After a conversation on a clan, some of us (namely Llexyn, Arilyon, Bricriu, and I) have come to the conclusion that Viscanti should be able to understand all languages. Viscanti are a conglomerate of most of the races. It wouldn't make sense to give them a tainted language, because it would have no real background unless it was derived from Kethuru or something. But because viscanti are generally a mixture of different races, we should be able to speak and understand many languages, excluding human.
Or, if that doesn't work, some sort of racial identifier that would add more to the roleplay. Maybe some sort of sign language or something like that.

Viscant
Magnagoran viscanti have developed this language, half slang and half new words, which takes something from nearly every other known tongue. Even if a viscanti isn't from Magnagora, they are likely familiar with the dialect.
Veonira says something in an utterly incomprehensible mish-mash of odd-sounding words.

Or, being able to understand parts of all the languages...kind of like muttering, where you can only pick out bits and pieces.
Unknown2005-04-11 01:40:57
Ok, so you have a half eskimo/half Irish dad, and a an English/Mongolian/Russian mom. Does that mean you will understand Eskimo-language (dont know the name ), Irish, English, Mongolian, and Russian?
Yeah, that doesnt make sense for the other races though.
I think the idea is they know the one language all the races shared - common.

Why wouldn't it be likely that they'd remember their own languages, and teach it to others who were also tainted...you know, so they could interact on a greater level.
Veonira2005-04-11 01:45:21
I'd like to point out that this is a game, and not everything has to be 100% realistic. I was merely giving up one idea to get something going and get people thinking.
I actually do like Hazar's idea. I just feel like Viscanti need some sort of language or something. And not all Viscanti are a mix of every race, there are people who are basically elfen, just tainted.

The idea behind this isn't so Viscanti can understand people who want to have private conversations. So it's not an idea to get back at anyone.
It's all based on pure RP. Like what Veonira said, Viscanti are a huge mix of races save the humans since they came when Estarra did (unless I read the histories wrong - and even then, it's possible to have Viscanti understand humans as it could be where we bred with the humans, too). So it would be logical to assume that Viscanti could understand all races in a purely RP way.
Anyway, I'm completely behind the idea of this. We're the only race without a language ... except Lusternian ... and well, that sort of bites in a RP view.

I don't think Trill have a language.
Bricriu2005-04-11 01:50:30
She may have been refering to the Specialization languages.
Hazar2005-04-11 01:50:35
Fix that too, then.
Hazar says something unintelligentable in a series of squawks, caws, and clicks.

Ooh, they don't. Pester to get one, then!
Desdemona2005-04-11 01:51:20
Some languages are lost through the generations. Why would Viscanti be able to be predominant on all languages? Makes no sense, at least to me. I don't care if the Viscanti are the Basin's mongrel, they became their own species many of the things from their forefathers SHOULD had been lost. If anything should happen, maybe Viscanti should be able to get their own language or even better... Learn to speack Orclach. Viscanti-Orcs have interracted a lot, why not share the same language?
Bricriu2005-04-11 01:53:22
Maybe because...we're nothing really like them? It would make a LOT more RP sense if we had a half slang, half pre-made language from other recycled languages in the basin.
Llexyn2005-04-11 01:54:06
Well, I'd be happy to have a racial language of our own but hey, why not shoot for the best, first?
Desdemona2005-04-11 01:56:15
You may not be like the Orclach/Orc, but living with the orcs in a village for many years should lead to something, don't you think? It's just like learning the national tongue of a place if you have resumed to moving there and rooting.
Bricriu2005-04-11 01:57:19
If you'd look at most Viscanti, they are elfen-based, at least partially.
Based on your arguement, we should speak Elfen. Won't that be wonderful for listening in?

Hazar2005-04-11 01:59:35
I hate to break it to you, Desdemona, but viscanti come from Magnagora, not Acknor.
Desdemona2005-04-11 02:03:27
No based on my argument, the Viscanti became a unique race with unique attributes so they really shouldn't be able to possess things as distinct as the racial tongues of all the other races... just because they had their origins hundreds of years ago from those races thanks to taint/mass interbreeding. According to my argument, either Viscanti should possess their own disctinct tongue. OR thanks to their close interractions in Angkrag with their orc slaves, it would be greatly possible if during the timespan of their interractions the Viscanti learnt to speak Orclach.
Edit: Actually, Viscanti come from Magnagora and all parts of the world. Whoever got caught by the Taint had chances of engaging into the transformation process that led to the Viscanti. Angkrag is a place for retirement for the Viscanti Houses, so it provides a basis for a long lasting orc-Viscanti interraction.

Yeah, Hazars idea is good.
Or else maybe Viscanti can choose one other language and learn that? Shows the strong point of their heritage.
*shrug*
