Bah, I can't see it until the weekend, I would have skipped school and gone to see it (yea, I'm that pathetic) but we've got our Spring Concert today... Bah!
Manjanaia2005-05-19 18:41:19
Yeah Lucas said it's a tearjerker. Which worried me until I saw the trailer.
Silvanus2005-05-19 20:33:34
I saw it. It was amazing.
The best part (you'll know what I talk about if you see it, but I won't do anything to spoil it):

I saw it last night at 12:00 and got 3 hours of sleep for school. Definitely worth it though.
I wouldn't call it a tearjerker. It had sad moments (plan 66) but it wasn't a tearjerker. Some parts were a bit overdone (like when he first got his suit all on and was like 'GRROOOOOARARRGGHHH', I started laughing) but all the awesome parts made up for them by far. Especially when Chewbacca gave Yoda a ride. God that was so awesome.

I guess I can be the one person who didnt think it was OMFG AMAZING!!!1!!! Granted the special effects/sound,fighting sequences all top notch... what really got me was the storyline. At least with Anakin turning to the dark side. It just wasn't convincing enough for me. I always imagined that Anakin would go through trials much more extreme to finally turn to evil.. here it was more like:
Emperor: "Hey dude, I know this story of a sith lord who could stay alive forever. Maybe me and you could figure that out too and save your hot wife who is supposedly gonna die."
Anakin: "Hell yeah! I'm totally gonna drop everything i've ever learned about being a jedi just cause I had a bad dream about my wife dying! ROCK ON!! GO EVIL!!!"
You get my point?
Anyway I love you Star Wars, but as I have gotten older and learned more about film I have realized you are a serious cheese fest. Simple as that.

There's more to it than that. Anakin was led to believe that the Jedi were plotting something evil and crap like that. Not gonna go into details because I'm bashing and I don't want to spoiil the movie for those who haven't seen it
Annelia2005-05-20 04:59:22
Thing was, in the second movie he was already turning.. Killing the sand people out of hate, for his mother. Marrying his lover(possession and passion).. So by Ep III it wouldn't of taken much, he was already blinded.
Richter2005-05-20 05:30:00
I haven't seen it yet. I stayed home sick today, and I work tomorrow as well. I'll probably camp out saturday morning for tickets, when the 9-5 people have time to see it.
But, we've known some things for 25 years. The whole lava battle thing, Anakin turning into Darth Vader (gasp), and we found out a while ago who Darth Sidious is.
I also played the game a week or two ago, and it had movie bits, and a good part of the story in it.

I don't know when I'm gonna see it. Weekends are pretty much my only free time and the theatre's probaby gonna be jam-packed with crappy seats leftover (I'm not the kind that shows up 2 hours early to get the best seats in the theatre...more the type that shows up 5 minutes late panting to take the seats in the very front row ).

Having seen it, these are my thoughts on the movie, and the prequels:
1: I think the prequels would have worked much better if the entirety of episode 1 was covered in the scrolling text at the beginning of episode 2. Then use 3 whole movies to document Anakin's turn to the dark side. As it is, it feels very abrupt. You can explain it away, and it will sound/be reasonable, but the feeling is still there. I think his turn was done well in general, but too rushed.
2: I HATE the disposable, episodic villians. In the original three, Vader and Palpatine last us the entire trilogy, and are actually characters. Grievous, Darth Maul, Count Dooka, and the Trade Federation are all cardboard cut-outs designed solely to be target practice for the Jedi, and to look cool doing it. I believe the prequels would be better served by having focused solely on Palpatine's rise to power.
3: Obi-Wan comes off as being very young. Referring to Anakin as his brother only reinforces this, especially since he's been training the boy since he was very young. Son would have worked much better, instead of brother. To me, this puts a lot of stress on the relationship between the two, and lessens a bit of the impact of Anakin's betrayal of the Light side.
4: How the HELL did Padme get to Anakin so quickly? Coruscant to the Outer Rim is a long way, even through hyperspace.
That said, the 3rd movie is definitely better than the other two. More emotionally gripping, better action, and, while I can't speak for others, it's really the only one of the three whose events I really care about. It really feels like the other two were solely for the purpose of setting this one up, and that it's really one movie, with a really lone prelude.

I actually found it quite a good description of the rise to power of Sidious. He hatched the clone war plan, with inbuilt instructions to betray the jedi at just the right time. He needed someone (Dooko) as an apprentice who was powerful enough but not too powerful to beat Anakin (and, indeed, Dooko didn't know he was /meant/ to die). The Trade Federation was a ruse to destabalise the republic and believed they were allies of Sidious, only to be betrayed at the very end. They lasted three episodes too, didn't they? It all required a lot of planning on Sidious' part. He was in it for the long run.
I think the ending was just a bit too "convienent", with all the pieces falling into place. But then, we all knew where everyone would end up. Including the memory wiping of the droids. It just felt a little .. abrupt. I did, however, like the ending on Tattoine with baby luke. Even with the right music. It was wonderful.
It also seemed to demistify the dark side a lot. We all knew the darkside was about personal power, but the third episode made it feel, to me, like they were bordering on necromancers. It also helped along why Darth Vader would continue having emotional problems throughout 5 and 6 with his son, Luke, and why he ultimately turned on Sidious at the end of 6. The same flaw which Sidious used to convert Anakin also turned on him.
Rah.

re-read it. Most of what I said has (a) already been said, ( refers to the other movies.

So doesn't . I did't want to know some strange kid called 'luke' would be born or that the Dooku would die! *shock horror*.

Leia's Theme, Luke's Theme comes in, then into Kenobi's, with the scene mirroring the one in episode 4. Perfect. That was my favorite moment in the movie.

Seems Lucas wanted to make everyone aged 12/below hate Star Wars, just as they loved episode I and II.
For example, this thing:
Or burning Anakin.
Or limbs being cut off, massively.
Or almost non-existant Jar Jar (damn, I wanted him to die...)
It helped even more then if they got JJ stand in the front and say "you know what? f you all!" to the camera.
Good.
Time for the arghs:
Yoda fights with a lightsabre... again. Couldn't he finish his opponents off just like he did with those two in red cloaks?
Product placement! Anakin plays on a PSP.
