Murphy gave me an idea in another thread. He mentioned that if someone insulted him in real life that he would bust them over the head blah blah blah macho man stuff, but anyway. I was thinking. Not all conflicts have to end in PK. I was thinking of a system where you could still kick someone's butt, but more to teach them a lessons. It could work a bit like DECLARE.
BEATDOWN
To teach your target a lesson you find the need to beat your target within an inch of their life. Effectively beating down your target will incapacitate them so much that they will not be able to harm another player/denizen for an They will also find their beatdown so humiliating that they will be humbled and unable to speak for
EDIT: So I was thinking you would have to type BEATDOWN TARGET before the figting took place, like you would when you declare someone and that in the end it could peace and keep them from shouting, talking, yelling, until they either died or their time ran out.
EDIT: Bah stupid I forgot to add that fighting would take place as normal, but when the BEATDOWN TARGET's Health got down to 0 this would happen instead of death.

haha that would be funny.

This is an -awesome- idea, but it would need some tweaking. Make it a moderately high skill in... something. More bar fights in my inn!
Unknown2005-06-30 22:25:14
Seems like it could be used to put a player out of fight for a long time, for example during village influencing. You'd just do beatdown and peace them instead of killing where they'd be able to come back after few minutes.
Ialie2005-06-30 22:27:05
Simple. Make it so that you are unable to BEATDOWN someone while you are in enemy territory, and in a village during influence time.
Unknown2005-06-30 22:42:57
Simple indeed, but... I know you propose it as a way to resolve personal issues like insults but I have a suspicion it would be used as a tactic to put major players out of the way. Before making a move, be it raid or quest or anything. Being able to peace someone so easily...
But maybe it's just my paranoia kicking in, or I'm just looking for a hole.

Make it only useable in taverns.

Make it so that you can only use BEATDOWN Once per month, and make it so that the effects will only last one IG day.
Shamarah2005-06-30 22:53:38
That's an amusing idea, but it shouldn't last more than a few minutes or it'll be too easily abusable.
Ialie2005-06-30 23:15:41
Also.. How awesome would it be to see.
Annabelle has been beat down by Rhysus.

Idea: The pacification only lasts a minute or two, but the not-speaking lasts for longer (10 minutes?)

Only problem with your "loop hole" is that you have to be able to kill the person first, if its someone worth using beatdown on to take them out for a while, then its going to be someone who has chance of killing you, so it wouldn't really be affective...
I see this mostly used on Noobs and other allies who your afraid of killing on accident.

It's probably a similar mentality to real life: if you have taken out a target, but havn't killed them, they could come to and take you out with a quick knife stroke. Remember that this world is in a state of war.
Thus this would mostly be used either to spar with, to play around with (big guy KNOCKSOUT a little guy in one blow) or to teach someone a lesson without killing them. Overall, a mostly RPish technique, which makes it a good thing.
Perhaps something to add to that, though definatly something to add MUCH later: If the enemy has been 'knocked out', the victor has the option to KNOCKDOWN the target, knocking them out cold for the amount of time it takes to recover from Praying after death (though they don't actualy pray and don't lose exp).
I can just see someone knocking out a guy, then they run around going "You loser! That wasn't a fair fight! You get back here!" Then the victor delivers a punch that puts out their lights. I can also see it being used to kidnap others (drag the fallen person away). Make it useable on NPCs and you could have raids to kidnap important villagers as a quest, or perhaps attempts to drag the guildmater away from another guild (non-permanent, but would somehow benifit the kidnappers).
Would also mean Glom could knockout the fae instead of killing them, if that's their desire.

This is stupid, I can make you feel low and petty without the game mechanics doing it for me. Let us not have the game make up for those with a horrible vocabulary, or who are generally just stupid and wrong.

Meh what a downer.

I think it's a good idea. In order for it not to be abused, maybe if more than one person attacks the beatdownee then it's not a beatdown but a regular kill. That would make it less common in bigger battles with more people involved and keep it to a more RP thing.
Shiri2005-07-01 07:03:38
And you can't really "beatdown" with cosmicfire/staves/chasms/cudgels/toadcurses/moonbursts/whatever, and the only way you could do it with weapons is by holding back, which would reduce your damage, and so on. It's not very realistic. Is it really worth it, anyway?
Murphy2005-07-01 07:09:21
she's basically saying, instead of declare shiri, it would be beatdown shiri.
It would be a fight for all intents and purposes, but the loser would have the affects of being beatendown, rather than die when they get to 0 health

Shiri2005-07-01 07:11:37
I know how it would function, but if I turn you into a toad, stomp on you, shatter your spine and so on, and you...get what's basically a shattered ego and then some? :/ And is it really necessary?
Shryke2005-07-01 07:28:05
but the thing is they basically incapacitate you shiri, so instead of stomping you, at the last moment, they flick you in the nose with their finger... that'll shutem up... All you would have to do to solve that problem would be to make a couple new kill messages, that are beatdown messages, like "Just as you would deliver the final blow, you tackle who is in no condition to fight on.."
