I didn't say they lost I said they got their butt kicked which you can easily see from the trailers.

I would have seen this already if Tom Cruise wasn't in it. Oh lord I hate him, and he is such a bad actor.

I used to dislike Tom Cruise to an extent as well. He made many movies that had the similar plot lines: The character is a badass in whatever he does, then something dramatic happens, and the character redeems himself in the end. A lot of his movies after Top Gun were like this, and it got old quick.
But, he redeemed himself as an actor IMO after Last Samurai and Collateral. I think he did a great job in both of those roles.
Richter2005-07-01 16:39:31
Collateral was an -excellent- movie.
Unknown2005-07-01 16:43:09
Jamie Foxx made Collateral.
Richter2005-07-01 16:44:03
I think it was the two of them. Tom Cruise being so good in that movie made me have no reservations about going to see War of the Worlds.
Lisaera2005-07-01 16:50:04
I keep wavering between whether to watch the Last Samurai or not. I just know it is going to destroy all the culture and history of Japan in the face of horrific commercialism.
As for Collateral, I only watched it recently, but I really enjoyed it and I think Tom Cruise was excellent in it.

I can't say that their history and culture was dead on Lisaera, but it certainly didn't destroy it. The event/plot that makes the movie is entirely fictional, but the fact that rogue samurais that were against the new government existed is very true. The houses that they lived in, the cloth they wore, seemed to be pretty much on target. I know this because I'm half Japanese. I'd see it if I were you.
Asarnil2005-07-01 16:59:34
I read this on the Sci Fi channels website, but didn't remember to post it until now.
All I can say about that is Amen, brother. Read the book. The movie will pale in comparison.
Yeah, Tom Cruise SURE sucks, all he does is make crap movies. Collateral, Minority Report, Vanilla Sky, Jerry Maguire, Interview with the Vampire, The Firm, A Few Good Men, Far and Away, Born on the 4th, Color of Money, Legend, All the Right Moves and, the one that started it all, Risky Business were just completely crap.
IMHO he is nearly always good.
Oh and I left out Top Gun and Eyes Wide Shut - Top Gun's only saving grace is listening to "Danger Zone", and before seeing Eyes Wide Shut I never thought a movie with that many boobies could be completely and utterly boring.

Ellison Blasts Spielberg's War
Harlan Ellison questioned why director Steven Spielberg didn't give more credit to fellow author H.G. Wells in his upcoming film adaptation of The War of the Worlds. Speaking to SCI FI Wire at Enigma Con at the University of California, Los Angeles, Ellison said: "What annoys me is that Spielberg is such an egomaniac these days that it has to be 'Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds. No, you puss-bag. It's H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, and it wouldn't kill you to put his name on it."
Ellison, author of such books as I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, added: "That shows his arrogance. It's like Disney. Disney didn't write Snow White or Robin Hood or Bambi, but it's 'Walt Disney's universe.' It's the universe according to frozen Walt."
Ellison hosted a 90-minute panel at the conference, which he titled "How Does SF Stay in Business in a World of Marching Morons?" "Spielberg is only a craftsman, that's all he is," Ellison said. "He's not a genius. He's not a trendsetter. There isn't one moment of any Spielberg film ... that matches the least moment of a Kurosawa film. Kurosawa was a blinding genius of cinema. His vision was astonishing."
Ellison said that he has little interest in seeing remakes and added: "We live in a society that values less and less the original."

You're just trying to be like me. *smirk*
So, has anyone -seen- this movie, that has a good/bad review?
Lisaera2005-07-01 18:07:58
Perhaps I shall watch it then.
As for Interview with the Vampire... I didn't think the film was that bad, but it certainly didn't do Anne Rice's writing justice. Queen of the Damned was much worse, probably because it didn't have Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas to bring a great tone to it.
Back on-topic, those who have seen War of the Worlds have told me it's good, and I'm considering going to see it tomorrow.

I'm going to see it this weekend. I've heard reviews along the lines of "It made no sense at all, wtf?" as well as "This movie was excellent, wow!"
On The Last Samurai and the "badass -> redemption" role, I would say that also fits the Tom Cruise stereotype role, though the movie as a whole was excellent.

I saw it yesterday... I thought it was really, really good. I'll prolly see it again before it leaves the theatre.

I would just like to rebut to the article and with your sentement. If the movie was the book and didn't have changes done to it then he probably would have put H.G Well's name on it, however, he made changes so its not really the same story anymore, just like with Disney.
Asarnil2005-07-01 20:28:58
It is still Well's story, just because he put a few different spins on things, doesn't mean it isn't his story. Taking someone elses book, changing some stuff in it, while leaving others the same doesn't mean I wrote the book and can sell it like that - it is still their work and should be credited for it.
Unknown2005-07-01 23:42:57
Has anyone seen H.G. WELLS' WAR OF THE WORLDS ? It's new, 2005, but it's STV (Straight To Video) apparently, low budget too.
Opinions on IMDB are conflicting. Very low rating (only few dozens of votes though), but comment with which most people agreed rates it 10.

Anne Rice is a goddess if the dark romantic style is one you are drawn to.

We have news in a America? oooooooohhhhhh you mean the Real World spin-off called CNN, or the TBN subsidiary called Fox News....
On topic,
I'd say it was a B-, definatly worth seeing but it ain't winning any oscars anytime this century. Entertainment, but not art.

I have to say, the movie was pretty good, right up until the stupid deus ex machina ending. And here I was, all excited to see how the humans dig themselves out of their hole...
Only to find out that they don't have to.
Bah! Bah, I say!
