You allow an infinitesimally small mote of cosmic fire to manifest and direct
it at a krokani guard. Cosmic fire blasts forth, dissolving his flesh in a
sparkling current of energy.

A krokani guard catches your feet with the end of his pike-staff, sending you
sprawling to the floor.

there's 433 damage
You cease wielding a tower shield in your left hand.

I wasn't noticing any change in the damage I was taking since I got armour, so I tested it and it seems I take as much damage with armour as without.
Am I doing something wrong?

Well, first of all, those were two different attacks the guard did, and thus they did different amounts of damage. Try to test the same attack (same attack message) on you, with and without the armor.

ok, so it seems there's a small difference, but the stats on my chainmail and tower for cutting add up to 94. this should effectively eliminate the portion of damage modified by armour, which means I should be taking HALF damage, not 77 less....

Mob damage is hard to say, it is affected by armor somewhat, but to a much lesser degree than PvP damage. Also since mob damage fluctuates, it is very hard to get consistent numbers, even if you didn't vary anything. Lastly, there are some aspects to armor protection, they can either stack or protect invididually then combined. Also, since there is a upper limit as to how much protection armor can protect from physical damage.
Your tower might be protecting a % of the damage you took after your armor absorbed some of the damage, or it might be absorbing a % of half the damage, while the other half is absorbed. It's hard to tell unless gathered a bunch of numbers against a particular mob without any armor, with shield/no armor, with armor/no shield, with and without other magical defenses.

I heard that armour only modifies a certain amount of the damage you take, where as the rest of then damage goes through unmodified. If that makes sense.
Terenas2005-06-02 22:15:50
Yeah, that's true. Take Achaea for example, there is Kaido resistance which reduces magic damage by a flat 10%, and there's the ring of Magus (originally priced at 750 credits) which is described as 15% magic reduction.
If you're taking 1000 damage from a magic attack, Resistance will take off a flat 10%, so 100 damage, and you end up taking 900.
But the Ring of Magus, even though they say it gives 15% magic reduction, it is actually 15% of a portion of the damage reduced. So if you're getting hit by 1000 damage, and the attack has a reduction portion of 1/2, then the 15% damage reduction is applied to 500 damage only, giving you 75 damage reduction total. It obviously gets worse with magic attacks that has even smaller amount of their damage reduceable, so you might end up reducing a whopping 60 or so damage out of a 1000 damage attack. Good use of 750 credits.
Anyway, when players realized how much b.s. that ring was, they reduced the price down to 275 credits.

Thanks for all your input everyone! But it seems I'm going to have to kiss my aspirations of bashing astral as a human goodbye...

Nonsense! The specialized guardian races all have lower constitution than you do. I deal with the damage, and I only have 2.5k max health.
Ceren2005-06-03 01:39:43
You can also kill things about twice as fast as me.. the disadvantage of humans, unlike other races that have one or two bad stats, is that all their stats are bad (bad, average.. same thing)
Acrune2005-06-03 02:15:52
Bah, I'd love to have a permanant 12 con. Just take on one astral mob at a time.

Then reincarnate
Ceren2005-06-03 02:19:15
One astral mob at a time is all I can do, actually.. but whatever meager experience I gain from this is quickly elimanated when a team of 'em comes after me and makes me vitae/hermit. It's an experience stalemate, if you will... and that's why I can't bash astral
Acrune2005-06-03 02:21:05
I can do it with 10 con. You can do it with 12.
And I'll nevar, EVAR change from merian. 18 intelegence is a beautiful thing. Especially with knowledge and war blessings, a truefavour, and a herofete.

i was bashing astral as a human at your level ceren. I only reincarnated dracnari so I could tank more than one lobstrosity.
If you have trueheal - trueheal;fly. If not, take a friend, like moi, and we can bash lobstrosities together. Eat a piece of con food (Trae's store!), get me to bless you, we can go.

It annoys me to no end how everyone except me can manage astral, even people with 10 con!
But yeah, bashing in a team sounds nifty..

Hajamin2005-06-03 04:57:15
The way armour works against mobs is simple. Take the average stat of ALL armour that you can wear, and that's your armour class against them. Mobs don't target body parts like players do, so it uses the overall armour. So that means if you are missing part(say head) you are losing alot of resistance against mobs. They do have different damage types aswell, but you all know that.
Ekard2005-06-03 08:31:31
Shield counts too?
Terenas2005-06-03 16:27:44
In that case, doing forgings for all your armors, helms, and shields need!
Ralshan2005-06-03 16:35:34
So, just to confirm because I'm dumb about this sort of thing, full armor includes either a helm/greatrobes, or a helm/shirt/leggings, yes?
Edit: Or obviously, a helm/plate for the warrior types.

Ceren2005-06-03 19:07:48
hmmm... I have a greathelm, chainmail shirt, leggings, and tower, if anything I should be taking even less damage than if just chainmail and tower counted. That is, unless the whole average was lowered by halo's 25%, in which case I would be better off without putting up halo
