We're clearly not changing only our bodies, because we take on the attributes and statistics of the race we become.
When a Merian, we have higher intelligence, meaning we have the brain of a Merian, meaning we know the language.

Until dying my hair black, and getting a tan allows me to instantly learn Spanish, and then instantly forget it upon losing that cancerous glow and regaining my normal blonde hair...changelings should not be able to speak every language. Going even further, I do not think they should even speak beyond the language (if any) their 'original' race is.
You are changing your body, and in my opinion, ONLY your body. Language has nothing to do with that change.

You can't really use RL logic to describe a fantasy world.

Also when we become Taurian, we take on their characteristic hot tempered mindsight and can come enraged causing us to strike out at anyone not taurian. That doesn't sound purely like a physical characteristic to me.

That's instinct, it comes with the body.
But it's true that applying our logic may be erroneous. There are no changelings IRL after all (as far as I know ).

technicology, everyone is. if you include changing species outside of one life, cause when you die, you may turn into a bumble bee depending on how you lived your life. that's change species, is it not?

1. A very low proportion of the board users here actually believe that, so stating a religious belief like it's factual isn't a good way to make a point.
2. No. Changelings change form at will (in Lusternia, with a 1 month limit), not just when they die.
Gregori2005-07-28 15:00:33
The only thing I will change into when I die is fertiliser. Kthnx. Bai.

Under the logic exhibited here ("Also when we become Taurian, we take on their characteristic hot tempered mindsight and can come enraged causing us to strike out at anyone not taurian. That doesn't sound purely like a physical characteristic to me. "), one would also assume a newborn Taurian would know the language. ...No. A newborn Taurian may have the temper, the build, the body-type of his people. That's all genetic. Language isn't.

Explain how you instantly know a race's language when you reincarnate into it?

Magic.
(IE - Reincarnation is a pretty shoddy matter, IC. It's just OOC to help the newbies.)

The reason would be simplicity.
1. It only needs changing some entry in your character's data.
2. If you want to reincarnate and become a Merian and a citizen of New Celest, it would be discouraging if you didn't know the language but had to spend lessons/credits to learn it. Too much unnecessary trouble.
It's the same with changelings.
Even if logic tells that instant morphing into the form of another species doesn't give you any knowledge (like the language, which is certainly not written anywhere in your genes), why bother with developing some special code for that when you can just set some variable and voila, race changed.
Sure, there's always Magic, universal explanation.
Unknown2005-07-29 10:29:54
A wizard did it! That's the universal magical explanation!

Changelings should be able to understand all languages, period. If we are able to change into a race, and speak the language, then we should still be able to understand once leaving that form. Simple fact, this is how things already work, there is no theory, this is how the game works and was designed. Perhaps they can't speak the languages in other forms, since their vocal cords/tongue whatever, cannot pronunciate the language, but they'd still be able to understand.
So let me reiterate.
Fact: Changelings can understand/speak a language when in the proper form, how else could Changelings fit in and hide themselves among other races, since most changelings prefer to keep their heritage hidden? It's a fundamental roleplay aspect that cannot be denied using OOC explanations and ideas. They already know the languages as demonstrated, so Bricriu's logic fails regarding learning spanish. It's simply an accepted IC fact (as much as you disagree OOC).
So let me reiterate.

Then I damn well better be able to understand elfen, since I've been either faeling or elfen my entire life until about 2 days ago.

Remove their ability to speak languages of their morphs, and let them keep their native languages, from prior to being a changeling. kthnx.

Read the help file. You are never another race prior, you are a changeling, period. You are born a changeling. When a changeling has children, there is a 50% chance it's a changeling, and a 50% chance it's the other parents race. Changelings know the other languages, since that's sort of a requirement, to you know, hide among that race and not be discovered.

Which help file is it?
And what you're saying is fishy, if you're born a changeling, why do you need an artifact at all? Lose the artifact, you're not changeling anymore. It's only the item granting you that powers.

Not quite true. If, say, Tuek gives his cameo to me, it doesn't do anything. And he can still transform...I think.
See where it says "changeling heritage?" Heritage implies family, not just wearing the brooch.
EDIT: I'm going off HELP ARTIFACTSMISC here BTW.
