Log: The Ritual of the Tides

by Shamarah

Back to Common Grounds.

Shamarah2005-07-09 02:18:53
This is a ritual scripted by me and Wuylinfe that we put on for the city. I think it came out pretty well and figured some of you might enjoy reading the log.

This is, obviously, all from my perspective, with the channels, prompts, and other spam edited out. I did all the talky-stuff, and Wuylinfe did all the illusions (since he's trans).

The Great Starry Sea.
The ocean stretches out from horizon to horizon, endlessly and forever. Its
waters are deep dark blue, and contain within it motes of tiny stars that
twinkle and sparkle in the great waves. The sky is a panorama of clouds
coloured in rich hues of varying luminescent pigments that move and bleed into
each other. Though there is no sun, the light from the glowing sea itself and
the luminous clouds overhead create an effulgent brightness. There are 2 golden
dragon turtles here. Searching frantically, a golden dragon turtle swims in the
water here. Vesteran Mistress, Joli Glacielle, Thalassic Lodestar is here,
shrouded. Veradin Apostle Kelly McCloud, Knight of the Dove is here. She wields
an exquisitely crafted draconic broadsword in her left hand and a steel
broadsword in her right. Wuylinfe, the Pearl Bearer is here. He wields a coral
staff in his left hand and a shield bordered in moonstones in his right.
Akashic Aspirant Rhysus Saros is here, shrouded. He wields a coral staff in his
left hand and a glowing powerstone in his right. Aqua Applicant Arenananth is
here. Gentle Adrianna, Magistrate of Mercy is here. Squire Steffan, of the
Armies of Light is here, shrouded. He wields a exquisitely crafted draconic
broadsword in each hand. Aqua Initiate Nyanco is riding on a golden dragon
turtle. He wields a glittering seraphic tower shield in his left hand and a
coral staff in his right. Grand Apostle Andala McCloud, Marshal of the Dove is
here. She wields a exquisitely crafted draconic broadsword in each hand. Sir
Gero, Disciple of the Dawn is here. He wields a tae'dae bearclaw flail in each
hand. Chef Arix, Aerial Illusionist is here. He wields a grilled tiger shark
sandwich in his left hand and a dolphin bubble wand in his right.
You see exits leading north, southeast, and southwest.

You have emoted: Shamarah clears his throat.

You say, "Welcome, all, to the Ritual of the Tides."

You say, "The purpose of this Aquamantic ritual is simple: to honor and pay
tribute to the Lords of Tide, the Plane of Water, and the element of Water
itself."

You say, "We first honor the Lords of Tide, and begin by discussing their
history. When the Undead Emperor Ladantine began to use his knowledge of
Dreamweaving to gain sway over the realms, the ghost of Empress Sinenth of Old
Celest sent dreams out into the minds of Aquamancers, asking them to find the
pages of her dream journal. Through great effort, the five pages were recovered
and given to her, and the Song of Opening was written on the bottom of the
pages in arcane symbols, which she translated and read. The Song was sung at
the Pool of Stars, and the realm of the Lords of Tide was opened."

Three dragon turtles enter from the north, southwest, and southeast, each
carrying an illuminated candle on its back that flickers with an azure flame.

The dragon turtles form three corners of a triangle, and from the center a
thin, nearly transparent disc of water rises up from the Starry Sea. Slowly,
the image of the pearl and shell-lined halls and thrones of Lords of Tides
appear within the disc.

You say, "The passage was eventually found; its opening sits directly beneath
us in this very room as we stand above it so that the Lords of Tide may hear us
and know that we honor them."

You say, "We honor first Kintyre, Lady of the Rip Tide, whom the Aquamancers
initially made contact with."

An image of Lady Kintyre appears in the disc of water, seething white water
surging across her liquid body.

You say, "The Rip Tide is a current that occurs when water is pulled between
two sandbars, creating a fast-pulling, irresistible current which drags the
unlucky swimmer within its wrath and far out to sea. It is only fitting that we
honor her with our Aquamantic currents."

You say, "For the Lady of the Rip Tide!"

