Most of the Monty Python comes to us from Achaea, like when the jesters flee with a resounding "Run away!" There are indeed many Lovecraftian influences here. I think that the tentacles that were dropped by Viravain is supposed to be an example of that. There's also a minor Harry Potter thing for those of you who have mailed letters from Serenwilde, and the Nihilism AB list descriptions were influenced by Nietzsche (though the skillset design itself is not really related). Overall the influences here are quite varied. Most of them I don't understand. Estarra is the master in knowing arcane mysticisms and fantasy, and she throws them in all over the place.

I agree with Rhysus, Lusternia reeks of WoT.

Call of Cthulu is the Lovecraft story, I HIGHLY recommend reading up on Lovecraft. Call of Cthulu was also a great p&p rpg back in the 80's. Am I dating myself?

Nope Thule, I agree. The RPG was the best i've ever played. Now coming to think of it, in the Occultists guild there is a skill called Eldritch Mists, and I KNOW that Eldritch was a word that Lovecraft used frequently. (i'm doing a report on lovecraft in english.)

Thats so funny, i never picked up on the monty python stuff. I like the 'Run Away!' for the jesters as I was a jester for a long time. Oh well. smile.gif

And guess who designed the Occultism skillset... (Hint, her name begins with an E.)

One of the interviews with Estarra talks about the Lovecraft and other influences. I remember the interviewer seemed to hang up on the Lovecraft part, probably because sie was personally familiar with Lovecraft. Other people come here and get hung up on the Celtic myth, or the WoT, or one of the many other influences. Just reflects more about the observer than the observed, I think.

But those tongues covered with mouths are almost exactly identical to a Lovecraftian critter from one of the best-known RPG adventures for Call of Cthulhu (it's not just the 80s, they're still publishing new versions). I GMed that one a couple years ago and had one character make her turning point towards insanity from seeing that tongue.

I only know about Cthulu because of the Munchkin card. I feel sad.

You should know better. Never ever ever pick up a duck in a Dungeon!

Kethuru reeks far more of WoT than Cthulu.

Let's see. Kethuru is trapped between nine Great Seals and influences the world when a seal is broken/cracked. In WoT, Shaitan is trapped between seven seals and influences the world indirectly when a seal is broken/cracked, and directly when all are broken.

Hmm!

I suppose you are correct, but it fits Cthulu well as well. Not the seals but the influencing.

I'm not really that familiar with the legends surrounding Cthulu, but in any comics I've seen him/it portrayed in, it was purple with lots of tentacle things instead of a mouth. I'm seeing the description of Gorgulu in my head, _and_ the world was showered with gigantic tentacles.

My main exposure to Cthulu is through User Friendly...

My friends and I over there (well, them not me) have a slight obsession with Cthulu. Or had, I dunno. But it was funny.

*ponder* I have a plush Cthulu and she is definitly green, with red eyes, and a lot of tentacles instead of a mouth. Sadly, no violet anywhere (I would have loved her even more if she had violet).
The one who was a big eye with a dozen tentacles all around was another puppet, don't remember the name, but we almost bought him too.
