Well, it is my understanding the alchemist makes the salt magical, and that is where the mental component enters.
Sprinkling normal salt, no matter how hard you concentrate, won't do anything.
Magically enchanted salt, however, allows anyone else - with or without any intelligence whatsoever - to merely sprinkle the salt to activate the magic.
Hence, I believe the dextrous balance component -is- the major one.

Anyone with or without magic can also invoke a pentagram or magic circle...

Actually, they need to have a basic knowledge of either Lowmagic or Highmagic.
A total newbie can apparently sprinkle magical salt.

You sprinkle a circle of salt around yourself, and a shimmering white orb springs up around you.
There's nothing mental about it, you're physically ringing yourself or someone else with salt.

That is my argument.
It makes sense. It's not a big thing, it would just give salt/sulfur more use.

Changing it from using equilibrium to using balance won't fix the uselessness of magical salt/sulfur. They need to be faster than the similar skills in high/lowmagic to be useful. Right now, they take the same amount of time, or longer than the skills do, therefore making the potions useless.
I would suggest halving the eq time on using salt or sulfur if you want to make them more useful and an actual selling point to players.

Eh, not at all.. having salt and sulfur work on balance would make it drastically more useful than low/highmagic.. to faeling and aslaran. The population of both is quite large, so it wouldn't be in vain, I agree with Elryn! If mugwumps are allowed to shield faster than anyone can void, or even raze, why not Faeling? Having salt and sulfur work on balance would make sense both roleplay and mechanics wise.
(edit: I suggested the same thing several times a while ago.. so yeah)