A large, glistening raindrop falls from the sky, and before hitting the surface
it implodes into a sinuous, jittering mote that hovers above the sea, causing
the surrounding waters to shift and swirl.

You reach out to your melded water and make beckoning gestures with your hands.

You say, "We next honor Murlough, Lord of the Red Tide."

An image of Lord Murlough appears in the disc of water, crimson waters rippling
across his aquatic form.

You say, "The Red Tide is a condition caused by the buildup of red algae on the
surface of the sea. A portion of the red tide is poisonous, and in this way can
the tiny, humble algae kill the unwary. We honor him with our jellyfish, who
are small creatures like the algae yet who can stun even the mightiest of
enemies."

You say, "For the Lord of the Red Tide!"

A large, glistening raindrop falls from the sky, and before hitting the surface
it bursts and unleashes a gleaming, crimson mote that hovers above the sea,
casting a red shadow over the waters.

You reach out to your melded water and crouch down, splashing in the water and
clucking your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
Tiny jellyfish form in the water, swimming around you like tiny underwater
flies.

You say, "We next honor Loch, Lord of the Low Tide."

An image of Lord Loch appears in the disc of water, impenetrable dark waters
churning within him.

You say, "The Low Tide is the time when the sea recedes into itself, making few
small waves and being peaceful and at ease. It is this tide that allows
vivacity in the small tidal pools that dot the sand, which teem with an
overflow of life. We honor him, therefore, with the Sweetfount, which nourishes
and heals all life of ailment."

You say, "For the Lord of the Low Tide!"

A large, glistening raindrop falls from the sky, and before hitting the surface
it splits and reveals a humming, twinkling mote that hovers above the sea,
lighting and calming the waters around it.

You reach out to your melded water and dance in a circle, creating a froth in
the water.
The water foams and glows with a soft white light.

You say, "We last honor Skerriagh, Lord of the High Tide."

An image of Lord Skerriagh appears in the disc of water, the pure crystalline
waters that form his body undulating constantly.

You say, "The High Tide is the wrath of the sea. It is the time when the ocean
surges, the water seethes, the currents roil, and the waves roar, rising high
into the air and crashing down on all below them. It is only fitting, then,
that we honor him by summoning the Tsunami, the greatest of all waves."

You say, "For the Lord of the High Tide!"

A large, glistening raindrop falls from the sky, and before hitting the surface
it crystallizes and then ruptures into a flaring, pulsating mote that hovers
above the sea, whipping up the waters and causing them to froth.

You reach out to your melded water with outstretched hands and create the
motion of severe waves in the air.
The sky darkens as high waves swell and begin to form crests.

You say, "The Lords of Tide are not separate entities, but instead are all
bound and unified to the quintessence of water, each one representing only one
of its many aspects. The magnificent Maelstrom, resplendent yet deadly, vast
yet swift, exemplifies the duality of water, its ability to be both healer and
destroyer, friend and foe. Behold, the silence before the storm."

The four motes slowly and silently sink into the darkening depths of the starry
sea, leaving no trace behind them. The waters become eerily still.

You lift up your coral staff with both hands and snap it in twain. An eruption
of glowing sapphire liquid bursts forth from the broken ends of the staff.
The sky glows with glowing sapphire clouds that release a powerful rain that
pounds down upon you in heavy sheets.

Towering waves roll across the waters, reaching to impossible heights and
forming watery figures of monstrous sea creatures.

The waters begin to bubble violently.

An immense and shining mote erupts from the depths of the sea like a miniature
comet, penetrating the disc of water as it rushes and roars into the clouds.

The watery disc shudders briefly before suddenly shattering apart, sending
droplets of water flying in all directions as its aquatic essence plunges back
into the sea.

A light mist sweeps up from the surface of the sea, freshening the air and
coating you in a thin layer of cool, vitalizing water.

You say, "As an offering and out of honor to the Lords of Tide, we drop a
single pearl into the depths of the Great Starry Sea, so that it may float down
and drift into the home of the Lords of Tide as their humble offering. This
pearl is no ordinary pearl, however; it has been dipped into the blessed waters
of the Pool of Stars itself, engulfing it with the power and labor of our very
own citizens."

