how about just do it by city and guild rank..

Because then the people who need credits most don't get any. People established enough to be higher ranked can probably afford market credits anyway.

I would expect Richter, of all people, to be in favor of capitalism and free market economies.

IRE became a unique success story in the world of text MUDs because it eschewed the age-old communistic theory running through the the MUDing community for a better model of capitalism. As far as they're concerned, the credit market ain't broke and it don't need fixin'.

And just as I tell floundering Lusternian shopkeepers over and over and over, if you find yourself running out of resources (be it time or commodities) to stock the shelves with, you're undervaluing your own merchandise.

The fair price of a credit is not the price you used to see when you started playing Lusternia, and it sure isn't the price you wish you were seeing for it. A credit is worth exactly what the market says it's worth.

If newbies get discouraged over that, it might be because everyone around them is voicing such negative opinions about the price of credits. After all, why would they think they should be able to buy credits at 1500 gold apiece when credits sell for 5000, unless someone who was around to actually see the lower prices was telling them they ought to feel gipped?
