Edit: ooers.. it looks.. so sketchy on here >_<

I'd like to see a full-body drawing! I think you'ld do a fairly decent one. smile.gif But the sketchiness is a bit of a turn off, although it does look, at least to me, like what I've envisioned him as (Although, he looks like an effeminate version of Link!)

blink.gif How can you not like Kidaen?

Ah, yeah. My scanner sucks..and it was either post the sketchy one or have little black dots all OVER THE PLACE. I'm trying to fix the dots..but it makes me ill..because I have to go through and erase all of them.. I know what pose I want to draw the full body in, but I need to see His pants first..and I don't know if He's going to let me borrow those. sleep.gif Someone buy me a tablet.

You can borrow mine? And, if you get ahold of His pants, let me know. I'll write a song about them!

Hee. I want to rant, so I think I will for a minute.. It took me around 15 minutes to draw this pic, but if I take out the time and spend the needed 2-3 hours making a full body pic actually decent lookin' it will still look worse then what people draw on a tablet for 30 minutes.. and that seriously pisses me off..

but yes, if I get Him out of His pants you can write a song about it. wink.gif

You're hoping He'll take them off in front of you, aren't you? closedeyes.gif

I'm going to be nice and not post what you said in-game, but Kidaen better watch His pants. Just a friendly warning.

About the drawing: this has pretty good porportions, but I must ask--what sort of system do you use to measure out the features? The way that I was taught, although all people are different, is that guidelines work the best. For example, there should be a line straight up the middle of the face, then one perpendicular to that exactly halfway down the face. This draws a line through the middle of the eyeline, but for different characters should be adjusted appropriately (for elves, who are typically depicted as having almond/upward slanted eyes, the line should be slightly higher). The next line should be just above the eyeline, which forms the brow. Then, make one halfway between the eyeline and the chin; this makes the bottom of the nose (but should be adjusted according to the character). Next, draw a line halfway between the noseline and the chin, which will serve as the middle of the lips (where the top meets the bottom lip). On all humanoids the chin typically makes a triangular shape from the middleline to the edges of the chin from the front (is is because of the bone that lay underneath). For males the chin is broader and the jawbone is more square. Those are two things you can do to make this pic more masculine. Now, there are only three more lines to draw. At the point where the midline and the eyeline intersect make a upward curving line equal to one eye's width (it should connect from one point on the eyeline to another, and be adjusted to how far appart the eyes are, but remember that the eyes should be aa wide apart as they are wide). At this point move over from both sides of this curvature to what would be the outer edge of each eye, keeping in mind the previous rule, and draw a hashmark. Then, halfway between this point and the edge of the curvature make a line down the face, starting at the brow and stopping at the lip which measures the midline of the lips. There should be a square now on the face itself. Just a few more pointers, and I'm through! The ear should connect to the head at the place where the eyeline is drawn (this works for humans, and should be adjusted appropriately for other races, but also works for profiles, from the front, and 3/4 views, but you should keep in mind to curve the eyeline when the head is tilted forward or back). The top of the ear should be about equal to the browline, and the bottom about flush with the top of the upper lip. The the last thing is that you might consider making the indentation by the eye (in your picture) more pronounced, rather than flat like it is now. This would make it more masculine, but notice that males and females have different shaped features. In men the shape of the face is more angular and hard, whereas women have more rounded and softer features. However, as a measure of age, young males look more effeminate, in they should have a softer look but still have squared features. In a moment I will have a paint up to provide you an example of what I mean. I hope this has helped you out in any way possible.

Here is a fairly accurate diagram (I did the math for two of the squares and they were only a single pixel apart. Not too shabby for freehand) Also, note that there is an extra line. I forgot that the hairline should be approximately halfway between the brow and the top of the head.

Honestly, no diagrams can help you; you have to learn through practice and observation. The whole measuring out via body parts is all nice and dandy if you want to draw perfectly proportioned figures for anatomy textbooks, but otherwise the only way to develope style and actual talent is through observation.

