I was tasked to write something involving Greek mythology and this was the result.
Beyond!
Heed the mariner's warning!
Forsake not the omen of the albatross!
Ware the eddying pool. . .
Whilst thou set sail on a sea of midnight fancy?
To suffer journey perilous and risk watery death in a storm of sundered souls.
Charybdis hath no mercy and Scylla no remorse.
Lay your lips upon the Siren's offered kiss and inhale.
Cherish the eternal breath.
Do not stare too long!
Abandon the hope of found reflection!
Ware the invisible appearance of vanity.
Whilst thou gaze into the Seer's pool.
Too seek a vision's wisdom and risk blindness in the dark of prophecy undone.
Apollo is capricious in his whim and Delphi has no master.
Place your forehead upon the cold stone in obeisance.
Endure the lack of knowing.
Try not the Fates!
Grasp the length of life's thread!
Beware the freedom of will.
Beyond.

I enjoyed this poem very much. Your rhyme scheme was a bit on the contemporary side, but it made it enjoyable. You've a good hand at epic poems.

I don't bother with rhyme schemes they are province of old men who insist on teaching the 'rules' of creative writing. No that I don't appreciate a good rhyme but if I find free verse a better vehicle for my own need to express.

I agree. Free verse has become extremely popular, basically taking the writing community by storm. Most of my writings don't rhyme. One of my favorite writers, Eve Ensler who wrote The Vagina Monologues, has a tendency to free verse. (Even though most of her writings can be said to be drama, rather than poetic, which I totally disagree with) And yet, her work, mixed with her words, could put a master poet in their grave easily. No doubt about it. I also really love Jill Scott's works, which can be found in her most recent book, The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours.
