Well as most of you would know there are differences to arena fighting and non-arena fighting. Though I'd rather that the difference was just situational and the combat elements were kept the same. Like when you eat a herb, instead of it staying in the inventory could it be moved to the rift instead so we actually have to outr? Same with puffing, puffs are used when it reaches 0 herb is moved back into the rift.

Achaea "fixed" a lot of the differences between arena and non-arena fighting, the key one being that you leave with the same defenses/endurance/etc that you enter with. I think it still doesn't consume herbs, salves, sips, etc, but I agree that this would be a nice feature.
There are those who argue that the arena isn't the real world and shouldn't be exactly the same. However, there are too many fighters who have tailored their scripts to give them every little advantage in the arena and thus inflating their combat rating. For some, this gives them credibility to sell their system, whether they are as good of a fighter outside the arena as inside.
Don't get me wrong, though. I know that 90% of all arena fighters are also decent outside the arena. I still just feel that these inconsistencies in inventory and behavior should be patched up, for more effective training, if nothing else.

Cheap Arena Tactics that I despise:
Spam smoking of all pipes every few seconds.
Not OUTRing or having to OUTR (less supsceptible to Stupidity/Aeon/Pinlegging)
Hmm.. those are the only two cheap arena tactics that come to mind at the moment. I absolutely HATE people who would just spam smoking all their pipes over and over and over again while in the arena. In Imperian it didn't happen because smoking had balance just like herbs, and it doesn't happen outside the arena because your pipes quickly empty.
Thorgal2005-04-13 16:04:29
Well, spam smoking doesn't really work here either, except for rebounding, since you can't smoke coltsfoot off herb balance, but I love the idea that once you outrift something, then eat it, it gets put back into your rift or pocketbelt, same with pipes, but I think that is just too hard to code.
Sylphas2005-04-13 16:20:20
If you just saved the exact state of a character going in, and restored it coming out, you could then just have the arena use the same code outside the arena does; herbs are used up, sips are used up, etc. Then when the fight is over, it's restored, rather than just not getting used up in the first place.
Soll2005-04-13 16:25:43
That'd probably use up too much memory, I'd imagine. Or cause lag when taking the snap shot, and resetting the character.
Richter2005-04-13 16:31:57
I hated in Aetolia when people had timers to eat moss, that would have cost quite a bit otherwise, but they got away with doing that in the arena.
Same with sparkleberry here.

I keep a hoard of 2k sparkle which i use to powerbash with on occaison.
I fight identically in the arena to out of it....nothing changes.

Yeah, some people can afford to eat sparkleberries like they drink health / mana potions. Besides, they're a whole lot cheaper than moss was in Achaea.
Alger2005-04-14 23:41:27
another is the sleeping ent one... that annoys me
Shiri2005-04-14 23:58:11
Yeah, how the ents come back to life if you kill them.
(But it's ridiculous that they can be killed anyway. So whatever.)

Fair enough.
