Go camping, nothing like the sound of crickets to put a person to sleep. Whenever I can't sleep I just open my window and listen to the frogs and crickets
Nayl2005-05-20 11:49:30
I appreciate all of your sentiments, and yes, coltsfoot used to cure insomnia before masochism. (Had a few infinite loops of insomnia there ).
What I meant by sports, is actual sports, like touch rugby, and others.
I used to <3 playing touch at school, but, y'know.
Also, I bike ride about half an hour a day, at about 6am, if I didn't sleep.
Generally it wakes me up, then two days later I sleep.
It's soooo annoying, but yea, I'm going to have to have a break from Lusty, and the computer in general... Once I have everything ready.
Mmm, but the drugs, they're the only real thing worth anything in my life.
As bad as that sounds, the rest of my life is

If you deal with everything else the sleeping can usually fall back in to place after a while. It's like a little child, when they get really stressed they can start wetting the bed again but when the stressors go away the peeing generally does too.
Nayl2005-05-20 14:17:02
Nice analogy, but yea, when I was doing excercise, measured weights, long distance runs and such, I was actually sleeping good.
Oh, and last night I went to bed at 6.30am, and got up at 4.45pm.

Have you seen a doctor? Certain instabilities in brain chemicals can mess with your sleeping patterns (and could have something to do with other problems you mentioned?). I know when I was depressed I was sleeping 16 + hours a day and still feeling tired, and it can swing to the other spectrum of not sleeping at all too.
Nayl2005-05-20 16:20:44
Yea, I really should see a doctor about it.
Funny thing is, my best friends house, at whose place I started this thread.
Dad's an anaestheologist, mum's a GP, and they know I have insomnia.
But yes, doctor is now on priority list. Just behind get more tim-tams.

My suggestion? Sex. Always tires me out, and by the end of a few hours, I'm ready to sleep. Damn me and my comatose-ness.
Desdemona2005-05-20 21:10:24
My suggestions would be:
-Don't take naps midday.
-Make sure you go to bed with a full stomach.
-Have a small walk around the block
-Take a warm bath before going to bed.
-Burn some incense.
-Read a book for a while.
-Turn off bedlight, or whatever.
-Make sure your room is VERY DARK (cool too, personally I have much more ease sleeping in cold rooms than warm/hot), and absent of much distractions.
-Also, perhaps having some on-going soft music playing could help you out... try some trance/techno/classical). Make sure it's not turned very loud.
Edit: By the way, consider creating a sleeping schedule. Try to sleep at all times at atleast 9pm-10pm, make it constant so you create the habit of "trying"or going to sleep early.

Do they have Nyquil in Australia?
I was taking nyquil when I was having issues... its an amazing thing.
As a commedian in the 80s said, the label should be changed from 'May cause drousiness' to 'May cause a coma'

It's true, too. I once took Nyquil at work, as it does wonders for my migraines, for some reason. Holy crap, it was like I was driving sh t-faced drunk.

I would say these two things are a big no no, especially the eating. If you eat before bed you are still trying to digest while you go to sleep and it can make it harder to sleep and cause you to store more fat.
Also, don't read books in your bed.

Sleeping pills are bad. Try something more natural. You can get natural sleeping tablety things. Lavender on your pillow helps. And drinking warm milk.

Pfft, so young and naive. Stick with sleeping pills and alcohol! You'll feel happy and sleepy, its the win win.
Nymerya2005-05-21 02:24:04
Someone's already suggested lavender, and I have to say... that's what did it for me. Breathing exercises/meditation (as weird as it sounds) works as well. Warm baths don't work either, because your body has to be at a certain low temperature before it can sleep (for optimal sleep, anyway). There's a million other techniques I know as well.
Also, reading, and/or playing Lusternia before bed isn't the best way to go, because it makes your mind active. And thus, it's harder to settle down and sleep.

Basically I'm saying, not to go to bed on am empty stomach. Meaning, have a good dinner or something that will have you satiated. Anyway, regarding reading before bed, I find it quite relaxing to read before bed. The last book I read as a "bedtime book" was Angels and Demons, which helped me relax. The important key, is to relax yourself when trying to sleep, in prefference, I suggest avoiding medications.
Anyway, if you want check this out: Sleeping Suggestions. It's something I found giving suggestions on how to construct "health" sleeping habits, to avoid things like insomnia.
Edit: By the way, take notice that the suggestions that I've gave in my first post are those things that help -me- sleep... whenever I want to have a good sleep, I am not Nayl, so I dunno what she may find useful/helpful to create some firm sleeping habits. Personally, I think it's about creating your own ambience. For me it is: cold, dark, and quiet (with the exception of soothing music playing in the background). Oh, also, try not to oversleep. Create your own sleeping pattern. Sleep early (9-10pm) wake up early (7am).
Edit: changed something that didn't make sense.
Edit: I think that reading before bed is something that works, if you abstain from reading something that stimulates you. Or else, you'll just find yourself more active. By the way, don't become too confy with the bed, if you are not about to go to sleep. Make sure you condition yourself to consider the bed as an SLEEPING DEVICE ONLY.
Edit: Also check out this About sleeping.. Sleeping disorders are very common nowadays, I dunno why you wish to leave the life of a night owl. :/

Actually Nayl, drugs could be a reason for your insomnia.
All you have to do is have a healthy lifestyle.
I'm sorry to hear you're taking that crap, you better stop it, really
Good luck.
Sleeping on a full stomach can get you killed too, seriously .
Bah stop the drugs Nayl
You're such a nice girl, it can hurt you, even dope can do bad things to your body and brains.

I tend to agree with the physical exhaustion advocates. Hehe. If not exercise, then staying awake till you can't stay awake anymore. I used to sleep 2 - 6 hours a day or so for weekdays, then crashed during the weekends. Never had insomnia. Sleeping 8 hours a day now because my job is killing my feet, and I keep waking up in the middle of the night.

I hate to be the grump and sound unsympathetic (when in fact I'm very sympathetic), but since it's in my avatar title, I guess I will. Shouldn't this thread be over in The Real World somewhere?
Manjanaia2005-05-21 16:52:42
If the rest of your life is then that could be an issue. And it is a really bad situation if the only thing worth anything in your life is drugs. It sounds to me that your insomnia is an emotional thing rather than a physical thing. Maybe find someone to help you with those things?
