I hate Anime, its too unrealistic, I wish it was more based on stuff like R.A. Salvatores books because that would be neat tongue.gif

I hate people who hate anime angry.gif

Saying it's too unrealistic just shows you haven't seen much of it. Anime is one of the main art forms of an entire country. There's anime of all types, besides the DBZ crap shown on fox and toonami.

Anime isn't at all a part of culture in Europe in the same way it is in the US, unless you actively seek it out like Shiri probably does.

I have no experience of it, except manga filtering in from other areas of expertise, but don't care to find out. It seems a bit immature.
Unknown2005-05-24 22:43:52
Touche, I thought you lived in the US.
Torak2005-05-24 22:44:52
Well, I have watched DVDs and PPV shows of it, and I never found it the least bit attractive, I found alot of the plots tried too hard to not be linear and held too much randomness(Not that I can recall any off the top of my head because I watched them once and once only) and alot of the themes completely rediculas(Like my spelling sad.gif ).

Argh. This thread evolved into people fighting with each other over who's favourite author/fantasy series/imaginary friend is better. Just as I predicted.
Move it to real life. Or better, close it, Marcalo's original question's been solved for a long time.

And bring back the old "huh" smilie.

Watch GITS, then complain.

EDIT: Argh, it's contagious.

Gits? I hope that isn't supposed to make sense to me..

Ghost in the Shell. It's more mature then Lusternia. Especially the second movie.

Whatever. I'm not saying to go back to the topic, as it was ended on the 6th post or somethin' like that. I want this thread moved to Real World, as I am leaving the boards for now and no one deserves a chance to skyrocket their post count by confusing thread hijack - no one but me, that is.

YEs master, let us all rush to meet your commands.

Since Forgotten Realms was one of the first mediaeval fantasy worlds, and doesn't involve giant turtles and what was the other one, treasure chests with legs, obviously it will be 'bland' to your tastes.

If Faerun is 'bland', Middle Earth is surely the blandest of the bland, and yet even with the noticeable lack of characterisation, it's considered a timeless masterpiece. Everyone is entitled to their tastes. Marcalo, Revan and I clearly prefer classical fantasy genres, and you prefer reading about giant turtles and walking chests.

Please. "Medieval fantasy worlds" were already a dime a dozen when Faerun was nothing but a glint in Ed Greenwood's egotistical little eye. I'll refrain from further comment on either Faerun or Salvatore beyond saying the both have my contempt.

As for the Middle Earth, it's only the horribe, droning writing style where the books fall flat. For world and history they remain unrivaled to this day in the intricacy of their development.

And I personally find great irony in a fan of the fantasy genre prattling on about 'realism', and being unable to recognize that whimsy (a la Disc World) can be used to sugar coat philosophy so deep that the general public would otherwise find it far too bitter a pill to swallow. The first Disc World books were little more than RPG satires, but 'Small Gods', for example. is one of the most profound philosophical works of the era. It just happens to be a fun read, as well.
Amaru2005-05-26 09:58:28
Disc World is philosophy.

Right.
Shiri2005-05-26 10:09:35
Hrm. I found it less that Discworld was philosophy covered up by being a good read and more like an ATTEMPT at philosophy that always ended up seeming rather lame and corny because of the context he fit it into. Small Gods was a good read, as you say, but I think the philosophy was sort of reduced and made rather petty by the surrounding turtles etc.

As with all good studies that you can focus in... everything becomes that focus. i.e. Everything is economics, philosphy, art, language, communication, politics, etc.

...again in English for us simple people?
Amaru2005-05-26 12:14:44
He means that, say you study economics; you begin to see everything in an economic context. English, and you see everything in a cultural and literary context.
Shiri2005-05-26 12:25:33
Oh, I see. *will try to figure out how that's relevant later*
