Have an area in all cities and communes that is an auction booth. People can go there and;
PUT- UP FOR AUCTION FOR
DAYS
Maximum number can be perhaps for 30 days
People can go there and;
BID GOLD ON <#tem>
WARES
would show you the different items listed for sell, the last bid and how long until the auction closes.
I think this would help a player driven economy when there are those who cannot afford shops to sell their wares.
There could be an auction fee, perhaps 50 gold and also a limit on the number of items you could auction.

Why not make it a %, a sales tax, more or less? Put up auction houses in the cities, and give the revenue to the city's bank account? Maybe make it a manse artifact, relative to the cost of a shop, where people can auction things, and the %age of tax is setable by the city's minister of trade/manse owner.

It should be possible to set the minimum starting bid as well.
I like this idea!
One of things things I liked about Medevia (don't pick on me, played it over 6 years ago...been in IRE since) was their auctioning system.

I'd like to see a max to the minimum bid, and at least one admin watching to make sure people aren't just using it as a storage system, putting items in with decay times of less than a month at prices of upwards 999999 or whatever. Just to keep them for a bit.
I'd like to see a minimum starting bid, but if the bid comes in under it, then the owner has the choice of selling it at said lower price, or not.

Make it a 5 item limit, so as to not take away from those of us that have put forth the money for a store.
I like the idea though.

10 items isn't asking to much you comglomerate whore.

Rhysus2005-07-11 17:41:31
Nah. No real need for this. Market channel and shops fulfill the needs. There aren't enough "unique" things to make auctions very useful, particularly given that often the exact same items can just be reproduced by someone else without having to bid against someone.
Richter2005-07-11 17:45:32
I think Aetolia got this feature after I left.

Don't water down the message. I believe the rallying cry your knee-jerk predecessors used was "Fight the Power!"
Fight on, sister. Fight on.

There is a huge difference. An auction house, you bid and bid and bid until the bidding is done, however many days it takes. A shop, you have a set fee. You pay it out-right, and you're done. No waiting, no competitive stalking of the auction houses. And you get it right then.
This would be intended for those whom owned private cartels and were selling more expensive items, and customized ones. Paintings, clothing, armour, weapons, food. It would also probably traffic things such as mercury, sugars, sulfurs. Things that are needed, but are hard to find.
And, honestly, no offense, but manse shops are the biggest money-sink ever created. Ever.
EDIT: To clarify on that last sentence. They are out of the way, often ignored, rarely trafficked, and considered out of reach by the newer people in cities and communes. City/commune shops are far, far superior.
Maedhros2005-07-11 18:26:10
Like Richter said, it'd have to have a reasonable limit; something around 3-5. If it's anything more, those with shops would have waste their money.

I reiterate that you're quite wrong. Shops would be as they are intended - common, every-day items will be sold through them. Not an auction. Auctions are for very rare purchases - or for unique items. An extremely powerful weapon, or a very rare great robes with very nice protection. Things like that. Not for every health vial and it's mother.
Stangmar2005-07-11 19:19:09
Aye, auctions won't take away from shopowners. Does Ebay destroy Amazon.com or Walmart?
Richter2005-07-11 19:19:33
I just came back to 43,000gp in my manse store. So nyah.
And having no limit would effectively give everyone a store. He's not wrong at all.
Let's say I want to sell a sword at 100, a mace at 200, and armour at 300. I let them sit in my store until someone buys them.
Someone else auctions said items off, setting the minimums at what I set as the sale price. They get the same, or more than I do, and if they don't sell, they put them up again.
Effectively, they have a store, that is more profitable than mine. And theirs is free.

That's a terrible analogy for Lusternia.
1. There are no corporate entities (all stores are privately owned).
2. RL economics are COMPLETELY different (stocks, anyone?).
3. Ebay/walmart to auction house/player stores is like apples to car engines.
4. A whole bunch of other stuff I can't go into detail about because there's this red light telling me we have calls holding. However, someone else can intellegently post why the quoted part makes no sense. Maybe Rhysus can write an essay or something.

I swore someone else said no limit. Even so, 3-5 seems good to me. Someone check Aetolia's auction house?
Stangmar2005-07-11 19:42:53
10 is a good limit. If i recall right, shops have no limit at all. So they still have a large advantage, some people can't afford shops, and even if they could, availability would still be a huge setback. It leaves them with only Market and ADS. A lot of people don't have market turned on, nor do they check ADS. Plus it requires you to be around, whereas if you have a shop, you just throw all your crap in there, price it, and leave the realms and make money.

Shops still have a viewing limit though. If someone comes by and sees I have 10,000 reishi for sale, they don't see anything else. *twiddle*
You're right though, no one checks ads.
About the market channel though, if someone really wanted to buy what you're selling, they'd usually have the channel on.
I'm just looking for an auctionhouse to not overshadow stores (especially the ones that cost 1000cr). Heck, I'd use it if we got one, just that I don't want it to be available as a free store, in the sword, mace, armour example I used earlier.
