My guild is not corrupt I just don't trust the majority of gamers to be mature about most things.

My point is, how does a treasurer's position even relate to whether or not someone should remain in a guild? There is a need for people who can outguild, that I agree with, but don't just hand it to secs because they are there.

The people who get made secretaries are not the 'majority of gamers' If you trust your Guild Admin enough to let them have outguild, you should also trust them enough to appoint responsible secretaries. At the very least, secretaries with a certain GR (10 would be reasonable in my opinion) should be able to outguild.

just because someone's secretary position means they're essentially the treasurer of the guild, doesn't make that -all- they're responsible for.

No, they're not, but that doesn't mean they are assuringly mature either. Good PR/being connected to the GA and/or Gm and maturity certainly don't go hand-in-hand.

I disagree; if someone is a Secretary of the Treasury, that is all I consider them responsible for in an official way. I won't expect them to teach a Novice or go rescue someone who is in trouble, I will expect them to handle the guild funds.
Faethan2005-03-24 05:04:39
How is someone who is responsible enough to handle guild money not responsible enough to have outguild?
Unknown2005-03-24 05:11:05
They might be responsible enough, but that is not their role. Their role is to handle the gold.

That would be like Peter Costello (Australian Federal Treasurer) having the power to deport anyone he wanted from the country. While he might be a decent treasurer that doesnt mean we should give him the powers that are associated with a totally different portfolio.
Laysus2005-03-24 05:13:04
so why allow a sec to inguild, or to enemy/unenemy, if they're in charge of the treasury?
Unknown2005-03-24 05:15:23
I didn't say I agreed with that priv, did I?
Faethan2005-03-24 05:16:25
If your guild wants to have a guy who is only allowed to deal with money, make them a sec and announce that they aren't allowed to use the other privs. Problem solved.
Dritex2005-03-24 06:46:19
If you have someone as a sec, solely handling money and not being responsible for anything else, I think something is wrong in having them as a secretary in the first place.

Secretary shouldn't be a level within teh guild that is just where you get "officail" jobs to work over, but where you hold influence over the workings of the guild. Sure, you may "specialize" in one area or another, but you should still be responsible for guiding the guild as a whole. Thus need for outguilding being needed.

Meh, our opinions differ. It's no big deal.

First, Secretaries are appointed by the GM, not the GA. The GA can only appoint under-secs.

Second, I disagree with the notion that a secretary whose job is "treasurer" or something like that is not responsible. In my opinion, a secretary is a leader of the guild FIRST and FOREMOST. They have been entrusted with the privledges of secretary by the GM. All other duties that a secretary takes on, such as treasurer or something akin to that, are purely collateral duties.

We have a saying in my profession. I'm a naval officer first, and a pilot second. That same model applies here.

Bottom Line: Trust the secs to have the outguild power. The GM shouldn't appoint someone he/she doesn't trust to do the job. Plain and simple.
