It should be. Their alleged "saviour" was nailed to one.

Why do people call it a cross? =\\ It's a crucifix. Get it right! A cross infers it's equi-armed.

I haven't posted here for a very long time, but here we are...
The word 'cross' doesn't necessarily infer that the arms are of equal lengths.
The 'crux immissa' (or 'Latin/Roman cross') is the name given to the type that was used for Christ's crucifixion and as such is a symbol for many of the Christian faith. A single pole transversed by a cross-piece, at unequal distances from the top and bottom (not necessarily closer to the top, though).
The equal armed cross as used as a symbol for medics and Switzerland, to give but two examples, goes by the name of an 'equiform cross' usually.
'Crucifix' is the name given to an image of Christ upon the Cross, but is also more generally used as a name for the specific Cross itself held as a Christian symbol.
Back on topic though, although I myself do not follow a religion, Pope John Paul II was a great man, working tirelessly to spread his message and to try to bring some more 'good' into the world through his work. Although my Italian is very rusty (in that I know almost none), all I can say is: Resto bene, Papa.

I believe early Byzantine Christians used equal-length crosses for their symbols...

Wasn't the what the iconoclast controversy was over and the great schism?
