A tad Serious?

Back to Common Grounds.

Being a new player to Lusternia, I find several things that seem much too strict?

I have experimented with all four cities / communes and would like to sum up my experience.

I. Celest : After training and thumping in Newton Caverns, I asked a question over NEWBIE channel, no response. I tried GNT, no repsonse, so I went to CT. "don't spout that crap over CT, use the NEWBIE channel !"

II. Serenwilde : *crickets*

III. Magnagora (my favorite) : I first tried to play an Obese Rat Geomancer. "You can NOT be a furrikin, go play Celest if you want to be a Rat".
My second attempt, "Only those who have earned the right to use CT should say anything on this topic (I think I was a whole 2 hours away from graduating Novicehood, so my opinion doesn't mean ^%$# I guess).

IV. Glomdoring : Wow..what a change. I was greeted right away. I think I used an emote once on a channel, the response "PLEASE, read the decorum documentation, and a private tell asking me to please not do things that can not be seen.

The emote topic is another thing I find very odd. These can help explain your attitude. There are no voice fluxuations online, how do you tell if someone is joking or not?

ie. "Your an Arse !"
*wink* "Your an Arse!"
This can mean two entirely different things. If no emote is used, it looks like a flat out insult?

Using abbreviations : I can't even say Glom or Mag? I have to spell the damn thing out every time? What is that ? If I was having a conversation with a friend, I would use the abbreviations? I an not a RoXoR DOOD, I am just an average joe.
I never speak in ebonics. It just seems a tad strict?

I guess the main thing that bothered me was the attitude by the so called "leaders" of the cities / communes, we ARE newbies for a reason. Don't get me wrong, there are a TON of helpful people in this community, I just find that attitudes are a bit rough at times.

There are reasons why some games die very quickly, and the people are what make a difference.

Tossing my two cents out there.
FLAME AWAY, the Vernal Gods know we can't do that over any Chat channel in game !

Syrienne2005-07-12 18:22:30
Glomdoring is meant to be harsh, as is Magnagora to a degree also. While I'm not entirely sure how the other two work, Glomdoring and Magnagora have some rules they enforce quickly and in Mag especially you're basically considered an insect until you show otherwise. This is just the RP of the environment and something you have to accept.. while some people are willing to help you and answer questions theres some rules that just are. Emotes over the city aetherwave is one thing long considered OOC and not all that possible to convey an emotion over a channel. Its a rule that dates back to early Achaea too.
Veonira2005-07-12 18:23:49
Here's the thing. Most everyone who plays the game simply learns to go along with the "strict" rules we have in place. This isn't a chat MUD, this is a place for people to roleplay. CT and GT are aetherwaves, therefore you can't -see- a person through them, you only hear them. Unless you have metal eyelashes, I don't think any character can hear you winking on any channel. We are all simply trying to play our roles and keep up the roleplay and stay in character.

That's really all I have to say.

Regarding the issue of emotes over channels:

First, the word is "you're." Newbieness does not excuse you from proper grammar. Failing to use proper English will (either fairly or unfairly) often be the primary factor people use to determine the intelligence of the players, especially since this is a text-based world.

Next, creativity and context go a long way.

(Glomdoring): Telira says, "Shut up and ask that over GNT!"

(Glomdoring): You say, "You're an arse!"

Or, if you need to be more direct:

(Glomdoring): You say, "You're an arse! It's just a question!"

or

(Glomdoring): You say, "Dirty wench. You're an arse!"

And, instead of a non-verbal wink:

(Glomdoring): Telira says, "Oooh, wanna go out later, hot stuff? I think we need to get you out of that smelly suit of armour."

(Glomdoring): You say, "Heh, you're an arse."

See?

I believe this was simply a poor attempt to veil Xavius' desire to say "arse" multiple times in a post.
Ialie2005-07-12 18:32:16
Emotes are bad over the channel because the channel isn't formated for them.

(Serenwilde): You say, "Hello."

See that "say" there? It is an indication that the following text is something that is going to be spoken. These are aetherwaves a bit like a radiostation. You just don't hear actions because you aren't going to "say" them.

