"What's a donk?"
"I'M A DONK!"
....sorry, had to.

Artillery is such an odd word for what they use today.

Why is that daganev? we still use proper artillery guns, horse drawn style except its a truck instead of the horse.....damn budget cuts

The repeated statements that Serenwilde must hate Magnagora due to the history of the Taint continues to confound me. Here's a relevant analogy:
You live in Japan. Japan has 3 cities that are different, yet still share the same overall philosophy (i.e., Communes). One day, the United States drops an atomic bomb on one of your beloved cities, destroying it utterly, and cutting off communication with a second. Your city is now alone.
Fast forward to present day. You now want to destroy all countries that possess nuclear weapons? Yes, Britain, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, France and Russia are to blame, and must be utterly destroyed.
That is essentially the point of saying "We hate the Taint, Magnagora must be destroyed for having it." To me, that doesn't make a lot of sense. Should you mistrust Magnagora? Definately. Want to destroy it? Probably not. If anything, there is far more historical reason to hate Celest (as the city that actually destroyed Glomdoring and caused the loss of Ackleberry) than there is for Magnagora.

Erm, how about we hate Magnagora because of their attacks on Modern Serenwilde? At least that is why my character hates Magnagora.
History can be read in many different ways and I don't think it can guide our actions -too- much, except that we must endevour not to repeat the same mistakes.

Doesn't artillery include laser guided misles and other smart weapons these days?
Nokraenom2005-05-27 07:59:22
I never questioned the validity of disliking Magnagora due to present or recent actions. I'm merely challenging the commonly held view that Serenwilde absolutely must hate Magnagora because of the histories and them being Tainted.
However, I would caution against being too entrenched in the "I hate OrgXYZ for ReasonABC" mindset. I'm not sure if it was you, Quidgyboo, but someone earlier in this thread stated how they hated the continual conflict with Magnagora. If you or your character can't see past that to at least a degree of not being constantly consumed by murderous rage towards Magnagorans, the conflict will perpetually continue.

I do hate the conflict and so does Laneth for the most part.
And he isn't consumed by murderous rage, he believe Magnagorans, especially Geomancers, to be disguting brainwashed fools. These beliefs are shaped by his experiences and yes he can and does work past them when he has to but they are still there and they are very valid.

If it becomes more difficult to enter faethorn, it'll just become even more based around group combat, no one will enter without a very large group. And the encouragement of that spam fest is one of Lusternia's problems if you ask me. If the faethorn bit becomes even more group-based than it already is I'll have no desire to ever get involved in it again.
Daganev2005-05-27 08:43:46
If people would be reasonable.. which I highly doubt will happen... group combat becomes better for the individual people, because your less likely to get jumped as an individual since your not of any threat level
Nayl2005-05-27 09:55:28
That, or because you could form up into a group, they will kill you.
And because they can.
And because they can.
Daganev2005-05-27 09:57:10
yeah its the whole "because they can" bit that throws my whole thoery off.
Nayl2005-05-27 10:05:35
This, afterall, is a game.
And people, in a game, enjoy being stronger than others.
At least, this is taken from my basic psychology knowledge.
People like to feel superior.
Hence, if they can kill you, they're 'bigger'.
I guess.
Note: I probably enjoy it more than everyone else.

Actually Daganev, your idea is wrong in another way, just because the odds are in favor that an individual won't be targetting, doesn't mean they're any safer. Unless you run as soon as the first person on your team goes down you're just as likely to die when you get targetted eventually, if not more likely, since once you start getting hit by a group you're often screwed (if you don't have serpent/trueheal/lichdom anyway).
Point is, I still think Glomdoring just needs totems and Faethorn should be open. If getting in and out takes more effort, it will be harder to escape a group, and thus people will be forced to go in with a group, and the entire experience will become that much worse.

Jello, I agree.
The archways help -now-. But in the long run, when everything's all said and done, it will be better if we can re-connect them.
Any other partial remedies people? I'm wracking my brains trying to help here, since I can't do bugger all in game at the moment.

If by laser guided missiles you mean vietnam era HE shells and other smart weapons you mean someone on the ground radioing back whether or not the shells hit, then sure.

Wouldn't it be easier just to connect from Etherwilde/Etherglom to Faethorn using different exits (ie, east and west) to create a 'kink' so that only one room is in direct line of sight from either side?
Nayl2005-05-27 10:40:38
Or, a kink, se-sw one room down the pathway?
That works
That works
Shiri2005-05-27 10:46:08
Easy way to do that? Remove the rooms "Backwards Avenue" and "Twisted Pathways into the Tainted Mist" (w/slight inaccuracies I imagine as I can't be bothered to go check.)
Unknown2005-05-27 11:15:13
I agree, that would be good. It also wouldn't be possible to set up an unbreakable demesne over the entrance rooms.
Also, one of the biggest reasons faethorn fighting is lame is because it's all about wisping others into your group instead of anything resembling fairness. Change wisp already

PEOPLE! USE MONOLITHS! Preferably flamed ones. If -we- can do it to avoid Ethelon and Chade wisping us into huge groups of you lot when you're around, -you- can learn to do it too.
