She's too damn skinny in either pic.
Amaru2005-06-22 19:30:10
Is she? I don't think so.
Manjanaia2005-06-22 19:32:39
I'd say she was fairly normal, leaning more towards skinny then fat.
Saikado2005-06-22 19:33:46
SHE looked healthy in the first picture, see I personally should exercise just for the fact that it would be easier on my heart to lose some of my chub.

I don't try to copy them, I'm well aware of the ideal weight. You seem unaware to the mental conditions related to eating disorders, which the media very much worsen.

I work for a medical insurance company. The only people that are -more- aware of that fact than I am are 1. The people themselves, and 2. Those with degrees.

Pwnt.

No, not pwnt, in fact that makes you worse. How can you be so insensitive to such things when you work with them?
Richter2005-06-22 19:50:03
Perhaps I'm just in a bad mood today.

Or maybe I'm nice to the callers, fix thier problems, and sympathize with them, but I realize that the amount of people that have a glandular obesity problem is SMALL.

Look it up.

This is going to be one of the most insensitive things I've ever said, and you can disregard it for those with medical problems, but if you're fat (or alternatively, really skinny), it's your own fault. Treat your body better.

Connecting this to the topic, sure, people can see those in the media who are whatever body type, but it is up to you to keep yourself healthy. If you're older than about, oh... 14 maybe? you can make your own informed decisions on what is healthy for you. If I was a girl, and saw someone incredibly skinny, I wouldn't want to be like her, I'd want to be healthy.

Or perhaps I'm giving the general populace too much credit, assuming they all have 1. willpower 2. Self-preservation instinct 3. A brain 4. Self esteem.
Manjanaia2005-06-22 19:52:58
I'm not talking about physical problems, I'm talking about the mental factors associated with eating disorders. Most cases of overweightness I agree, are the persons own fault. But there are mental problems linked to it. In underweightness, there are a lot of mental problems linked to it.
Saikado2005-06-22 19:54:33
1. Neutered by the US, 2. Neutered by the US, after all supposedly we're safe from all harm so long as we have our blessed government -busts up laughing-, 3. Having a brain we all do, USING IT is another story, 4. ...Well see some do, some don't
Richter2005-06-22 19:57:10
The mental disorders are derived from the fact the person is over/underweight. Eating too much, getting fat, and having subsequent mental disorders is like motorcross racing too dangerously, breaking your legs, and then having problems walking. It is a consequence of the symptom of the original problem.

Which is still your fault, sans the said disclaimers previously.
Unknown2005-06-22 20:01:22
And because it is their fault we should have no sympathy for them or try and rectify the situation? Pointing a finger does not a solution make.
Unknown2005-06-22 20:02:41
@Amaru. Yes I think she's still a little too skinny in the first pic but maybe that's just my personal preference.

In saying it was thier fault, I suppose I was thinking to myself that it is also within thier means to rectify the situation they have caused as well. *shrug*

And I do have sympathy. Sometimes. I see way too many people every day that just eat and eat and eat and eat and don't exercise.

For people like my grandmother, however, who walked miles every day at age 55+, and was still gaining weight, I have a good deal of it. Turns out she had hyperthyroidism/cancer. Which, wasn't her fault.

Message of the day: If you're overweight, go exercise, and put down that doughnut. Instead of coming home today to play Lusternia, I'm going to go do some yardwork, because *gasp* eating badly and sitting in a chair all day is making me fat.

I think society hasn't found a balance. Stick people are wierd-looking unhealthy, fat people are disgusting and unhealthy, and so apparently, the first alternative is better.

I'll admit though, I'd much rather date a stick than a fat person.

ALSO, if you look at the stars today, many of the women are healthy, "skinny" (because Americans are fat, so our standards are effed), and have killer abs.

Ohmygosh don't let our young women work out!

I work in a call center. I swear to god, 95% of the people here are obeese. Girls want to look up to stars for their body types? Awesome? Rolemodels? Bad choice.

That's wrong actually. I thought you knew what you were talking about?

have you guys SEEN lindsay lohan lately?

She is far FAR too skinny, id say she's bordeline anorexic, have you seen her arms? no thanks.

I prefered her in mean girls when she actually has curves and tits, I hate skinny girls who obsess about it, I prever my curves thank you
Gregori2005-06-23 01:11:26
Not that I think women or men who suffer the "I am to fat and ugly" syndrome when they look in the mirror is right, but this is a "problem" that has been around since forever. Media has just made it more "public".

Ancient Greece the beautiful people were the thin women and well muscled men. These people were admired and looked upon as role models.

However in Ancient Rome, the opposite was true, heavy women and men were the beautiful. Strangely enough though Rome was the "birthplace" of Bulimia. They would have huge feasts and gorge themselves only to vomit it all up on order to eat the next course.

Overall, people will always go through the "I need to look like so and so" in order to be beautiful. We all suffer a slight bit of it, some just suffer it worse than others and that is sad. I know many women who are probably 90 pounds soaking wet, yet still look in the mirror and say 'I am to fat."

Some of the comments in this thread condemning eating disorders and such are part of the damn problem. 'Oh gosh now, we don't like really skinny girls...we don't like fat girls either...or girls with fake tans...just real tans'.

How can people accept who they are if others won't do the same thing?

That post, like all the others you made in this thread, was pointless.

I don't like skinny girls, because you can't hug them right, and they're unhealthy.

I don't like fat girls, because they're gross. This one at the office today was wearing shorts and a tank top, and she was 250lbs+. Her shirt had gone halfway up her back while sitting in her chair, and I could see that even her back had rolls. Her skin was wrinkly. When you can hug a girl and you end up hugging layers of jelly doughnuts instead of tissue, muscle, and bone, that's gross. It's not healthy either.

I don't like girls with fake tans usually. This other girl at the office is Actually Orange. Unless you like umpa loompas, -that- discussion is closed.

And my girlfriend is kinda pasty. I don't care if she has a tan, she's amazing.

So, what do all those points have in common? They're personal opinion. Do you care what I look for in a girl? Do I care what you look for in a guy?

No.

Then why should people care what the media thinks?

The POINT of most of my arguments was that you need to get off your butt and keep yourself healthy. And until you're healthy, i.e. acceptably body weight in Both directions, you're funny looking.

If you can accept that, I don't have a problem with it.
