Racial Balance

no, no one has fire runes but there's one whole mage class that shoots heat damage out of their staff. Not to mention tons of mobs do fire damage too, theres a burning affliction etc etc.

Syrienne, I fight Icarus a lot, you can ask him. If i could do it as an Aslaran, i could do it as a faeling for sure because statistically there wasnt that much difference. Also ebonguards have more protection that ur'guard as of the moment. Also you and me have fought twice, thats far from dueling all the time.
Syrienne2005-06-04 23:48:20
Heh well surely you mean the 30 minutes in the FFA in which neither of us gained an inch either way. I mean if Alger is so blazingly awesome with no changes made to Faeling he should be handling me just fine as an Aslaran.
Malicia2005-06-04 23:55:18
Personally, from what I've seen, specialized faelings (lords) need to take a hit. Say..drop them down to level 2 balance recovery, although that might not make much of a difference, less CON, less DEX and more disadvantages. They're basically speedy Elfen Lords. There isn't much difference between the Elfen and Faeling Lords in terms of stats, but when when you look at their advantages- OH EM GEE. Sipping bonus? Level 3 balance recov, level 2 health regen in forests. Meh, this has all been over before, I'm sure.

With all of that said, I'd love to see a huge overhaul but don't hurt the Elfen! sad.gif
Alger2005-06-05 00:03:55
you talking about that time i was looking for my cat while you were trying to kill me? tongue.gif Which includes you running multiple times, and kidrean attacking me with that whelp of his and an astral goat? Of course that one time is considered to be all the time now aye Syrienne tongue.gif Look i dont want to go into an ego battle, but please dont use things like "I duel with him all the time" just to add weight to your argument when this "all the time" of yours consists of the numbers 1 or 2.

That last sentence of yours did not make sense. Theres a big difference between a shadowlord and an aslaran ur'guard. Syrienne, look a lot of people didnt even know what we meant by shadowlord stunlocking till we showed them on the test server. I've tried to explain that to you on the day they released the specialization and you didnt get it, a lot of people didnt until they saw how absurd it was on the test server. Thats not the only thing as well...

Shadowlord Faelings were implemented, and now all the unspecialized faelings feel bad, and all the races without specializations feel wronged.  If you greatly improve a class with no specialization, when it receives one, we have this same problem all over again.

You CANNOT, CAN'T, ABSOLUTELY SHOULDN'T balance an unspecialized race with a specialized race in mind, unless it's a solid fact that that race will never receive a specialization.  If you do every specialization that comes into the game will create this same problem.

I don't think so. Specialized Furrikin/Tae'dae in Ackleberry, specialized Trill/Lucidian in Hallifax, or specialized Dracnari in Gaudigach will not cause the same scale problems. These are specializations which fall within the original concept of each race, meaning that those who choose to exist outside their 'natural' or 'ancestral' environment can expect to be at a disadvantage and the essence of their race is not changed. In fact, I don't doubt most who play these races will be expecting to specialize in their racial home.

The specialization of Faelings is much different, and it is my suspicion this is because it was a deviation from the original intent of specialization. Ironically, it is probably because of the readily apparent deficiency of Faelings that an original plan to have a second Elfen specialization in Glomdoring was abandoned. This is only my theory, however. Regardless, it is a specialization that has caused no end of problems not only because it redefined the original concept of the race (I chose to play a Faeling, not an imp), but also because it took a race with tremendous disadvantages with almost corresponding advantages and removed the negatives. Well, at least in the case of Shadowlords, Shadowcasters in balance terms are fine.

Because Elfen and Faeling are now supposed to be equally suited to both communes, balancing unspecialized forms of these two is much different to balancing unspecialized Merian and Viscanti.

If you want to see racial population counts, go to http://www.lusternia.com/players.php?search=honours and select a race. At the bottom it will show you the total of matched players.

Well, that isn't very useful in terms of how successful the races are at the game. I imagine that shows both active and inactive players, and those of any level.

