RP? And how does this current event of Rowena and consort getting together constitute bad rp? Imo, that just adds another segment to the story. Maybe the should've broughten Glomdoring sooner, along with the Shadowfaelings... to prevent regular faelings who chose to reside in Magnagora/Celest/Serenwilde getting all cozy.

Well, I don't really know why you should be displeased at all. Like I said before, you should be happy that faeling have the opportunity to be better, even if this requires to become one of Glomdoring's thralls.
114948
Because if he doesn't completely reject his roleplay that he's done so far, and so forth, he doesn't get any benefit, and it means there's no chance of his getting the upgrades he WOULD have been more justified in asking for if Faeling remained unspecialised and simply crud.
Desdemona2005-05-08 03:20:05
You know, it's not like he'll banish in a cloud of dust if he doesn't move to Glomdoring. Having "evil" faeling just adds a new layer of "rp" between faelings. Elryn's rp should be completely independant of whether his race get's a better bargain elsewhere or not. You don't see me changing into Dracnari or even an Igasho because I want to be more tanky and bash better. No, I stay Taurian because I feel identified and like it. You know, it would've been completely ridiculous to ask for a race to possess no specialization... for me, every race should have a specialization. Could we please make rogue Taurians get a specialization please? Or something?

Sorry for this one but the Oklahoman in me is coming out....
Okay lets say you are growing wheat. Since forever the wheat has been grown at Farm A which is in South Africa. Its fine wheat nothing wrong with it. But then off in Lithuania Farm B comes along and wheat that is grown there is stronger and has more nutrients. You can continue to grow wheat at Farm A, but it will never be as good as the wheat grown on Farm B. Thus the wheat is less suited for Farm A and more suited for Farm B.

Des, I haven't moved to Glomdoring. I haven't changed race. Stats aren't going to affect my personality.
But that doesn't mean I am not mightily pissed off that those who chose to follow the original concept of Faelings are now balanced with respect to other races by the specializations. I also think it is a poor decision that in order to profit from this particular specialization the role of your character must completely change from its unspecialized state, as does the actual race itself.
Viscanti, Merian and Elfen specializations do not change the character, merely focus them upon their chosen career by slightly improving them in the direction they were already heading. They do not change from being in essence Viscanti, Merian or Elfen.
This is not true with Faeling specializations.

Aye, so in terms of mechanics, Faelings are now encouraged to associate with taint and the rot and ruin of healthy forest. Yay us!
Aside from mechanics, however, Faelings are NOT any less suited to Serenwilde than Glomdoring. They are born from the union of an Elfen (alive or undead) and a Fae. Now fae are in glomdoring, and there are a few undead elfen, so shadow faelings are found there. But there are still just as many Elfen in Serenwilde and just as many fae.
Desdemona2005-05-08 03:35:56
Could you explain what's the original concept of faelings? To me they are just another strand of forest dwellers, and Glomdoring is a forest. So how is faelings being specalizing in Glomdoring violate the concept of chind of fae and elfen?
Anyway, the only thing I agree with you, is that probably faelings should've been given a general tweak to make them less frail compared to the other races and then give them their specialization bonus in Glomdoring. That would've been fair, yes.
But anyway, you really don't have to even bother with Glomdoring or the shadow faelings. You have your own space in Serenwilde to develope your own side of fae rp, to your advantage... really, Rowena getting involved with consort, and manipulating him the way he did should be to you an act of defilement. If anything, you should be fuming at Rowena for what she did, and corrupting your kind. *shrug*
Edit: You should go punish Rowena for such outrage, Elryn. In the meantime, go teach some lessons in fidelity to Maeve's consort... so he no longer beds with another, not even under influence.

Faelings are not descended from an Elder God. Rather, they are the cross
between an elfen and a creature of the fae. Faelings are almost always
raised in elfen communes, and are given special status by wiccans.
Physically, they look like extremely diminutive elfen, even smaller than
the furrikin, and they all have elaborate butterfly-like wings enabling
them to fly. While not very strong, they make up for that in speed and
intellect.
What is the original concept of faelings from this help file.... THere is no mention of their stance on the taint.

The Fae as I understand it were envisioned to be the spirits of Nature.
The Elfen races saved the spirits of Nature from the corruption of the Soulless once, and forever afterwards bound their fates together in the service of the Forests. Working always to empower the spirits of nature (particularly in their own area) and prevent them from being lost to a second sickness.
I viewed the children of Fae and Elfen as the penultimate beings who were attuned to the forests and the Fae, a close match to the faery creatures of regular myth and legend. For this reason I found them alluring and magical to play as demi-spirits of the forest, utterly linked to the natural world.
Shadowfaelings who spread sickness, disease, rot and the destruction of life and corruption of the nature spirits... they do not align with this concept except as opposed to regular faelings.
Edit: Also, Desdemona, you excel at avoiding what I am talking about. How Elryn views Rowena has NOTHING to do with this discussion, I've never said anything about how he is going to deal with her. Remember, forums = ooc, ie, not in game. I'm oocly disappointed by the decisions made in this event, and arguing from my point of view as a customer of Lusternia.

