An Athame is, in the wicca "religion", the symbol of a penis.

Wiccan religion. It's as much a religion as Christianity or the Ba'hai (sp?) movement.

It's only male under certain circumstances such as during ritual actions of plunging the Athame into the Chalice - the chalice being a symbol of female fertility, ie. a womb.

Typically though the Athame is used to cut through and direct energy and there isn't a lot distinctly male about that.
