0 lesbians? Can't be right, poll is rigged...there's arseloads of 'em walking around!
Faethan2005-04-18 20:38:06
I hear that RL statistics are 6% homosexual.
Sylphas2005-04-18 20:45:25
6% seems low. Of course, like 80% of my friends are GLBT, so I'm probably not the best person to be estimating.
Accurate stats are going to be hard to get, because a majority of straight people would gladly say they're straight, and a lot of gay people won't admit it.

10% of any population group will state any answer in a poll or election.
That is, 10% of respondants say Elvis is still alive, 10% of voters will vote for a canidate not expected to win. etc.
Most Lesbians consider themselves bi-sexual. Let me rephrase that better, most women you think are lesbians would consider themselves bisexual

I'm so confused.
What the hell is GLBT, MtF, MLKSDJrfi823ueriof?

Well, you have to keep in mind that there are some parts of the United States (which is where I think my 6% refers to) where alternative sexuality is very frowned upon, and thus is likely to be less common, or at least less commonly admitted. In certain areas the number will be much higher than 6%, in others it will be lower.

And for this reason, the accepted scientific estimate tends to be around 10% of the general population. There are many advocates who argue higher or lower but as you stated quite clearly, there is no sure fire method to test.
Furthermore, it is important to realize that sexual orientation isn't concrete. It exists in a spectrum. This is not to say that as a person's sexual orientation moves along this spectrum that they will have sex with someone they might not otherwise (although it is entirely possible) but... sexual orientation goes beyond "with whom you have sex" in psychology/sociology. There are, however, some rather interesting statistics on persons who do have sex outside of their sexual orientation to test the otherside... although this is often done while intoxicated and their inhibitions are lowered.
Daganev2005-04-18 20:50:45
GLBT.. Gay Lesbian BI Transgender Californa colleges are helpfull on the acronyms!
Roark2005-04-18 20:53:24
Reliable stats are hard to come by. My impression is that advocates on both sides exagerate their stats and all claims that X% of people are *blah* are basically garbage stats. Maybe it's a fraction of a percent, maybe it's 50%. No one knows and probably no one ever will.
Though on a side note, I've heard that there are terms for very obscure orientations, like a guy who likes women but only if she used to be a guy and got a sex change, or lesbians who only like women who used to be men, or heterosexuals who only like transvestites of the opposite sex, etc. So in theory you could have a long litany of options for this poll, for those who think that the options are too slim.

Stats in general are garbage. They tell you more about the people polling and using the information then they do about the people being polled.

And for this very reason, no one should ever trust statistics by organizations that are extremely bias in one direction... especially when said organizations don't have the research/raw data/calculations/etc to back up their stats.

80% of Lusternia wants to sleep with you, Erion.
Akraasiel2005-04-18 21:13:09
Wow, Im surprised that two others actually marked transgendered. Kinda indicates the estimates on the prevelance of transgenderism are a bit off...

Odd, Narsrim. From all that I hear, you're best suited to TAKING punishment.

Lusternia is by no stretch of the imagination an indication of the general population.
