Well, here's my theory, so it's somewhere. Remember, there's no real hard evidence for or against any of this.
In the early history of the commune, they built a sort of "town hall" building. During this time, the following of Mother Moon and Brother Hart was less sharply divided and less formalized; the Moondancers and Hartstone were not independent guilds any more than today Blademasters and Bonecrushers are. As time passed, the two followings grew more firmly defined and more separate, and outgrew the "town hall", which was abandoned as a new commune was built up in the trees. During this time, some of the best fighters of the commune were gifted with such things as the Horned Helm of the Moonhart to help them.
By the time of the Taint Wars, the Moondancers and Hartstone were firmly established, each having their own guildhall. But there was still no explicitly "military" organization; any fighting needed was done by those who felt called to do it, from both guilds.
After the Taint Wars, the commune went into isolation. Finally, perhaps regretfully, it was concluded that a military branch would be needed when we came out, since there'd not only be treacherous cities, but also the Taint and its wreckage, to deal with when we came out. Whoever, at that time, wore the Horned Helm of the Moonhart (a gift from Queen Maeve) was one of those who joined, and helped found, the newly forming Serenguard, along with other fighters.
These people needed two things: a guildhall, and a tutor. The old town hall was pressed into service, a few watchtowers added to it. That's why we have a guildhall that's old and draughty, without a forge, and with an archaic library for its central room. There wasn't a place for weapons practice or storage, so the central hall was refitted, a little awkwardly, to those purposes. As for a tutor, there were a whole bunch of centaurs who'd just arrived and were looking for something to do, and were known to be excellent hunters, so one with a talent for teaching was called to duty.
For many years this new guild, formed from followers of both of the Great Spirits and paying homage to both, prepared for the day when finally the commune would emerge from seclusion and they would be put to the test of blood.

What was the topic again? Oh yeah, Serenguard. I think that there is no doubt that the Serenguard were the last guild to form in the Serenwilde. Probably there could even be a link to the time when the centaurs left to the foundation of Serenwilde, as Gwylifar mentioned once (or at least I think he was). So the Serenguard's past must be very recent, also they are the defenders of the Seren just as the name suggests. Imo, the Serenguard are the barbarian tribes of the Basin made out of rogues, rejects, hermits, exiles, or any other folk that was sick and tired of city life. Serenguard are the 100% survivalist clan that decided to live within the commune, eventually got baptized (I was looking for another word, forgot it) as the Serens' protector. Probably in all this, the Serenguard probably worked under the wing of the exiled Centaurs from Glomdoring. This would, imo, show some common ground between the two groups. Both are exiles, both wish to survive in the wild.

Amaru, you probably shouldn't start throwing stones. I've seen your house.

Hey, the Celestines aren't so bad. I think the admin's inactive though, 'cause she's in my order and I haven't seen her forever, and she used to be around at the same time as me all the time when I was Shiri, and I'm around like 45% of the time, so.
But still. The GM rocks for one.
