Just to play the game of who's flagpole is taller...
I'm not sure what war situations England has been in to uphold those conventions, but I'm just going to put a shout out to Israel on probabbly doing the most self destructive things because they wanted to hold to certain moral standards.

Nobody follows all conventions to the letter, but England follows the important ones (the Geneva included) better than most. I think what's most important is that the spirit of it is followed, and I think we do.

I won't argue that, I'm just not silly enough to believe Englad is follows them to the letter, as Ceres thinks we should believe. .

Such as what, out of interest? I've learnt of some breaches to the Convention while doing my HSC.

I COULD supply reliable evidence to most people's satisfaction, such as documents and doctrines regarding the use of certain types of artillery rounds in situations, but I have a feeling that would be borderline treason and i'm not prepared to risk that to prove something to some silly girl in england who is being stubborn.
White phosporous (do you even know what this is Ceres? google it) is used in artillery rounds for purposes other than specified.
Oh and guess what? Rusty barbed wire is against the geneva convenion (you might get tetanus from it?!??).....so you mean to tell me that all of england's barbed wire they used in iraq/elsewhere isn't at ALL rusty?
That alone is enough logic reasoning for me, Lisaera said it though, its the spirit of the convention which needs to be followed.

Wait, is white phosphorous totally illegal or just when involved in military? 'Cause if totally illegal, my chemistry teacher is a baaaaad bad man (if it is the stuff I am thinking of anyway).
Murphy2005-07-18 12:44:50
No, its not illegal.
It's used to make a lot of white smoke due to its burning properties...and therefore is legal to use as marking targets.
It's illegal to use for the purpose of killing troops, because its bad ass stuff, once it gets on you it doesn't stop burning, you basically have to cut it out real quick
An abuse of this is "marking" a target with white phos.....where the target could be a dug in infantry platoon.
They tend to "mark the target really well with 30 rounds of white phos" and follow up with a single HE (high explosive) round, which is legal for use on troops (love that schnapnel!!)
just one method, but we also have access to splintex rounds, which are basically artillery rounds full of thousands of tiny little steel flechettes (darts), which basically nail people to trees.
i've seen splintex used on a range, in an accident where a herd of kangaroos jumped across the range, and the call to cease firing came a second after we'd all let off our rounds..........there were 'roos nailed to trees, great stuff.

Murphy, I wouldn't have minded seein' that.

Yea Murphy let them belive what they want it's not worth getting Court Marshaled over.
Lisaera2005-07-18 16:50:28
Hmm... when was white phosphorous banned? They were still using that in Vietnam.
Murphy2005-07-18 22:32:34
Its not banned Lisaera my dear, its just illegal to use them for the purpose of hurting troops on the ground.....but like i said you can use it to mark targets (even if targets = infantry companies)
Don't get me wrong, I love white phos, it starts fires on the firing range, and then myself along with 20 other diggers have to go and put them out, IN THE TARGET RANGE where there are UNEXPLODED BOMBS AND SHELLS THAT ARE BENT IN HALF that we are stepping over.

My chem teacher set the desk in our class on fire with it. It catches alight in just normal atmosphere...so cool.
Lisaera2005-07-19 22:09:07
Oh yeah, marking is fine, let's just mark some guy's face with something that burns through flesh and keeps burning...

Starting back in 1948... things that come to the top of my head in no particular order....
1. Giving away land for peace. (a concept invented in Israel as far as I know)
2. Picking up injured enemies just to have them blow themselves up once you heal them.
3. Going into life fire to gather the bodies of both your allies and enemies, just so you can make sure they don't get mutilated by the other army.
4. Importing sick people from the surrounding countries that have declared war on you so that you can heal them in the best hospital in the region. (That hospital is currently nominated for the nobel peace prize.. its government owned and opperated)
5. Sending millions of dollars that could be used for fighting an ongoing war to Africa to help feed people, all while the country is suffering from a depression.
6. Giving advanced warning 48 hours before,of the exact day and time a military strike is going to accur so that civilians have time to get out of the area. (been doing that since 1967)

my point excatly.
Lets mark an infanty company with 30 rounds, rapid fire of white phos (artillery white phos is SO much nastier than a grenade of it)
Hang on, follow up with one high explosive round.....and we're clear
*cue starwipe to burning soliers screaming out in unholy agony*
