Encouraging Roleplay

Not sure if this has been brought up yet but I'm going to.

Aetolia has an "Esteem" system going and I like it a lot. It encourages people from being OOC and recognizes those who are very in character with their role. The ability to recognize people for their efforts of roleplay is something every player has depending upon their own "esteem". If you have a high esteem, you are able to use certain channels, shouts, contest for leadership positions, etc. Even more privately, you can recognize someone for being a quiet roleplayer that doesn't like to boast their point of doing it. On the other hand, if you are caught being OOC over a channel, shouts, posts, etc, you find yourself penalized and unable to have those privs.

It's set up so that how you esteem a person, you need to give a reason for it, which is monitored by the admins and the person giving the recognition can be anonymous or not. I think this would be a really good way to promote and encourage roleplay in Lusternia.

Yeah, I think it was Selthar that was trying to make explosives for years and years. It got him nothing. -Had- he gotten something, people would have said 1. That's not fair, 2. I want some 3. Nerf Selthar.

No, but if said mage were consistantly tinkering with his subject of study, roleplaying out such, tampering with existing spells in hopes of learning something about them, discussing with a group of like minded individuals, offering papers regarding their research, the whole nine yards, then it becomes a matter of a divine noticing it. But then again, that isnt coding it either. If you wanted to hard code roleplay into the learning process, that would take a revamping of the whole learning process, and would ultimately prove less profitable, because if players can grow by roleplaying the growth process, then what reason do they have to pay. It'd be a bad idea to hard code it, both from the perspective of how much effort it would take and the financial issues it would cause.

Honestly, it just makes me sad that he wasn't rewarded with some method of making explosives. I think it's a very good idea, really - especially if you worked in Gaudiguch/Nomads/Dairuchi right.

A line obviously has to be drawn. I as the player have technical knowledge Rhysus could never dream of. With the tools Rhysus theoretically has available to him, particularly factoring in magic, I -could- make some really nifty things that would utterly destroy the realm. But there's a balance that needs to be struck between facilitating good roleplaying with tangible changes and discouraging people from behavior that's just not going to go anywhere.

Of course - but there's really no harm in setting up a shop in the Nomad camp that sells bombs for 3000 gold each, which do room-wide damage, one time. Nothing great, but it can be thrown, after being lit. Just little eggs like that, which make roleplaying seem worth-while.

I've heard negative comments about that system concerning player abuses. I do not think any type of power like that should be placed in the hands of normal players. It can easily be abused, even if putting it through requires a person to give his or her reasoning behind it. Power like that should remain in as few hands as possible, especially since you have gaming cliques who could easily be convinced to support each other when it comes to messing over a person they do not like.

Aebrin, GA's can have projects, I think I have three.

Your idea though, about smoothing out the rough edges makes sense, however it doesn't really fix the problem. Its a question of balance: wether we need the big things, or the little things, because we don't have a staff that can do everything at once.

And I hope Rhysus will agree with me when I say esteem was an abomination. When I was a stupid newbie (as well as younger and less mature) we'd find reasons for us to gang up on people we didn't like and drop thier rolepoints to almost nothing. If you issued it, the gods said "Well we have this system, and the system is working, and your rolepoints regenerate anyway".

Stupid idea, horrible abuse.

Edit: Wow, ninja.gif'ed

No harm? Are you on crack? I dread the day Lusternia has bombs.

What next, muskets? Classical fantasy, please...

Not gun-powder bombs - liquid fire, more or less.

But I don't like gaudiguch, would never use it, and honestly don't care. biggrin.gif

One of the things he was RPing was trying to make explosive potions. Not bombs.

He asked on market all the time, and talked to players. Its too bad no one ever "figured out" how to make them.

We have the tools, yes. But that's about as effective as putting together Rhysus' air guitar band. You can pretend, but ultimately, it doesn't get you anywhere, nor are you actually having any effect on anything, except some people might think you're crazy.

Speaking of, I look like a boybander. Think Rhysus wants me for a lead singer? happy.gif

I'm tone-deaf, color-blind, and fashionably uncoordinated. Those are the requirements, right?

And, it's sad when really awesome RPers are just ignored.

It's a hardcoded MUD. You have to do more than just roleplay, else everyone is going to see you as an idiot. I see newbies who have great roleplay and think... if they just made an effort in the game, they could be great characters. Roleplay isn't enough by itself, as you and Guido proved.

Yea. =\\ One day, I'll care enough to learn to fight, and be half-decent at it.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that's some funny sh*t, ain't it? biggrin.gif
Amaru2005-06-17 18:43:38
Not necessarily fight, but something instead of expecting your pure MUSH style roleplay to be rewarded.

Yeep. Someday, maybe. happy.gif Probably not, though. Heh. And I don't expect rewards - I roleplay for the enjoyment therein, and when I'm tired of it, it grows exhausting, I stop. And generally come back, eventually. But I can see how some people need rewards. Shrug.

EDIT: Actually, I do get a reward out of it - it's like a really, really good book, like Malicia said. And the ending isn't certain, and it may never be. But that doesn't mean it can't be fun, you know? I roleplay to learn more about the world, and maybe, maybe not, impact it. I've learned when my head gets too big, it generally gets violently deflated. Har.

Influencing is the best RP tool we have, sadly its very very broken.