Xavius ..your attitude is a prime example of what I am talking about?

Sorry, I am not an English major. Maybe English isn't even my primary language?

If "leaders" like yourself cop an attitude about small &^%$, how do you expect to keep players online?
Gol2005-07-12 18:59:54
People seem to be online fine right now, you know. You've no right to criticise when people ask for decent, respectful grammar on public channels.

Abbreviating the name of a location tends to show disrespect to it, in a fashion, and doesn't look professional. And I highly doubt you'd stand infront of a whole city and use an abbreviation, so realise CT and GT do go to large organisations, not just you and your friends.

And again, you've no right to expect your opinion or wants to mean a damn thing right off the bat ICly. You have to actually work for respect. Just like everyone you see on HELP MAGNAGORA, HELP CELEST, etc. Furthermore, there's really no reason to complain about not being a furrikin geomancer. It may seem clever to you, but first, it doesn't fit RP to have a furrikin in Magnagora - It just doesn't really happen, secondly Viscanti look down on other races from an IC perspective - Ones like furrikin are the most disliked.
Diamante2005-07-12 19:10:29
yeah, shorthand for other cities is usually a no no, i mean, if your talking about glomdoritos, who knows if you mean someone like ethelon or are just hungry...
mmmmmm.......glomdoritos..... ninja.gif

How long does it take to type the extra "doring" or "nagora" on the end of "glom" or "Mag"? Really?

I'd say 1/3 to 1/2 of a second.

I thought it was elves and faelings, but... what about in Glomdoring? I think... Magnagora could love anyone if they put their minds to it, but seriously if they can ease back on their hatred for the elves and faelings in Glom, they should be able to like a tainted furrikin.
Unknown2005-07-12 19:18:03
I don't think anything is being 'coped' as you put it, generally as new people filter into the Mud they come here with differant perseptions of it and they need to be told not to say OOC or unrealistic things. There are helpfiles about these things. Also the aetherwaves have historical significance as they are a part of this RP world, and if we don't pay attention to the 'little' things as you put it, the world starts to fall apart, and I for one enjoy Role Playing in Lusternia.
Kaileigh2005-07-12 19:25:03
If the Older players let the new players act anyway they want as a novice they will believe it is ok to act like that and grow into olde rplayers still believe that thus letting the next generation believe.. and so on.. and so on..

Until Lusternia becomes Achaea where they have heart boxers and and talk about Xboxes on the guild channels.

In Celest's defense. I don't know what you asked, nor what guild you were in. Nor the time you were around. There are many factors that lead to certain responses. Asking how to get the Newton Catapult to work is entirely different from asking how to learn from Meleris for example.

It is merians and elves - but there are not a lot of elfen in Glomdoring, more are in Serenwilde.
Ialie2005-07-12 19:30:03
Yeah but Rowena is elfen, and faelings are part elfen. It was an elfen community.
Cwin2005-07-12 19:36:20
In Seren's defense, the CT can be silent but the folks are definatly friendly, and a large number of them chatting it up at the mother moonhart tree: in fact, I think you can reach more people using Says at Mother than using CTs anywhere else.

As for actions in channel, think of channels as similar to phone calls. You can't see the other person wink, but you can hear them laugh, or speak in a whiny tone (thus you can CT, '*laugh* that's silly' or '*whining* Oww! That hurt', but not *wink* or *smile*) If you still end up not being understood then remember that it's easy to misunderstand people on the phone as well. The rules usualy allow 'emotes' that are heard.

So to use the example. Just do "*giggle* You're an arse".

Of course, there's always, as I hinted before, finding people and talking to them face to face. Lusternia seems to MUCH prefer to be casual in person and leave group Channels to official buisness.
Daganev2005-07-12 20:02:37
GothMirr, I flaunt my inablity to type properly and my terrible grammer. I enjoy mocking people who care more about grammor than content.

Seriousness is an issue, but its hard to get around except in tells, because people have images they want to keep up.

BTW, nice idea of the rat geomancer... You can be a rat geomancer as a Viscanti though, since Viscanti are any race.
Ialie2005-07-12 20:04:15
So Viscanti are a type of advanced evil furrikin?
