I don't expect people to read every little detail of everything all the time, but I've run into gr1s who were TOLD not to bother reading news, and it makes me want to hit someone.

Who told them that?

Someone who wouldn't be around for much longer if he knew who they were, probably.

I like both of the ideas. Announcements one, and new posts notice one. It could even work like that every time there's a new post that you can read, you'd get a system notice. And, of course, when you log in, number of new available posts, just like it was mentioned.
And about announcements... I understand there would be just one announce at a time, which certain guild authorities could alter?
EDIT: Like topics on IRC channels?

Yeah, thats how I'd think it would work.. one announcement at a time, nad one novice announcement for when people first join the guild.
The news posts thing is good, except for new players... I'd just love to start the game and see, you have 2365 unread news posts.

News should default to read when you first gain access to a board. It's annoying to start at 0.

I really like this idea.. I think we should have it for every important channel like ct, gt, gnt, ect.. I've been announcing the Tournament that I've mentioned in posts twice now and people STILL don't know what the hell I'm talking about...and it's getting really annoying to hear "What Tournament? I didn't know about it.." everytime I ask about it on ct when I posted about it TWICE and the subject of the posts was about the tournament..

This is a good idea, but isn't likely to get thrown in. Make a GHELP ANNOUNCEMENTS, and have people check it from time to time.

Aquamancers tried that, didn't work. I like the proposed idea though. It'd probably be toggle-able though, and how many people would turn it off?
Sylphas2005-07-08 05:45:35
GHELPS would be of less use than news, since to announce a change, you'd have to use news anyway. And if someone doesn't check news at all, they're definitely not keeping up to date on ghelp changes.

I think the system is fairly fine as it is. Most of the problems being mentioned are just because of laziness.
Unknown2005-07-08 06:30:27
Well, if I log in for two hours I don't run home every 15 minutes to check the news...
Sylphas2005-07-08 06:33:43
NSTAT, RN. If you have so much news to read that you require a newsroom, I'd say your part of the problem.
Unknown2005-07-08 06:40:58
Even READNEWS PUBLIC 1 works. The only thing you need a newsroom for is to post something.
Ixion2005-07-08 06:41:45
I like the idea Daganev. You can lead a horse to water but you cant make them read logs/posts in a timely fashion.
For the Ur'Guard, the guild tutor Captain Avarath is labeled as GR13, and directly in the chain of command of the guild leaders. There's tons of things we could do and RP with some form of announcements via the tutor.

I like the idea, too. I read the news very often (I have this cycle of things I randomly do when I'm not doing anything... stat sc gwho nstat gwho readlog ) and I STILL manage to forget about things like contests, gold fundraisers...
As long as I don't get hit by the information all the time (just when returning to Prime and upon logging in, which I think is reasonable), I'd find it very useful.

Someone sent me a message about town criers but didn't explain much about it, anyone know what I'm talking about?

In Aetolia, Ashtan either has or had a town crier. He yelled about some of the more important things that the city was running. I always thought it was rather good.
Unknown2005-07-11 17:09:57
Why not put in town criers, like Hashan has - have their Nexus Guardian yell something every half hour or so (twice an IC day), when it's dusk and when it's dawn. Then have your guild tutor give a reminder over gnt, and have another setable one for GT? Perhaps even have them mention it when greeted, etc, things like that.
Put them to some form of use!

Err, to clarify. It's a mob that YELLs stuff every now and then. They did get quite annoying, the one in Hashan got broken once and yelled stuff every couple seconds at one point. After that, I just #gagged it.