You say, "Bearer, please cast the pearl into the Sea at this time."

Wuylinfe, the Pearl Bearer raises the pearl high above his head, and a
sparkling shaft of light descends from above to coat the pearl in a luminescent
glow.

Wuylinfe, the Pearl Bearer allows the pearl to gently roll off of his fingers
as it gradually floats down into the waters, the beam of light still trailing
it and at the same time growing narrower and dimmer as the pearl is submerged.

You have emoted: Shamarah pauses until the pearl has vanished from sight
completely.

You say, "We now come to the second part of our ceremony: the honoring of the
Elemental Plane of Water. As anyone who has explored it knows, there are three
parts to the Water Plane."

You say, "The first section is the Mystic River and Mystic Falls. The River is
an endlessly flowing body of water, and the water flows through the cosmos on
an unshakable course. Eventually, it reaches the Mystic Falls, where it empties
down off its edge in a massive torrent of water. We represent the River and
Falls, therefore, with a deluge of water crashing down from above."

You reach out to your melded water and dramatically raise your hands above your
head, clawing at the sky.
Violent thunderclouds form above and release a tremendous deluge of rain,
causing a spectacular rise in the waters here.

You say, "The next section, the middle section, is the Lake of Dreams. It is
here that the dream leeches infest, making their home and feeding off of the
dreams stored in the Lake. It is here, it seems, that the power of Dreamweaving
is the most strong; and so we represent the Lake by casting the mist of
dreams."

A bank of cloudy mist spreads across the ground beneath you.

You say, "The final section is the Great Starry Sea, where we now stand. Stars
twinkle in its eternal depths, and the starsuckers suck power out of the
glimmering waters. To represent its nature and its appearance, we cast the
shimmering, flawless healspring."

You reach out to your melded water and your hands glide in a sinuous dance
through the air.
The water here sparkles with a soft, scintillating glow.

You have emoted: Shamarah pauses and bows his head reverently.

You say, "And so we finally come to the last part of our ceremony; the tribute
to Water itself."

You say, "What is water? Water is everywhere. Without water, everything would
die, and no life could exist. Without water, there would be no cleanliness, and
all would be forever soiled, of body and spirit. Without water, the sea's
glimmering reflection would be lost, there would be no shimmering of raindrops
as they descend from above, no sparkle of water spray as a wet animal shakes
itself. Water, then, is life, purity, and beauty. There is no denying or
forsaking water any more than there is forsaking life and reality itself. So
let us offer a tribute - a tribute to water, in all of its forms."

You say, "To fog!"

Gently coaxing moisture into the air, you cause fog to creep in and blanket
your surroundings.

You say, "To rain!"

You reach out to your melded water, then slowly raise your hands in the air and
then dramatically lower them.
Dark clouds rumble overhead, suddenly releasing a hard downpour of large, hot
raindrops.

You say, "To hail!"

You raise your hands and dark blue clouds form overhead. Lightning crackles
above and the clouds release an onslaught of cold, icy hail stones that are the
size of your fist.

You say, "To storm!"

You reach out to your melded water with outstretched hands and create the
motion of severe waves in the air.
Mighty winds sweep sheets of water into the sky.

You say, "To ice!"

You reach out to your melded water and blow on your palms, then hold them over
the water here.
Crystals of ice begin to form on the surface of the water, coalescing into
slushy sheets of ice that turn the water frigid.

You say, "To steam!"

You have emoted: Shamarah fires a jet of steam from his staff high into the
air.

You yell, "To water!"

You stand tall and arc your back, becoming one with the element of water. Your
flesh shimmers and roils, and your body transmutes into a liquid form.

The waters in the room begin to swirl and rise into the air. Motes, ice, fog,
and wind surround you in an astonishing spectacle as they whirl rapidly but
still remain out of harm's way. For a moment, the waters encompass the room
entirely and all you are able to see is a bluish blur, while in the distance
the sound of washing waves, rolling tides, rushing rivers and crackling storms
can be heard. The waters spin faster and faster, threatening to come crashing
down. You close your eyes and complete silence suddenly overtakes the room. An
airy, gentle breeze wisps across your cheek, and when you open your eyes again,
the waters are as still and quiet as before.

