when he talked to me about it, I patiently listened and then questioned him on details that contradicted other versions of the story I'd heard, and he immediately went into cursing, insulting, and the old "I know better than you about everything" thing. He was far beyond hostile or belligerent; he was that kind of chip-on-your-shoulder thing violent people get when they're caught in a lie and know it.

Putting aside any other issues that may have surrounded this newb, the issue of insanity does need common sense. The realms does not have any proper nouns from the real world: Europe, George Bush, Industrial Revolution, etc. It also lacks science-oriented things: uranium, einstieniem (yes, that is an element), combustion engines, electrical power (despite there being natural electricity), etc. It also lacks certain knowledges: knowledge of atoms (how do you know they exist, or how can you even cognize the concept to begin with?), knowledge of physics beyond primitive things that are useful in physical combat (throwing items and making things fall, etc.), knowledge of DNA, etc. That stuff is imperical data that would need to be observed in order to be known, and if it is unreasonable to assume you have seen something then you don't know about it. For example, until you know that there exist electron microscopes, it is reasonable to assume that no one has ever seen an atom. It also lacks theoretical knowledge in that no historical person has promoted: theories of economics, theories of mortal behaviours, etc. This is a slightly different class. One could use existing things to create these knowledges. For example, one could observe the way prices fluctuate for commodities in response to various things to make theoretical proposals on economics that have not been known before, but it derives from in-game knowledge. Finally, things which have never been seen but are quite common mundane items that *could* easily exist should clearly be "existable". Anyone can make a flute with a shoot of wood and a small blade; making a keyboard synthesizer is not possible with the realm's technology. Make blown glass sculptures is possible; making 100 story sculptures out steel and brick that require mechanical backhoes is not (though *maybe* you could explain away that one with magic). This area just requires some common sense.

Actually, ironically enough, I set one of my guildmates to trying to gather some musicians just last week for a party for Lady Sonata. I don't think I referenced any specific instruments, though.

Actually, Roark, you do raise an interesting point.
What exactly is the state of the sun/moon etc. in Lusternia? I have people swearing blind at me that I'm an idiot for not taking Earth Science courses because I think that Mother Moon's up there all the time (heck, drawdown works every night, so do all my other lunar powers, and it's not as though it's worldwide, just basin-wide), and she's a spirit, not some giant floating rock. Is this the case, or are the spirits more inhabitants of said assorted floating rocks?

You can only hypothesize and make a theoretical knowledge, though with some imperical backing. You note the behaviour of draw down. Is it drawing down the actual moon or the spirit of the moon? Etc. It could be fun to RP a "scientist" that examines things like the way the moon behaves in relation to the Moon skillset, or studies the nature of the taint, etc.
Ceres2005-03-17 19:11:03
Very hard to do, due to inconsistencies needed to maintain game balance.

Yay for Selthar. His theoretical ramblings and postulations have mostly been kept private, though... only semi-publicized thing was the attempt to alchemically augment poisons with Gwylifar... which we are STILL waiting for a response on.
I'm thinking of publishing a paper on alchemy... maybe over spring break, when I have time.

It has always troubled me that the moon rises at sunset every night and sets at sunrise, no matter what phase it is in. But then I say to myself, don't be stupid, self, the moon also doesn't really turn red when I tell it to, and blast people in Latvia that I don't like! (More's the pity.) So I get over it.

the basin is flat and the sun and moon are spirits that wake up and sleep at different times... sometimes they have tea together before one goes to sleep.