That said, I'd like to see a full body pic as well. And trust me, tablets don't make that big of a difference; if it's a matter of drawing with a mouse or a tablet, the mouse simply takes longer. (Although I will admit that I cannot be bothered to draw with a mouse myself as "longer" is typically a lot longer.)

Ah here's where you were hiding it.. You said look.. I thought deviant art. Well I dunno what Kidaen looks like.. Might not want to show me cause i'd be tempted to draw him. Looks rather Magic Knights rayearth.

And whoever posted that easter egg with the squiggles.. that's um.. I don't know what the heck that is.. What faces have you been looking at?
I started to read that monster paragraph that came with it but hte word "Should" appeared to many times.

ooers. That's what anime I was trying to remember yesterday. I knew it looked familar. ohmy.gif He looks like the hot green haired dude.. but blonde. bleh I can't remember his name for the life of me though.

I'm horrible at drawing men(though the pic I drew of Scarlatti is built wub.gif ), so I'm sorta putting it off for a bit.. I'd like to draw Joli.. but meh.. I'm feeling lazy today, so I'll just finish this performance I'm writing.

M'thinking for the full body pic to have Him with one hand on His hip and holding something in the other.. for some reason I always think of Him winking or being mildly provactive in some way.. hmm. It -is- Kidaen afterall.

I'm not good with proportion so there are no amount of diagrams that are going to help me..

Kaileigh2005-07-12 19:38:09
Yeah I always found if you rely to much on "diagrams" you never actually learn anything. People don't always look the same and fantasy races don't stick to human proportions. Just that good old fashioned practice.

The point of the diagram is to give beginning artists a system to work off of in order to improve their work. I personally do not use the full system anymore. I typically only draw the midline and eyeline. The rest I've memorized. Also learning through observation is only one part of it, and is only fully effective if you have someone to observe or some way to observe yourself. Art isn't always convenient like that. You also seemed to ignore that I said that the portportions should be adjusted to fit the character. Might I also point out an era in art called the Renaissance, it was when they discovered things look better in porportion and perspective to each other. You can't deny centuries of development. Dunno, I still think that beginning artists need some measure of a system to go by until they can develop their own unique process. I know it took me about two or three years of mapping out features to get as far as I have in my work.

blink.gif I'm a beginning artist...? ohmy.gif I've been drawing anime on and off since I was 10.. Wow.

...should I feel insulted?
Unknown2005-07-13 10:46:23
It looks to me like it was an unintenional insult. He simply pointed out that it looks unproportional, and offered a simple fix. Should I feel insulted when my friend hands my kiddie aspirin for my head-ache? Nah. Sometimes, it's good to be a kid! cool.gif

You're a beginning artist until you have some fancy art degree that says you can call yourself an artist even if you can't draw a straight line. Who needs skill when you have.. A DEGREE.

Well I'll never be an artist because I couldn't stand taking the art classes where they tell you how, what, and when to draw. M'sorry but that drives me nuts. I might be a writer one day and have a nice shiny degree for that, but not drawing/painting/whatever.

I never said I have any sort of degree. In fact the only degree I have is a medical assistant diploma. Thinking of yourself as an artist makes you an artist. In fact, I can't name a single person in art history who had a degree in art. Most of the greats were everything but artists by profession. Schools really only teach you how to cultivate your talents and to put it into a work that is aesthetically pleasing. The simple fact is that you took something I said, which might I add wasn't even originally directed towards you, and completely miscomprehended it.

And no Joli, it wasn't meant to be an insult. In all aspects I still consider myself a beginner. There is no such thing as a veteran artist. Each one of us should strive to learn something new every day. This is typified by the best of artists, who despite how much experience they had, always seemed to progress and create better works until the day they died. There is no such thing as perfection--thus you can never master art, nor anything, because everything is everchanging and the only thing that is consistent is inconsistency.