Your body turns solid as your watery form morphs into flesh.

You say, "Thank you for coming to the Ritual of the Tides. The Waters be with
you all."

Awesome Shamarah. Good work putting that together. Geo's been trying to concoct something like that for quite some time now but other issues became priority. Hopefully we'll be able to do one at one time or another. biggrin.gif

Boring...
(I'm kidding, it's cool, must've taken a lot of effort to prepare it)
But you know, the last part reminds me of Captain Planet a bit. wink.gif
Unknown2005-07-09 02:45:51
Muhahaha the Moondancers have had rituals like this for ages tongue.gif. You guys suck!

But meh, heh. Na it was cool.
Shiri2005-07-09 02:46:13
Good to see the Aquamancers use those Tide Lords to do something. The mages were kind of messed up for given RP before that.

(As for the ASCII thing, try surrounding it in " " things. Without the dots. Like so.

That was a good read, had sense of style. I never thought of incorporating the Demesne abilities into a ritual though, very interesting. Only thing I didn't get was how did you blast steam out of your staff at the end since you snapped it in half earlier... *cough* Other than that, great job!
Nokraenom2005-07-09 06:35:04
Looked good, but does anyone else find it funny that the Lord of the Red Tide is named Merlough?

Methinks the Elder Gods had a few too many glasses of wine that night. biggrin.gif
Torak2005-07-09 11:50:48
Cool!
Lisaera2005-07-09 12:27:38
Very nice. I love it when players do things like this.
Shamarah2005-07-09 12:33:08
Thanks for the comments, everyone!

And thanks, Shiri, that worked.

And yes, I know. Right after I did that emote I was like, oh crap I forgot to summon it again... oh well, hopefully no one will notice.

You forgot to include the pre-requisite pearl dipping part smile.gif
Shamarah2005-07-09 16:32:23
Yeah, I forgot to log that bit.
Nyanco2005-07-11 01:04:18
Thanks a lot Shamarah and Wuylinfe; it was really a good event. smile.gif
Btw here is the pearl dipping part before the ritual:

The Pool of Stars.
This location is flooded with shallow, crystal clear water. An enormously wide
circular pool, as dark as the night sky, glitters softly between the columns.
His form suffused with soft light, the Keeper of the Pool of Stars stands here
attentively. A statue of Isune stands here, memorializing Her noble spirit. A
sigil in the shape of a small, rectangular monolith is on the ground. An
obsidian eye sigil is here. There are 2 white marble gravestones here. A pretty
bunch of yellow freesias is here. A dragon turtle rests here, an air of majesty
on its features. Searching frantically, a golden dragon turtle swims in the
water here. A baby rat timidly moves in the shadows here. Aqua Applicant
Arenananth is here. Gentle Adrianna, Magistrate of Mercy is here. Chef Arix,
Aerial Illusionist is here. He wields a grilled tiger shark sandwich in his
left hand and a dolphin bubble wand in his right. Admiral Shamarah is here. He
wields the Pearl Staff of Rushing Water in his left hand and a tower shield in
his right.
You see exits leading north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest,
west, northwest, and up (open door).

Admiral Shamarah, Channeler of the Tides says to Wuylinfe, "Proceed with the
Pearl."

Wuylinfe, the Pearl Bearer holds the pearl over the Pool of Stars, and tendrils
of water reach up to embrace it.

As the pearl slowly sinks into the Pool of Stars, the waters illuminate with a
dazzling flare.

Moments later, the pearl resurfaces from the sparkling depths, shining
brilliantly.

Wuylinfe, the Pearl Bearer picks up the pearl again, elbows bent so the pearl
sits steadily in his palms.

Shamarah nods his head emphatically.

Admiral Shamarah, Channeler of the Tides says, "Good."

Admiral Shamarah, Channeler of the Tides says, "We will now proceed to Water
and begin."

I'm quite happy to see this! Who ever said that Aquamancers cannot role-play? At least there's something coming from Celest - and I doubt any can call this against your role.

Beyond that, the ritual itself was entertaining, as well!
