A virtually unlimited supply of currency will do that to a market.
Galatae2005-07-10 23:03:32
I know. I'm terrible with managing money, but never before in any IRE game I've played had I had more than 50K gold just... sitting there, like I do with Josun. I'm too selfish to spend them on 7K credits, though.
Vix2005-07-10 23:06:26
Something seriously needs to be done about Astral. Even Achaea's fishing never did that... (but then again, Achaea has more people who buy credits from IRE)
Galatae2005-07-10 23:09:38
Agreed, Vix. Not all of us are big enough to hop up there... I'm still doing comm quests, myself.
Or... we could use that gold sink everyone's been asking for to balance out the sudden need for credits, with these new skillsets... I just don't know what would make a good one.

Unknown2005-07-10 23:10:06
You're right, something does need to be done. A simple 'gold sink' won't work, in my opinion. Something about the mechanics producing all this gold and inflating the market at such a fast pace needs to be changed.
Cwin2005-07-10 23:10:21
While things might've changed, the biggest method I knew to gain gold in Achaea was Cyrene's lighting bug quest for 2k an hour. I'm pretty sure there are others but those are hard to find and usualy requiring you to deal with quest campers.
Lusternia, within one month of being here I performed Stewartsville's Murder quest, earning 5000. Doing WEEVILS can get me 500 gold within 15 minutes if I actualy kill the things while passing Seren. Then there's the hordes of gobs of quests that give around 100 gold that can be done endlessly, the Gorgog quest that someone camped for about 8 hours to earn 250k and, for the bashers, Astral once you can finaly get up there.
In any other IRE game, I had to struggle as a level 60 to get enough money for the 2-4k. Here, I already have 16k worth of armor on me, 14k in the bank, can already perform Alchemy and know where I can get the herbs for it.
Not to say that Credit prices aren't too high, but we definatly can't compare Lusternia with any other game.

... Especially when we're at the point of surpassing Achaea's credits.

This game has been out for like, less than a year and already we're like this.
Galatae2005-07-10 23:19:50
Why can't we do that undercutting thing we love to do in our tradeskills with these credits?
You can find herbs as cheap as 4 gp per, if you know who to go to or if you're looking for weed or arnica (which never seem to sell) from me on a good day. We need more people to buy more credits and push the prices down...
Oh, credits for 7k? I should go down to 6k! And so on... bah. Rambling.

Heh.
I would be intrested to hear an admin perspective on this.

Wasn't bahing at you, I swear! Was bahing at how out of place my post looked after Cwin's, when it was meant to look spiffy after yours...

Perhaps the REAL problem is in the fact that the majority of gold is earned where only a few people can access, the Astral. As such you end up with a few people who can buy God every day and 99% who are earning some (like the example of myself) but not NEAR as much.
So:
Either drop Astral a bit so that it's not THAT much better than the Honors quests or
offer more quest/influence options that can compete with Astral.
The idea, along with moneysinks and others, would be to even out the rich/poor situation by giving more ways to earn the maximum amount of money (whatever max it would be.. 100k, 10k, 1 gold a day). That way, when the credit market balances you don't have 10 people that can buy and everyone else who find it overpriced (or the opposite, the majority who find it reasonable and 10 people that can buy EVERYTHING at once).

Mmhm. We definently need something like Manses Round Two. Deflate the economy!
Unknown2005-07-10 23:40:31
A moneysink wouldn't work unless it was a continues expensive supply of a commodity that people feel they almost can't survive without, such as being able to purchase lessons. We all know that that isn't viable because it would hurt the real world side of this game.
Shikari2005-07-10 23:59:26
What you're seeing is simply the market equilibrium for the credits made available to the general public. If these are the cheapest credits you can find, I strongly suggest you make the case to your guild to start selling the credits they have received through member purchases at a heavily reduced rate.
Unknown2005-07-11 00:05:26
You guys saying soemthign needs to be done about astral, but thats like our Underworld which i was talkign to some who make a killign down there pulling way more gold an hour then in astral. I think it's just because we still do not have a huge amount of people yet is why the market is like this give it time and as we get more people we will have prices drop. or thats my thoughts.
Unknown2005-07-11 00:07:02
I think Purchasing lessons would work in a couple of scenarios...
Minimum lesson price is 1000 gold. (so they're a little cheaper than the current credit market) Every time someone buys a lesson the price increases by 2 gold. Once an RL hour the price decreases by 10 gold. (Or some such formula.) That limits the amount of lessons that can be purchased a day without inflating the lesson price. With that formula 120 lessons can go out a day. If more than that are purchased then the price increases unil enough gold doesn't exist in the game to buy more than 120 lessons a day. (Or it could be a bigger or a smaller number of lessons a day)
Difference between this and the credit market is gold is just being removed entirely from the system. But it would still take a nice 1.8 million gold to trans a skill, so most of the poeple buying credits aren't going to quit buying credits. Or at least most of the people to who 1.8 is not a prohibitively enourmous amount of gold have already bought a great deal of credits.
Or the number of lessons that can be purchased in a day could be limited. Make it 15 per character, or something like that. It'd take 4 months of buying max lessons every day, to trans a skill, so buying credits would still be a quicker alternative.
OR
Have Trader bob open up a herb shop selling herbs at 20 to 25 gp each. When there are just no friendly herbalists around or when someone has so much gold that it has lost all meaning to them they'll just buy from Bob rather than try to track down a herbalist. That might take some gold out of the system, but PC herbalists could easily undercut that and continue to use their skill to turn a profit.
Also, get Rowena Nightshade to stop offering alchemy services and get an NPC somewhere more neutral to do it.The prices should be high, again, like 500gp for health, maybe a little less for mana, so that alchemists don't get forced out of business by the NPC. I think most players that have a lot of money just sitting around not doing any good would rather pay 500 or 600 gold and get a health refill now than wait two days and pay 220 gold. 'Cause hell that wait is annoying. I'm not even wealthy and it seems reasonable to me.
Other than that... Make cities and communes more expensive to run? Have a mob that sells experience? Actually, that last idea, as abhorrent as it might seem, would give someone with a few hundred thousand gold they're not using sitting around something to do with it.

It keeps going up and up and up, so I don't think we've reached a point we could call equilibrium. I thought we had when credits hovered around 5500, until they jumped again.
My guild already does sell at a reduced rate but we either don't get enough to keep the sale going or the person who controls it is squandering the credits, which I highly doubt.

I don't follow. As we get more people, credits will in theory continue to rise as there are more people who DON'T buy OOC credits than who DO.