The ratios should stil be about the same though, I think.
Elryn2005-06-05 01:04:25
Well, I believe taking the top characters give an indication of which races are most successful at the game, and hence are useful in balance purposes. The overall numbers just show what initial choices players make about which races appear fun to play.
Unknown2005-06-05 01:12:04
I don't think that is representative at all. There are many players who aren't worried about bashing or might but instead concentrate on other roleplay.
Elryn2005-06-05 01:13:14
Aye, in which case stat balance and racial advantages/disadvantages are irrelevent.
Unknown2005-06-05 01:28:45
I diasagree again. Player A may not be hell-bent on getting to lvl 85, but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the same chance as any other to be involved when it is called for. Player A also plays race Z, which we all know to be a crappy race. So, Player B comes along and Player A has to defend their Guild's hall. But, even though Player A and B happen to be roughly the same level and might, Player B plays Race X, an obviously more powerful race. They have pretty much the same fighting and curing skills, yet still Player B wipes the floor with Player A.

You can't base sweeping changes on a small portion of the players.
Elryn2005-06-05 01:44:02
But I'm not saying ask for the opinions of these players, just use the proportions of how many achieve. In your example, out of the hundreds of players of Race Z, there should be a certain number who fall into the achiever bracket. These are the ones that will fully make use of their racial statistics. If Race Z is truly awful, there will be very few of those achievers who can excel using their race, and also few who will remain with the race as they ascend in the rankings.

Its not about excluding other sources of information, or player thoughts and opinions.

Race stats don't matter much when it comes to experience rankings. It can be done as any race. It just takes patience and time, nothing more.

Character stats really only matter when it comes to PK.
Syrienne2005-06-05 01:57:26
Heh whatever Alger I only ran to avoid your contagion, you know this, if I had tackle then I'd tackled instead of run, I wasnt running from you I never got in trouble once, the only problem I had at all was when I lost my endurance. Beisdes the only reason you were able to walk away and not die is proof of my point that stances are TO powerful, they're ridiculas the way they destroy a knights accuracy, even with high chance to hit rapiers.
Terenas2005-06-05 01:58:25
I agree with Thorgal regarding elemental runes, the damage difference from a knight with runes and a knight without runes is incredible, sometimes double the amount at least. If you want to balance the races for knights, then elemental runes should be brought into consideration, a fast warrior race like Shadowlord without elemental runes would easily do more damage over time compared to a Brood Viscanti without elemental runes, attach runes on both of them and the damage over time of the Shadowlord would jump up tremendously.

Regarding racial upgrades, I would love to see something similar to Imperian implemented, such as Human getting a chance to permanently add a point in whatever stat they choose at level 50. Racial abilities would also be very nice to have as well, abilities that are actually useful, not like the Tae'dae bearhug, or Taurian Rage (don't lasts long enough). Pretty much right now, all the races can be grouped into 4 types- specialized races, strong and stupid races, half decent races, and RP (crappy) races.

It would be nice if Elfen Lords got a +2 con at least, 12 con for a warrior race is laughable or having that high 15 charisma, High Elfen are pretty balanced though.

Imperial Merians are very good at the moment, but Merian Lords seem a bit lacking. They aren't particularly that great, just a lot of average stats, and again the 14 charisma doesn't really do much.

Brood Viscanti is fairly powerful, but when you compare them to Dracnari, their low Int really makes them pale in comparison. Giving them +1 Int, for a total of 10 would be somewhat useful.

I have a question for you, Malicia. If you didn't fight back, just stood there and tanked my damage, could I kill you? Ever? (Note that I don't have behead, so that's out.) You already have somewhat of a clue of the damage I do, and my weapons are pretty good. So, would I have any chance? The impression I get is that my weapons just bounce off of you, and the niricol is more annoying than any other damage/afflictions I do.

Also note that when I was hitting you, you were very rarely dodging / parrying, as I was swapping around- so you WERE getting hit nearly every swing.
Elryn2005-06-05 02:01:51
Can we leave knight issues for the knight thread?
Syrienne2005-06-05 02:03:13
Also in response to your stunlocking deal. I did get it, I understand it fine, but just because I know about it doesnt mean I'm going ot run out and abuse it, I havent used that cheap trick one time nor shared that theory with anyone. It was never my intention to exploit such things.
Unknown2005-06-05 02:05:06
There's apparently 492 trill at last count, but rwho for me always shows either just me, or me and 1-2 novices. No other established players seem to use trill.
Unknown2005-06-05 02:05:43
Yeah, useful racial abilities for every race would be great.