See? You just stated the way a regular faeling should be acting, and even given reason as to why you should detest or pity shadow faelings.
Faelings, were capable of thriving anywhere were faeling bonded with elfen. But now, you have diabolical faelings spawning from the once dried womb of an undead. Imo, you should channel all your hate and disappointment towards Rowena.

Look, Rowena didn't make these changes to racial stats and game mechanics, the admin as a whole did.
If it was just Elryn that was disappointed in Laeroc's infidelity, then sure, what you're saying would be fine. I'd have an IC problem that I'd deal with IC.
But thats not what we have here. Me, the player behind Elryn, is very disappointed with the admin of Lusternia, the game, in some of the things they have changed. Maybe that disappointment is unjustified because they have some broader understanding of balance and whatnot, but I can continue to explain why I am upset until such time as those reasons are shown to be more important than my own.
Edit: And for the record, I -am- grateful that one of the most important advantages of Faelings, their charm and influence, has been preserved. I'd just like it to be a significant advantage over shadow faelings, to balance their significant advantage in combat.

Elryn, Crow and Night are fae also. So some faelings could have deviated from the path and embraced Crow and Night and sought empowerment through the taint and forest. It doesnt mean normal faelings got the shaft.
Elryn2005-05-08 04:00:22
Nyla, read what I wrote, then read the histories. Sure, some Faelings have always joined the taint in Magnagora, and some have joined the Light and supported the cities in Celest.
But they weren't rewarded and improved over those who follow the original Faeling path.

But the taint coupled with nature made them stronger. Its not just taint. thats why faelings who go to Magnagora arent stronger. Its nature plus taint. and I have read the histories.

Serenwilde: nature.
Glomdoring: nature + taint.
---------------------------------
Difference: taint.
Unknown2005-05-08 10:10:24
Well see there's quite a big difference in that.
Magnagoran Faeling, they've come from a non tainted background into the Taint, meaning the taint is a outside force, so it couldn't change them.
GLomdoring Faeling, the Taint has been since them from the start, changing their body through the womb as well as their younger years, this making them stronger.
Getting Tainted from the start will cause the changes in your abilities, not if it comes after, your more weak to it at a younger age.

Okay, I've skipped at least half this discussion, and normally I'm the sort of person who just says 'deal'. And truly there is nothing to do in this situation besides deal. But all in all, I'm going to have to say that Ialie, Elryn, and the other faeling players who don't want to go shadow-faeling have a very legitimate complaint here.
There's not going to be some great rivalry going on between the tainted/non-tainted faelings. There's not going to be this great RP dynamic that develops as the two sides entrench.
Having poured more material resources into Aslaran RP than anyone else has poured into the RP of any race in the game, I think I can safely say that the pursuit of combat stats is going to leech players away from the non-taint faelings to the point that the non-taints are going to be lucky to sustain a zero growth of dedicated players.
When conventional wisdom says that players could be getting a lot better combat stats somewhere else, players will flock to 'somewhere else' in droves, leaving behind just a core of RP enthusiasts too small to actually build a serious community off of.
So, the shadow faelings may have been the inescapable meta-game choice for specialization in Glomdoring, but no matter why they're there or how justified they are in being there, their arrival has consigned the non-taint faelings to eking out a marginal existence on the edge of extinction -- probably for the entire lifespan of Lusternia.
This is not a choose combat or racial role-play situation, it's a choose combat and racial role-play (or not) situation. The non-tainted faeling players have been dealt a brutal hand. At least let them vent about it without trying to make them out as petty.

Thank you.
And here's an idea: make non-taint faelings overall decent, then have the specializations make small changes to stats that make tainted faelings better in their specific circumstance, and slightly better than non-taint faelings.
Unknown2005-05-10 08:06:51
Well since we're all arguing about Specialized races, why do you see very very few Viscanti outside Magnagora? Or very few Merian outside Celest? Reason: They are specialized there, thus better, Elfen were and are the specialized race in Serenwilde, it was obvious there was either going to be a new race, unlikly, or another race specialized, Tae-dae and Furrikins are probably going to be specialized in Ackleberry, Dracnari in Gaudiguch and Lucidian n Trill in Hallifax, that meant that there was going to be one forestal based race left for Glom, no one wanted Drow thus it left down to Faeling, quit yer bitching, Non-Tainted Faeling are decent, they're just like every other non specialized race, they have their weakness, their health, and their strength, speed, just wait until you get Speed Knights working.
All in all, Stop Whining, Normal Faelings are no worse then any other un specialized race.
Ohh and who says there wasn't Shadow Faeling before the Taint wars, well not Shadow Faeling, just a race like them.

False.
Edit: Oh, and I'm not sure how you can say their strength is speed. We have BALANCE recovery, which primarily affects warrior classes. No person in their right mind would make a Faeling warrior. At least not without turning shadowy.
